Combined Pitching and Yawing Motion of Airplanes (open access)

Combined Pitching and Yawing Motion of Airplanes

This report treats the following problems: The beginning of the investigated motions is always a setting of the lateral controls, i.e., the rudder or the ailerons. Now, the first interesting question is how the motion would proceed if these settings were kept unchanged for some time; and particularly, what upward motion would set in, how soon, and for how long, since therein lie the dangers of yawing. Two different motions ensue with a high rate of turn and a steep down slope of flight path in both but a marked difference in angle of attack and consequently different character in the resultant aerodynamic forces: one, the "corkscrew" dive at normal angle, and the other, the "spin" at high angle.

Determination of Resistance and Trimming Moment of Planing Water Craft (open access)

Determination of Resistance and Trimming Moment of Planing Water Craft

This report presents a new theory which makes it possible to interpret the resistance and the trimming moment for any loading of a planing aircraft when these values are given for one load. This application of the new theory forms the basis of the present paper. Derivations of various conversion formulas are given as well as numerous examples.

Determination of Stresses and Deformations of Aircraft Propellers (open access)

Determination of Stresses and Deformations of Aircraft Propellers

A method is described for testing the strength of propellers of any shape. It is shown that the shape of the propeller greatly affects the stresses, and that great caution must be exercised if the relieving effect of the centrifugal force, which exists in every propeller with a straight blade axis, is to be increased by curving the blade axis. In a numerical example, the calculation is made for a certain revolution speed at which the actual distortion is then measured. The results of the calculation agree satisfactorily with the experimental results.

Torsional Vibration of Aircraft Engines (open access)

Torsional Vibration of Aircraft Engines

"Exhaustive torsional-vibration investigations are required to determine the reliability of aircraft engines. A general outline of the methods used for such investigations and of the theoretical and mechanical means now available for this purpose is given, illustrated by example. True vibration diagrams are usually obtained from vibration measurements on the completed engine. Two devices for this purpose and supplementing each other, the D.V.L. torsiograph and the D.V.L. torsion recorder, are described in this report" (p. 1).

Twelfth Rhon Soaring Contest, 1931

The crew of the "Fafnir" was given an excellent opportunity for collecting first-hand data as to the usefulness of gliders in the Alps. It is necessary to recount the remarkable glider achievements ahead of the Rhon Soaring Contest, in order to understand the tension and expectation with which the Rhon contest was anticipated. A description of some of the aircraft present at the event is provided.

Flight-Test Data on the Static Fore-and-Aft Stability of Various German Airplanes

"The static longitudinal stability of an airplane with locked elevator is usually determined by analysis and model tests. The present report proposes to supply the results of such measurements. The method consisted of recording the dynamic pressure versus elevator displacement at different center-of-gravity positions in unaccelerated flight" (p. 1).

Torsional Stresses in Box Beams With Cross Sections Partially Restrained Against Warping (open access)

Torsional Stresses in Box Beams With Cross Sections Partially Restrained Against Warping

"The present report gives a method for computing the torsion of boxes with thin shear-resistant or simply tension-resistant walls under any torsional load, support and dimension. The final stress condition is developed from that of a principal system with unconstrained sectional warping corresponding to Bredt's formula and an additional stress condition due to constrained cross-sectional warping. This is computed by means of the deflection condition of the principal system from a statically indeterminate calculation" (p. 1).

Hydrodynamic Tests of Models of Seaplane Floats (open access)

Hydrodynamic Tests of Models of Seaplane Floats

"This report contains the results of tank tests carried out at free trim on seventeen hulls and floats of various types. The data as to the weight on water, trim, and relative resistance for each model are plotted nondimensionally and are referenced both to the total weight and to the weight on water. Despite the fact that the experiments were not made systematically, a study of the models and of the test data permits nevertheless some general deductions regarding the forms of floats and their resistance" (p. 1).

Chief Characteristics and Advantages of Tailless Airplanes

This study will be concerned with the critical examination of two main questions, mainly, susceptibility of centering and more generally, the conditions of static stability, longitudinal equilibrium, and the question of dynamic stability, or at least the damping of longitudinal vibrations about a position of equilibrium that may result from a small variation in the angle of attack.

Similitude in Hydrodynamic Tests Involving Planing (open access)

Similitude in Hydrodynamic Tests Involving Planing

The problems of using models in planing tests are addressed. If one passes from the model to a hull of linear dimensions n times greater, the speeds are connected by the law of mechanical similitude. The normal forces given by the hydrodynamic equations (perfect fluid) also follow the law of dynamic similitude (Reech's method) and are multiplied by n(exp 3). A series of tests were performed and the actual results were compared to theoretical results.

Helicopter Problems

The present report deals with a number of the main problems requiring solution in the development of helicopters and concerning the lift, flying performance, stability, and drive. A complete solution is given for the stability of the helicopter with rigid blades and control surfaces. With a view to making a direct-lift propeller sufficient without the addition of auxiliary propellers, the "flapping drive" is assessed and its efficiency calculated.

The Scale Effect in Towing Tests With Airplane-Float Systems (open access)

The Scale Effect in Towing Tests With Airplane-Float Systems

"The present report includes a description of the making of three-component measurements on a full-size float mounted on an actual airplane and the comparison of the results with those from two models of the same form but of different size which had been tested in the towing tank. The purpose of the comparison is to determine the effect of the Reynolds Number on the results of model tank tests. Following a brief discussion of previous tests intended to elucidate the problem of scale effect on float systems and a description of the testing equipment, the choice of the reference quantities to be used in the comparison is discussed" (p. 1).

The Source of Propeller Noise (open access)

The Source of Propeller Noise

A two blade propeller of 40 cm diameter and zero pitch was explored for its noise development; it could be whirled up to 17,000 rpm - i.e., a tip speed of 355 meters/second. To obtain the power loss N(sub m) of the propeller for comparison with the produced acoustical power N(sub A) the engine performance characteristics were measured with and without propeller. The result is the sought-for relation c, that is, curve c' after correction with the engine efficiency.

Load Tests on a Stiffened Circular Cylindrical Shell

The present report describes tests in which the stress distribution may be determined in a stiffened circular cylindrical shell loaded longitudinally at four symmetrically situated points. As being of particular importance are the cases investigated of groups of bending and arching or convexing forces, respectively. From the stress measurements on the longitudinal stiffeners, the shear stresses and the bulkhead ring stresses in the skin could be evaluated.

The Drag of Airplane Radiators With Special Reference to Air Heating (Comparison of Theory and Experiment) (open access)

The Drag of Airplane Radiators With Special Reference to Air Heating (Comparison of Theory and Experiment)

This report contains a survey of past radiator research. This report also is intended as a systematic comparison of theoretical and experimental radiator drag, with the object of ascertaining the most important loss sources and their interaction in different cases of installation, and to separate the radiator systems which are amenable to calculation, both as regards axial flow and drag. The sources of loss due to the diffuser are to be looked into closely as in many cases they can be of preeminent magnitude and their customary appraisal, according to Fliegner's formula, does not meet actual conditions.
