Uranium in Coal (open access)

Uranium in Coal

Introduction: Anticipated uranium requirements of nuclear power plants have prompted many organizations to examine the possibility of recovering uranium from low-grade sources such as shale, phosphate, sea water, and coal. Coal has generated special interest because some uranium was recovered from uranium-bearing carbonaceous rock in the mid-1960s. About 5,000 samples of coal have been analyzed for uranium by the U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Bureau of Mines, U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration, and numerous state and private agencies.

Geology and Uranium Evaluation of the Precambrian Quartz-Pebble Conglomerates of the Needle Mountains, Southwest Colorado: Final Report (open access)

Geology and Uranium Evaluation of the Precambrian Quartz-Pebble Conglomerates of the Needle Mountains, Southwest Colorado: Final Report

From purpose of study: The Vallecito Conglomerate of the Needle Mountains area in southwestern Colorado was studied to evaluate the uranium potential of the unit and to test the applicability of the uraniferous Precambrian pebble-conglomerate exploration model in this area. The main thrust of this project is the Vallecito Conglomerate, but the Uncompahgre Formation, which is also in the Needle Mountains area has basal conglomerate that was investigated in a reconnaissance mode. Five specific objectives have been formulated to meet the overall purpose of this project, and these include: a) Determine the uranium distribution in the Vallecito Conglomerate and the basal conglomerate of the Uncompahgre Formation. b) Evaluate the uranium resources of the area to the degree possible utilizing available information and personal field investigations. c) Test the validity of application of the Precambrian quartz-pebble conglomerate model to this area. d) Recommend detailed studies and delineate drilling sites in the area to further evaluate the uranium resources if warranted. e) Recommend additional geologic, geophysical and geochemical studies which would bear directly on evaluation of uranium resources of the Precambrian pebble conglomerates in the Needle Mountains area.

Uranium Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance in Lincoln and Flathead Counties, Northwest Montana (open access)

Uranium Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance in Lincoln and Flathead Counties, Northwest Montana

From abstract: Between mid-May and late June 1976, 3409 water and water-transported sediment samples were collected from 1781 locations spread over an approximate 17 000 kilometer area of northwestern Montana. All of the samples were analyzed for total uranium at the LASL, using standardized procedures and rigorous quality controls--the waters by fluorometry and the sediment (and those waters with >10 parts per billion uranium) by delayed-neutron counting methods.

Baker 1° x 2° NTMS Area, Oregon and Idaho: Data Report (Abbreviated)

From introduction: The data presented here are reconnaissance data intended for use in identifying broad areas for further study. While care has been taken to provide reliable sampling and analyses, verification of individual analyses is beyond the scope of this report. The data should be viewed statistically because "one-point anomalies" may be misleading. Regional trends, however, should be reliable. This report is one of a series presenting data obtained by SRL reconnaissance.
