Aluminium Corrosion in High Purity Water (open access)

Aluminium Corrosion in High Purity Water

Summary: "A corrosion test of aluminum components in a 4-ft. section of a fuel tube has been tested under conditions simulating plant geometry and, as nearly as possible, the operating conditions of water purity, temperature, and flow rate. Results: 1. None of the aluminum components, 63S fuel tube, 2S solid fillers and 43S spacers showed any corrosion effects beyond normal oxide film formation. This was carried out in flowing water, maintained at a specific resistivity greater than 1 x 10(6) ohm-cm, for four weeks. 2. No corrosion pitting was observed on any of the aluminum surfaces; all became covered with a uniform film of Al2O3.H2O. On the boat tails, where type 304 stainless steel fins were in galvanic contact with 2S aluminum, no pitting or preferential attack occurred."

Boundary Disturbances in High Explosive Shock Tubes (open access)

Boundary Disturbances in High Explosive Shock Tubes

From abstract: High velocity disturbances are observed to propagate along the walls of a high explosive operated shock tube in advance of the plane shock. Experiments are presented which determine the dependence of the geometry, energy, and velocity of the disturbance on such variables as the gas contained in the shock tube, the shock strength, and the roughness and composition of the supporting boundary. A model is constructed to explain the flow within the disturbance. Arguments are presented which show the disturbance to result from radiation originating in the luminous plane shock...The purpose of this paper is to present the results of initial investigations made in an effort to describe the phenomenon of strong shocks developed in a shock tube by the detonation of high explosive charge.

Geology of Lukachukai Mountains Area, Apache County, Arizona

From introduction: The purpose of this paper is to present the geologic facts which have been discovered thus far about the Lukachukai area and to draw conclusions about uranium mineralization. Basic data of general nature are included to facilitate the work of future geologists in this area who may find the information applicable to new ideas.

Investigational Drilling, Hoskinnini Mesa (open access)

Investigational Drilling, Hoskinnini Mesa

From to the files: To date, all the mineralization seen in the Monument Valley area in the Shinarump formation has been in scour channels. The mineralized rock occurs at or near the bottom of the channel. On Hoskinnini Mesa, all the channels examined to date contain some mineralized material. Channels observed may in some cases contain copper without apparent uranium mineralization; others definitely exhibit copper-uranium mineralization.

MTA Target Equations (open access)

MTA Target Equations

In solving the two-group, two medium equations for neutron diffusion in a finite one-dimensional multiplying system, the equations in each medium can be solved, and the boundary conditions used to determine the coefficients. This direct attack involves eight simultaneous linear equations. The opportunities for error are numerous, and, frequently, a great deal of accuracy is lost by subtractions; hence, it is felt that an alternative method of solution, in which numerical errors would be less likely to occur, would be desirable.

Preliminary Appraisal of the Carnotite Resources of the Carrizo Mountains Area, San Juan County, New Mexico, and Apache County, Arizona (open access)

Preliminary Appraisal of the Carnotite Resources of the Carrizo Mountains Area, San Juan County, New Mexico, and Apache County, Arizona

From introduction: A rapid appraisal of the carnotite resources of the Salt Wash sandstone member of the Morrison formation in the Carrizo Mountains area was undertaken by the U. S. Geological Survey late in 1951 in connection with its current project of geologic mapping of the area. Though brief and preliminary, this report provides a summary of production trends and estimated reserves in the area and indicates as far as possible the total potential of the area as a source of uranium. This information may be helpful in planning new milling facilities or other measures to encourage a higher rate of production.

Radiations of 6.7d U²³⁷ (open access)

Radiations of 6.7d U²³⁷

Abstract: The radiations of U²³⁷ have been studied using a magnetic lens beta ray spectrometer and scintillation spectrometers for betas and gammas singly and in coincidence. A beta with an end point energy of 245 keV was found along with evidence for the existence of lower energy components. Gammas of energy 27, 42, 49, 59, 166, 208, 269, 354, 431, and 467 keV were found, and probably a gamma of 102 keV. The decay scheme constructed gives a total decay energy for this isotope of 512 keV.

Relative Cross Sections for Photo Fission and Photo Neutron Emission (open access)

Relative Cross Sections for Photo Fission and Photo Neutron Emission

Abstract: The yields of U²³⁷ and a fission product were measured as a function of maximum betatron energy, The ratio of the number of fissions divided by the number of U²³⁷ atoms increases with increasing maximum betatron energy. This is consistent with the picture that the higher-energy gammas leave the U²³⁷ atoms with enough excitation energy (above photofission and photoneutron thresholds) to also decay by fission or neutron emission. This secondary process increases the number of fissions and decreases the U²³⁷ yield, this increasing the above ratio.
