The Polarographic Determination of Uranium in the Presence of Plutonium

Strubl's polarographic method for the determination of uranium in the presence of iron can be used for the determination of uranium in plutonium solutions. A hydroxylamine hydrochloride solution (2M) is used as the supporting electrolyte. This reduces the plutonium to the plus three oxidation state without reducing the uranium. The uranium may then be determined polarographically by measuring the height of the uranyl reduction wave (UVI to UV) at -0.35 volts (vs. S.C.E.) applied potential. Solutions with a U/Pu weight ratio as low as 3.5 x 10(-3) were analyzed with an error of less than 2%. This error increased to 6% for solutions of 1 x 10(-3) U/Pu ration and is considerably larger for smaller U/Pu ratios.

A spectrometer has been used with a hollow prism electrically heated to 70 C to measure the refractive indices of solutions of uranium hexafluoride in bromine trifluoride and uranium hexafluoride in bromine pentafluoride. The refractive indices of the two binary systems have been expressed as a function of composition.

A Study of Location Times for Positions Arranged on a Panel in a Random and an Ordered Manner

The results of an experimental pilot study on the location time, for a sequence of N specified positions on a panel, are given for 1 <_ N <_ 30. The positions to be located were randomly arranged on one set of panels and arranged according to an ordering scheme on a second set of panels. Th location time for N positions randomly arranged on a panel varies approximately as N(2). In the case of an order arrangement the location time is essentially proportional to N. Even for as few as 30 positions, the location time for an random arrangement was twelve times greater than for an order panel. For 60 positions the ratio would be 19, and for 90 positions the ratio would be 26.

A Combined Distillation-Electrochemical Method for Recovery of Hydrofluoric Acid

Electrodialysis in an ion-exchange membrane cell was shown to be technically feasible for the concentration of an azeotropic mixture of HF and water. A flowsheet is presented for recovery of anhydrous HF by distillation and electrodialysis of the azeotropic residue. In the electrodialysis step, 2.6 kwhr of energy per pound of anhydrous product was consumed, with electricity at 1¢ per kilowatt-hour, the total operating cost of the electrodialysis equipment alone, including amortization, would be 6¢ per pound of HF.

Thermal Expansion of Pile Graphites

Average coefficients of thermal expansion of the temperature range 25 C to approximately 425 C are reported for numerous types of graphite. The dependence of thermal expansion on crystal orientation and crystallite size and the effects of oxidation and cold test hole irradiation are discussed. An empirical relationship between thermal expansion and the initial rate of physical expansion under cold test hole irradiation is formulated.

It seemed desirable to examine the problem to determine if any corrective measure could be taken, since it was apparent that production losses were imminent.

Brief Review of Heat Transfer Problems Encountered in the Production of Magnetic Fields

The design of internally cooled electrical coils for the production of high frequency intensity magnetic fields presents many new aspects and combinations of the familiar modes of heat transfer. However, the customary methodology appears to be sufficient for preliminary analysis and understanding of those problems. This methodology comprises the derivation of a qualitative, approximate equation expressing the relative performance of the various parts of a system, followed by an examination of this equation in order to locate the limiting features of the system. These features are then investigated by more powerful methods, which in turn provide guidance for development research in the laboratory.

Design Criteria for a Pile Oscillator

In the use of a reactor as a device to measure neutron cross sections, the pile oscillator is often employed because of its much higher sensitivity compared to that available in static reactivity measurements. The factor limiting the available in static reactivity measurements. The factor limiting the available sensitivity is the generation of random noise, which originates in the statistical nature of the chain reaction. In other words, the nuclear reactions which maintain the chain reaction do not proceed uniformly, but rather at rates which fluctuate in time around some average values. These fluctuations limit the accuracy of measurements in the reactor.

Radial Thermal Flux Traverses in Natural Uranium - Graphite Lattices

The spatial distribution of thermal neutrons in a reactor lattices cell is of fundamental importance for many reasons. First of all, this information allows the determination of the relative absorption rates in each component of the cell which in turn enables a determination of the thermal utilization, and the diffusion length of the lattice. In addition, the observed spatial distributions of thermal neutrons in the lattice cell is of major interest in testing various approximations to the solution of the transport equation such as the P1 and P3 solutions.

A Needle in a Haystack

Abstract: "Production of [rho]'s and [omega]'s in [pi]- + p and p + [letter p with a bar over it] interactions is discussed. The [rho] is presumably a J = 1-, 1 = 1 state and thus can decay into 2[pi]'s via a strong coupling. The [omega] is probably J = 1-, 1 = 0 which can also decay into 2[pi]'s via electromagnetic coupling. A theoretical description of this situation is presented in terms of coupled time-dependent Schroedinger equations which mix [rho] and [omega] states that are assumed to be isotopically pure at the time of production. The interference between the two resonances was found to have the effect of extending the 2[pi] spectrum toward the [omega] mass."
