Extended operation of turbojet engine with pentaborane

A full-scale turbojet engine was operated with pentaborane fuel continuously for 22 minutes at conditions simulating flight at a Mach number of 0.8 at an altitude of 50,000 feet. This period of operation is approximately three times longer than previously reported operation times. Although the specific fuel consumption was reduced from 1.3 with JP-4 fuel to 0.98 with pentaborane, a 13.2-percent reduction in net thrust was also encountered. A portion of this thrust loss is potentially recoverable with proper design of the engine components. The boron oxide deposition and erosion processes within the engine approached an equilibrium condition after approximately 22 minutes of operation with pentaborane.

The modification minimizes the interaction between the antenna and interceptor motions, which can have a serious influence on flight path stability during a lead-collision attack.

During the development of in-reactor corrosion experiments three types of bomb designs have been developed for following quantitatively the consumption of oxygen in a bomb which is fabricated from the particular metal under test. The bombs are designed so as to be rocked continuously during their in-reactor exposure, consequently agitating the uranium salt solution contained in the bomb and permitting gentle movement of the solution past metal specimens and other corroding surfaces. The oxygen pressure is produced within the bomb at the beginning of the run either by the withdrawal of gas from an oxygen tank or by the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide added just prior to closure. Temperature measurements are obtained by mans of thermocouples placed in a well within the bomb body or, in the latest design, there will also be thermocouples staked at several points on the outer wall of the bomb. The assembly is inserted in an experimental access hole in the reactor, brought up to a predetermined operating temperature by means of an electric furnace in close contact with the bomb, and allowed to remain for the desired amount of exposure to reactor radiation. The operation of the HRT mockup was on 0.042m UO2SO4, 0.024m H2SO4, and 0.005m CuSO4 at 280 C and 1400 psi pressure. with the O2 content at near 500 ppm. The pump showed bearing wear and high corrosion. The letdown heat exchanger was removed from the mockup and sectioned. The metallographic examination revealed corrosion. Results of corrosion runs on Ti, zircaloy-2, and stainless steel are given.

Electrical Simulation of Diaphragm Feed Pump System

The electical analog study of the diaphragm feed pump system resulted in changes to the system which have improved the over-all operation and reliability of the pumps. Specifically, the study showed that if the release of the high- pressure oil from the pulsator through the valve on the Scott and Williams pump could be made to take place over a longer period of time, pressure oscillations could be substantially reduced. Also, pressure surges could be reduced by placing an accumulator in the pump discharge line near the check valve. Both of these have been incorporated into sulted in a quieter and smoother operation of the pumping system. (auth)

From the standpoint of erosion, a long dump line may be preferable to a throttling dump valve to achieve the pressure drop from the HRE-3 slurry blanket to the dump tank. Extended length HRE-3 dump lines in which the maximum average velocity is 20 fps, the smallest allowable line size is 1/2 in., and the time for dumping is 10 minutes are investigated. Twenty-six parallel 1/2-in. Sch. 80 pipes, each 725 ft long, or four parallel 1 1/2-in. Sch. 80 pipes each 2,000 ft long are required. To avoid localized velocities considerably higher than 20 fps as a result ef flashing, these pipes can be submerged in a 25,000 gal pool of water initially at 135 deg F and with 40 deg F allowable temperature rise. It can be concluded that if the velocity, line size, and dumping time are limited to the values listed above, use of restrictor piping to achieve the pressure drop is not very practical. If higher velocities and flashing are allowed, a cursory study indicates that for an average velocity in the range from 100 to 200 fps, one 1 1/4-in. (or smaller) line of less than 250-ft length could be used. Flashing would occur, …

The Effect of Solution and Vessel Thermal Expansion on Volume Measurements in the Chemical Processing Department

The major portion of transfers and inventory in the Chemical Processing Department are dependent on volume measurement. Good volume measurements are therefore essential to good SS material control. Considerable attention has been given to the volume problem especially on primary transfer points. Document HW-57888 discusses the biasing effect pf temperature on manometer oil. HW- 57866 given the procedure for vessel calibration. Other undocumented correspondence has discussed recent calibrations and certain aspects of temperature considerations in the volume determinations. However, there is a need to document for future reference the consideration given temperature and provide at the same time information which covers the temperature angle on all volume methods used in the Chemical Processing Department.

The fire involved approximately 30 liters of isopropyl alcohol as a result of the ignition of about 16-18 liters of isopropyl alcohol and a slurry of thoria and ammonium nitrate in a 20-liter glass carboy. This material was undergoing a volume reduction by boiling in a floor-type metal hood with Plexiglas sides and 3 sliding door on the front of ordinary glass. The alcohol vapor was vents directly into the hood (Fig1.)

The basic theory of operation of the triggered spark gap is established, and qualitative and quantitative engineering design data are given. From the basic twoelectrode gap, a three-electrode or triggered gap model is established with its static and dynamic triggering characteristics shown. Several geometry conditions such as gap spacings trigger electrode hole sizes and insulator effects are discussed, showing their influence upon the triggering mechanism. A suggested trigger mechanism is given based on that proposed by Sletten and Lewis for the trigatron and modified to fit the present analysis. (auth)

A Calculation of the Beta Energy Absorbed by Tritiated Gases in Spherical Vessels

A calculation of tritium beta energy absorption in spherical bulbs filled with mixtures of tritium and other gases is ' carried out under the empirically substantiated assumption that the energy absorption per spherical shell surrounding a point tritium source is representable by a pure exponential function. Primary and successive backscattering at the wall of the vessel is taken into account by means of a very approximate calculation. The computed energy absorption function for hydrogen gas in a silvered bulb agrees within plus or minus 3% over a wide range of gas pressure with the one available set of spherical ionization chamber data. Pu nitrate production was above revised forecast. 141 kCi Sr-90 was isolated in Purex and stored for decay; to date, 1190 kCi has been recovered from Purex wastes. Casks of Cs-137 and Sr-90 were turned over to AEC for ORNL. Production of UO{sub 3}, Pu metal buttons, and weapon component fabrication exceeded forecasts. Purex processing continued until April 14. The Purex neptunium campaign had low yield because of loss to waste system. The cartridge in the Purex co-decontamination column scrub section was replaced with a new design. After the Redox organic distillation pot was replaced, {gamma} activity in Redox recovered hexone increased 300 {times}; product quality returned to normal after the faulty steam traps were replaced. Fabricated parts underwent dimensional changes after machining and gaging; part dimensions have been altered to compensate. Design for the proposed caisson-lateral leak detection system was revised to contain 3 horizontal laterals beneath each tank and 7 vertical wells around each tank. A ratio exists between the Cs-137 in the coating waste solution and the total U in liquid and precipitate phases. (DLC)
