Report presenting an experimental investigation to determine the effect of several wedge-type boundary-layer diverters on drag and inlet pressure recovery in the 8- by 6-foot supersonic wind tunnel at Mach numbers of 1.5, 1.8, and 2.0. The model consisted of two rectangular ramp-type inlets mounted on the NACA RM-10 body of revolution. Results regarding variation of inlet pressure recovery and configuration drag with inlet mass-flow ratio, changes in the shock pattern off the inlet ramp, pressure-recovery-mass-flow characteristics, and drag coefficients are provided.

Slug and tube factors

A common and useful assumption is that the front-to-rear power distribution is a shortened cosine curve. This fact led to the calculation of slug factors'' for the longer charges to be used at K-Pile. It is hoped that the publication of these numbers will save time and prevent duplication of effort by those concerned in any way with slug power, surface temperatures, reactivity effects, etc. For the sake of completeness, slug factors for the older piles are included. Another useful ideal is that tube power distributions can be approximated by the assumption of a cylindrical pile and a cosine distribution of power outside of a central flattened region. This led to another double set of numbers since the values for the 2004 tube piles were again included for completeness. 2 figs., 6 tabs.

Report presenting an exploratory investigation of three aluminum disoaps of C(sub 8) acids to determine the gelling properties and stabilizing ability in slurries of 50 percent magnesium power and JP-4 fuel. All of the soaps were found to gel the slurries satisfactorily and to exhibit adequate reproducibility of gel properties. Results regarding the soap behaviors, effects of temperature, viscosity, and formation of the gel structures are provided.

The Extraction and Recovery of Uranium (and Vanadium) from Acidic Liquors with DI (2-Ethylhexyl) Phosphoric Acid and Some Other Organophosphorus Acids

Bench scale studies have been made of the recovery of uranium from acid leach liquors (and slurries) by solvent extracting with di (2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid in an organic diluent. Uranium may be stripped from the organic solvent by either alkaline or acidic reagents, the former having been studied in greater detail. On the basis of these tests, a recovery process may be considered which shows promise both from the standpoint of operation and chemical costs. Under proper conditions, vanadium can also be extracted by the di (2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid and stripping again may be accomplished with either acidic or alkaline reagents. Preliminary studies have been made of these possibilities. In addition to di (2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid, some other organophosphorus acids, have been cursorily examined in respect to their extraction and/or stripping performance.

Introduction: "The uranium-5 w/o chromium alloy has been intensively investigated for use in a power reactor in the as-cast condition. However, when cast sample fuel elements were subjected to irradiation, their stability was found to be unsatisfactory. In order to improve the behavior of the alloy, a program of grain refinement by heat treatment was begun. The effect of chill casting on the heat-treated grain size was also investigated."

This test consisted of a series of helium purges of the pile gas atmosphere to bring the helium content up to about 70 to 80% helium followed by a series of CO{sub 2} purges to restore the pile atmosphere to its initial composition. The purges where spaced roughly four hours apart to enable the reactor to reach a steady temperature before purge was undertaken. The test results are presented in this report.

Summary of K Reactor outlet temperature limits

The purpose of this report is to summarize all actual and potential power level limits under which the K Reactors may be forced to operate during the next year. In addition, a summary of the methods being followed to eliminate each is to be discussed along with a graphical presentation of the relationship of the various limits. For the purpose of this report, it was assumed that all power levels will be attainable from a physics aspect since these problems are discussed elsewhere. It is not the intent of this report to recommend that these power levels be attained but only to indicate what production levels are possible through operation on any one limit. Seven outlet temperature limits govern operation at the K Reactors. They are: TBI Limit; Crosstie Limit; Rear Header Saturation Limit; Bulk Outlet Temperature Limit; Tube Corrosion Limit; Temperature Monitor Limit; and Rupture Control Point. Operation during the summer months of 1957 will require cuts in power in order to remain within these limits unless modes of circumventing a few are found.
