Comparison of the APS and UGIMAG Helmholtz coil systems

UGIMAG is manufacturing the NdFeB permanent magnet blocks to be used in undulator A now being assembled by STI Optronics. The authors would like to be able to compare measurements made at the plant with those made at ANL and potentially with those made at the STI facility. Since there are no permanent magnet standard samples, measurement systems are compared by trading sets of magnets set aside as standards. APS has ten NdFeB permanent magnet blocks supplied by Sumitomo that they use to make these comparisons. These magnet samples have been extensively measured on the APS system. The data include the three vector components of the total magnetic dipole moment of the blocks as well as the spherical coordinates of the vector.

A Charge Distribution Analysis instrument for catalysis and material science applications. Second quarterly technical progress report, January 1, 1994--March 31, 1994

The instrument has four basic components: OEM analytical balance, pivot point and capacitor plates for sensing and controlling the position of the long inverted pendulum, gas confinement tower and high voltage bias electrodes, and furnace. Work during the second quarter has resulted in detailed design of the pivot point and capacitive sensing and control assembly to be attached onto the platen of a Denver Instruments A-series analytical balance.

DWPF Development Plan. Revision 1

The DWPF Development Plan is based on an evaluation process flowsheet and related waste management systems. The scope is shown in Figure 1 entitled ``DWPF Process Development Systems.`` To identify the critical development efforts, each system has been analyzed to determine: The identification of unresolved technology issues. A technology issue (TI) is one that requires basic development to resolve a previously unknown process or equipment problem and is managed via the Technology Assurance Program co-chaired by DWPF and SRTC. Areas that require further work to sufficiently define the process basis or technical operating envelop for DWPF. This activity involves the application of sound engineering and development principles to define the scope of work required to complete the technical data. The identification of the level of effort and expertise required to provide process technical consultation during the start-up and demonstration of this first of a kind plant.

Transport and dynamics in toroidal fusion systems. Report of second year progress, 1993--1994

In this document the author describes an extension of the spatial gridding techniques to an MHD model suitable for the description of the dynamics of toroidal fusion devices. Since the dominant MHD modes in these devices have relatively long toroidal wavelength, the toroidal coordinate is approximated with finite Fourier series. The unstructured, triangular mesh is used to describe the details of the poloidal geometry. With some exceptions, the hydrodynamic variables are treated in a manner analogous to that used in CFD. These quantities (mass, energy, and momentum) are volume based densities that satisfy scalar or vector conservation laws. The electromagnetic variables (the magnetic flux density B and the electric current density J) are area based densities that satisfy pseudo-vector conservation laws, and have no counterpart in fluid dynamics. These variables are also constrained to remain solenoidal. These quantities are represented on the triangular mesh in a new manner that is an extension of that used on rectangular, structured meshes. In this work the author has chosen to solve the primitive MHD equations in order to make the resulting codes and techniques more generally applicable to problems beyond the narrow scope of tokamak plasmas. ScatPlus is a user friendly circuit code and an expandable library of circuit models for electrical components and devices; it can be used to predict the transient behavior in electric circuits. The heart of ScatPlus is the transient circuit solver SCAT written in 1986 by R.F. Gribble. This manual includes system requirements, physics manual, ScatPlus component library, tutorial, ScatPlus screen, menus and toolbar, ScatPlus tool bar, procedures.

INEL cold test pit demonstration of improvements in information derived from non-intrusive geophysical methods over buried waste sites. Phase 2, Final report: Attachment

Under contract between US DOE Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) and the Blackhawk Geosciences Division of Coleman Research Corporation (BGD-CRC), geophysical investigations were conducted to improve the detection of buried wastes. Over the Cold Test Pit (CTP) at INEL, data were acquired with multiple sensors on a dense grid. Over the CTP the interpretations inferred from geophysical data are compared with the known placement of various waste forms in the pit. The geophysical sensors employed were magnetics, frequency and time domain electromagnetics, and ground penetrating radar. Also, because of the high data density acquired, filtering and other data processing and imaging techniques were tested. After completion and analysis of the survey and interpretation over the CTP, the second phase of investigation consisted of testing geophysical methods over the Idaho Chemical Processing Plant (ICPP). The sections of the ICPP surveyed are underlain by a complex network of buried utility lines of different dimensions and composition, and with placement at various depths up to 13 ft. Further complications included many metallic objects at the surface, such as buildings, reinforced concrete pads, and debris. The US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a new partnership with Zond Systems, Inc., of Tehachapi, California. The partnership is the firs to be announced under DOE`s new Value-Engineered Turbine (VET) project. The VET project is expected to lower the cost of manufacturing wind turbines and give the US wind industry a competitive boost.
