Hydrogen Stark Broadening Calculations With the Unified Classical Path Theory (open access)

Hydrogen Stark Broadening Calculations With the Unified Classical Path Theory

Report discussing the case of upper and lower state interaction introduced by a unified theory using a more compact tetradic notation. The general result is then applied to the Stark broadening of hydrogen. The thermal average of the time development operator for upper and lower state interaction is presented. A simple technique for evaluating the Fourier transform of the thermal average has been developed. The final calculations based on the unified theory and on the one-electron theory are compared with measurements in the high and low electron density regime.

Proposal for a search for magnetic monopoles at NAL (open access)

Proposal for a search for magnetic monopoles at NAL

The discovery of a magnetic monopole would be an important experimental result. It would give a reason for the phenomenon of exact electric charge quantization that is not explained yet any other way. Schwinger's dyon theory makes monopoles even more important because they would also be the quarks, i.e., the building blocks of the hadrons. Schwinger's scheme requires the electric charge of the monopoles to be a multiple of 1/3 of the electron charge while all magnetically neutral particles must have electric charges equal to an integer times the electron charge. Monopoles would be also responsible for CP violations.

Neutron-proton diffraction scattering and neutron total cross-secions up to 200-GeV (open access)

Neutron-proton diffraction scattering and neutron total cross-secions up to 200-GeV

The authors propose to use the 0{sup o} neutral beam planned for Experimental Area 2 to measure differential cross sections for np elastic scattering in the diffraction region over the energy range of from 40 to 200 GeV and also total cross sections for neutrons on protons, deuterons, and other nuclei over the same energy range. The proposed experiments would use techniques previously developed by the authors in similar experiments at the Bevatron and the AGS. Most of the apparatus already exists. The two experiments could be run in the same beam, either simultaneously or sequentially. The experiments are simple and place very modest demands on accelerator performance.

Muon - proton inelastic scattering (open access)

Muon - proton inelastic scattering

This experiment will examine muon-proton inelastic scattering for virtual-photon energies of 10 to 110 GeV and for |q{sup 2}| values of 0.2 to 20.0 (GeV/c){sup 2}. The virtual-photon total cross sections {sigma}{sub t} + {epsilon}{sigma}{sub s}, or the equivalent expression in W{sub 1} and W{sub 2}, will be measured over this range of virtual-photon energies and q{sup 2} values. Some separation of {sigma}{sub T} and {sigma}{sub S}, or equivalently W{sub 1} and W{sub 2}, will be made. The multiplicity, momentum spectra and angular spectra of the charged hadrons produced in this reaction will be measured. Some channels such as {mu} + P {yields} {mu} + P + P{sup 0} will be isolated and completely analyzed. The experiment uses a hydrogen target, wire spark chambers and an analyzing magnet of conventional design.

RADIOECOLOGICAL STUDIES ON THE COLUMBIA RIVER Part I (open access)

RADIOECOLOGICAL STUDIES ON THE COLUMBIA RIVER Part I

The use of Columbia River water as a reactor coolant and the subsequent discharge of this cooling water into the River introduces a number of radioactive elements into the river environment. These radionuclides are produced by the neutron activation of stable elements in solution in the cooling water and the sloughing off of radioactive corrosion products from the surfaces of the reactor cooling tubes. The relationships of these radioactive materials to river organisms have been studied since reactor operations began in 1944 (1-10). Radioanalyses in the earlier studies (3, 4), dealing mainly with seasonal variations, species differences, and geographical distribution of radioisotopes by the river biota, were confined to the measurement of total beta emitter activity and to the estimation of relative amounts of phosphorus-32 through decay curve analysis. The purpose of this study is (1) to define the interspecies and seasonal variations in the concentration of several of the more biologically important radionuclides, and (2) to update the findings of some of the earlier investigations.
