Effect of high bulk temperatures on boundary lubrication of steel surfaces by synthetic fluids

"High operating temperatures of new and projected turbine engines require that synthetic fluids be used as lubricants, because these fluids have better thermal stability and viscosity-temperature characteristics than petroleum oils have. An experimental study was conducted to learn the effect of high lubricant bulk temperatures on the boundary lubricating effectiveness of various types of synthetic fluid" (p. 1).

Effect of rotor-and stator-blade modifications on surge performance of an 11-stage axial-flow compressor 1: original production compressor of XJ40-WE-6 engine

Report presenting an investigation to increase the compressor surge-limit pressure ratio of the XJ40-WE-6 turbojet engine at high equivalent speeds. The two compressor modifications investigated included twisting rotor blades to change blade section angles and inserting new stator diaphragms with different blade angles. Results regarding the effect of surge limit on engine performance, performance map of original compressor with mixer, effect of blade modifications on surge line, effect of mixer on surge limit, and effect of compressor modifications on performance are provided.

Effects of High Degrees of Biaxial Stretch Forming on Crazing and Other Properties of Acrylic Plastic Glazing

Memorandum presenting an investigation of the effects of higher degrees of forming in biaxial stretch-forming of polymethyl methacrylate to about 50-percent strain. Sheets of commercial cast polymethyl methacrylate were hot-stretched approximately 100 and 150 percent, respectively, and tests were conducted on this material and on unstretched cotton material. Results regarding the standard tensile tests, stress-solvent crazing, surface abrasion tests, and x-ray diffraction patterns are provided.

The wings were tested with four different bodies of revolution over a range of Mach numbers. Final report on Process Test MR-105-3, Evaluation of larger crossheader screen openings for B, D, and F reactors

The installation of crossheader pressure gauges on the reactors has shown that excessive pressure drops occur across some crossheader screen assemblies, and that the pressure drop across the four inch assemblies in the B, D, and F Reactors is significantly greater than the six inch assemblies at the DR and H Reactors. Since the inlet water system pressure is limited to the 4.5 psi discharge pressure of the secondary pumps, the reduction of pressure resistance downstream of that point would result in higher reactor flow rates and increased boiling limits. This test described in this report was initiated to determine if four inch crossheader screens having equal and 50% greater free-area than DR -- H screens would significantly reduce the crossheader screen pressure drops at the B, D, and F Reactors, and to obtain information regarding cone screen plugging rates with larger size screen openings.

Free-Fall Measurements of the Effects of Wing-Body Interference on the Transonic Drag Characteristics of Swept-Wing-Slender-Body Configurations

Report presenting the results of testing of bodies and wing-body combinations by the free-fall method in order to provide information about drag characteristics of airplanes and their component parts at transonic speeds. Two models with a fineness-ratio-12 body of revolution with 45 degree sweptback wings located at different positions were dropped and equipped with improved drag measuring instrumentation and pressure measuring orifices on the portion of the body expected to be influenced by the presence of the wing. Results regarding pressure data and drag data are provided.

From Summary: "An investigation of the altitude performance of a 20-inch-diameter high-temperature-ratio ram-jet combustor which had been redesigned to provide good combustor efficiency over a wide range of temperature ratios was conducted at zero angle of attack in a free-jet facility at a Mach number of 3.0. Configurations investigated incorporated a cylindrical control sleeve which confined the injected fuel at low over-all fuel-air ratios to about 40 percent of the engine air flow. This provided an optimum fuel-air mixture over a portion of the flame holder when the over-all fuel-air ratio was about 0.02."

Report discussing an investigation to determine the effect of wing leading-edge chord-extensions and drooped leading-edge flaps on the spin and spin-recovery characteristics of models of two swept-wing fighter airplanes. The investigation included chord-extensions in the plane of the wing and chord-extensions deflected in combination with drooped leading-edge flaps. The chord extensions were not found to have an appreciable effect on spin or spin-recovery characteristics when installed in the plane of the wing.

The accelerator to be modeled is a 48 mc/sec cylindrical cavity in the TM010 mode with [formula] repeat length, [formula] gap, 0.25 megavolt per cavity foot peak r.f. gradient and strong focusing magnets alternating polarity at each drift tube.
