From abstract: This abbreviated data report presents results of ground water and stream/surface sediment reconnaissance in the National Topographic Map Series (NTMS) Needles 1' x 2 quadrangle. Surface sediment samples were collected at 1672 sites, at a target sampling density of one site per 13 square kilometers (five square miles). Ground water samples were collected at 49 sites. Neutron activation analysis (NAA) results are given for uranium and 16 other elements in sediments, and for uranium and 9 other elements in ground water. Mass spectrometry results are given for helium in ground water. Field measurements and observations are reported for each site. Analytical data and field measurements are presented in tables and maps.

Supplementary data containing tabulated elemental concentration data in surface sediment and ground water samples in addition to areal distribution maps, histograms, and cumulative frequency plots. Also included is sample site location data for surface and ground water samples and a user's guide. This data accompanies a report on hydrogeochemical and stream sediment reconnaissance in California and Arizona.

Code and output of job control programs (JCL) for basic western ground water data read and scrub for Bakersfield quadrangle. The JCL drives the statistical analysis system (SAS) and FORTRAN programs to produce the modified Candian symbol plot maps, frequency plots, and histograms for ground waters all on one microfiche. A complex pattern of active faults occurs in the southern Amargosa Desert, southern Nye, County, Nevada. These faults can be grouped into three main fault systems: (1) a NE-striking zone of faults that forms the southwest extension of the left-lateral Rock Valley fault zone, in the much larger Spotted Range-Mine Mountain structural zone, (2) a N-striking fault zone coinciding with a NNW-trending alignment of springs that is either a northward continuation of a fault along the west side of the Resting Spring Range or a N-striking branch fault of the Pahrump fault system, and (3) a NW-striking fault zone which is parallel to the Pahrump fault system, but is offset approximately 5 km with a left step in southern Ash Meadows. These three fault zones suggest extension is occurring in an E-W direction, which is compatible with the {approximately}N10W structural grain prevalent in the Death Valley extensional region to the west.

Abstract: Sacramento County expected to begin operation of the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in 1982. The California State Water Resources Control Board has ruled that the plant will not be allowed to release effluent into the Sacramento River when flow in the river is 4,000 cubic feet per second or less. Depending on tide condition, flows less than 4,000 cubic feet per second may occur either once or twice during each 24-hour 50-minute tide cycle when the daily mean flow is less than about 12,000 cubic feet per second. Daily mean flows less than 12,000 cubic feet per second occur about 28 percent of the time. Riverflow at the plant outfall is monitored by an acoustic streamflow measuring system. Regulation of effluent released from the plant will normally be based on real-time flow data computed by the acoustic system. A graphical method for determining the occurrence and duration of flows of 4,000 cubic feet per second and less was developed as a backup system to be used if a temporary failure in the acoustic system occurs.

"The purpose of this report is to present the results of a condition survey performed at March Air Force Base (MAFB), California, during 30 November-6 December 1972. The two major areas of interest considered in this condition survey were the structural condition of the primary airfield pavements and the condition of pavement repairs and the types of maintenance materials that have been used at this airfield" (p. 1).

This report covers the activities of LBL's Accelerator and Fusion Research Division (AFRD) during 1982. In nuclear physics, the Uranium Beams Improvement Project was concluded early in the year, and experimentation to exploit the new capabilities began in earnest. Technical improvement of the Bevalac during the year centered on a heavy-ion radiofrequency quadrupole (RFQ) as part of the local injector upgrade, and we collaborated in studies of high-energy heavy-ion collision facilities. The Division continued its collaboration with Fermilab to design a beam-cooling system for the Tevatron I proton-antiprotron collider and to engineer the needed cooling components for the antiproton. The high-field magnet program set yet another record for field strength in an accelerator-type dipole magnet (9.2 T at 1.8 K). The Division developed the design for the Advanced Light Source (ALS), a 1.3-GeV electron storage ring designed explicitly (with low beam emittance and 12 long straight sections) to generate high-brilliance synchrotron light from insertion devices. The Division's Magnetic Fusion Energy group continued to support major experiments at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), and General Atomic Co. by developing positive-ion-based neutral-beam injectors.
