Theory and measurement of the electron cloud effect.

Photoelectrons produced through the interaction of synchrotrons radiation and the vacuum chamber walls can be accelerated by a charged particle beam, acquiring sufficient energy to produce secondary electrons (SES) in collisions with the walls. If the secondary-electron yield (SEY) coefficient of the wall material is greater than one, a run-away condition can develop. In addition to the SEY, the degree of amplification depends on the beam intensity and temporal distribution. As the electron cloud builds up along a train of stored bunches, a transverse perturbation of the head bunch can be communicated to trailing bunches in a wakefield-like interaction with the cloud. The electron cloud effect is especially of concern for the high-intensity PEP-II (SLAC) and KEK B-factories and at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. An initiative was undertaken at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) storage ring to characterize the electron cloud in order to provide realistic limits on critical input parameters in the models and improve their predictive capabilities. An intensive research program was undertaken at CERN to address key issues relating to the LHC. After giving an overview, the recent theoretical and experimental results from the APS and the other laboratories will be discussed.

Total energy cycle energy use and emissions of electric vehicles.

A total energy cycle analysis (TECA) of electric vehicles (EV) was recently completed. The EV energy cycle includes production and transport of fuels used in power plants to generate electricity, electricity generation, EV operation, and vehicle and battery manufacture. This paper summarizes the key assumptions and results of the EVTECA. The total energy requirements of EVS me estimated to be 24-35% lower than those of the conventional, gasoline-fueled vehicles they replace, while the reductions in total oil use are even greater: 55-85%. Greenhouse gases (GHG) are 24-37% lower with EVs. EVs reduce total emissions of several criteria air pollutants (VOC, CO, and NO{sub x}) but increase total emissions of others (SO{sub x}, TSP, and lead) over the total energy cycle. Regional emissions are generally reduced with EVs, except possibly SO{sub x}. The limitations of the EVTECA are discussed, and its results are compared with those of other evaluations of EVs. In general, many of the results (particularly the oil use, GHG, VOC, CO, SO{sub x}, and lead results) of the analysis are consistent with those of other evaluations.

Bunch compressor and de-compressor in the FEL for satellite power beaming

A FEL of average power 200 kW is being designed at the LBNL for satellite power beaming. It utilizes the radiation of {approximately} 100 MeV electrons with {approximately} 200 A peak current. In order to obtain the desired peak current, the 5mm long electron bunches delivered by a linear accelerator are compressed to 1mm. Furthermore, it is important for the FEL operations that the compressed bunches have a uniform longitudinal density distribution over the entire bunch length. After the FEL, the electron beam is returned to the linear accelerator for deceleration. Since the electron beam acquires approximately 6% energy spread during radiation in the FEL, bunch de-compressor is used between the FEL and the linac to expand the electron bunches back to their original length and to reduce the energy spread. In this paper we present design and analysis of the bunch compressor and the bunch de-compressor that perform needed functions.

Environmental Assessment and Finding of No Significant Impact: Implementation of the Wetland Mitigation Bank Program at the Savannah River Site

The Department of Energy (DOE) has prepared an environmental assessment (EA) (DOE/EA-1205) for the proposed implementation of a wetland mitigation bank program at the Savannah River Site (SRS), located near Aiken, South Carolina. Based on the analyses in the EA, DOE has determined that the proposed action is not a major Federal action significantly affecting the quality of the human environment within the meaning of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA). Therefore, the preparation of an environmental impact statement (EIS) is not required, and DOE is issuing this Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) and Floodplain Statement of Findings.

Flavor tagging nd CP-violation measurements at the Tevatron

The CDF collaboration has adapted several heavy flavor tagging techniques and employed them in analyses of time-dependent flavor asymmetries using data from the Tevatron Run I. The tagging algorithms were calibrated using low-P{sub t} inclusive lepton and dilepton trigger data samples. The tagging techniques were applied to a sample of {approximately} 400 B{sub d}{sup 0}/{anti B}{sub d}{sup 0} {r_arrow} J/{psi}K{sub s}{sup 0} decays and were used to measure the CP violation parameter, sin(2{beta}). Prospects for future improved measurements of the CP violation parameters at the Tevatron are briefly discussed.

Fracture characterization of the large-block test, Fran Ridge, Yucca Mountain, Nevada

The US Department of Energy (DOE) is investigating the suitability of Yucca Mountain as a potential site for the nation's first high-level nuclear waste repository. The site is located about 120 km northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, at the Nevada Test Site. Favorable aspects of Yucca Mountain as a potential repository site include its arid nature and the sorptive properties of the rock materials. The arid environment results in unsaturated conditions at the potential emplacement horizon, which is the Topopah Spring tuff of the Paintbrush Group. The Large Block Test (LBT) was designed to be one of a series of tests at different scales and conditions that assist in defining the physical processes that need to be considered in models of a potential repository in Yucca Mountain. The LBT is a critical test because it is of sufficient size to incorporate a fracture system that is representative of the distribution of fracture dimensions and characteristics--with the exception of major structures, such as faults--that would likely be present in a repository. Increased Oil Production and Reserves from Improved Completion Techniques in the Bluebell Field, Uinta Basin, Utah

The objective of the project is to increase oil production and reserves by the use of improved reservoir characterization and completion techniques in the Uinta Basin, Utah. To accomplish this objective, a two-year geologic and engineering characterization of the Bluebell field was conducted. The study evaluated surface and subsurface data, currently used completion techniques, and common production problems. It was determined that advanced case- and open-hole logs could be effective in determining productive beds and that stage-interval (about 500 ft [150 m] per stage) and bed-scale isolation completion techniques could result in improved well performance. In the first demonstration well (Michelle Ute well discussed in the previous technical report), dipole shear anisotropy (anisotropy) and dual-burst thermal decay time (TDT) logs were run before and isotope tracer log was run after the treatment. The logs were very helpful in characterizing the remaining hydrocarbon potential in the well. But, mechanical failure resulted in a poor recompletion and did not result in a significant improvement in the oil production from the well.

Multi-Bunch Instability Diagnostics via Digital Feedback Systems at PEP-II, DAFNE, ALS and SPEAR

Longitudinal feedback systems based on a common programmable DSP architecture have been commissioned at 4 laboratories. In addition to longitudinal feedback and beam diagnostics these flexible systems have been programmed to provide diagnostics for transverse motion. The diagnostic functions are based on transient domain techniques which record the response of every bunch while the feedback system manipulates the beam. Operational experience from 4 installations is illustrated via experimental results from PEP-II, DAFNE, ALS and SPEAR. Modal growth and damping rates for transverse and longitudinal planes are measured via short (20 ms) transient excitations for unstable and stable coupled-bunch modes. Data from steady-state measurements are used to identify unstable modes, noise-driven beam motion, and noise sources. Techniques are illustrated which allow the prediction of instability thresholds from low-current measurements of stable beams. Transverse bunch train grow-damp sequences which measure the time evolution of instabilities along the bunch train are presented and compared to signatures expected from ion and fast ion instabilities.

Overture: object-oriented tools for overset grid applications

The Overture framework is an object-oriented environment for solving partial differential equations in two and three space dimensions. It is a collection of C++ libraries that enables the use of finite difference and finite volume methods at a level that hides the details of the associated data structures. Overture can be used to solve problems in complicated, moving geometries using the method of overlapping grids. It has support for grid generation, difference operators, boundary conditions, data-base access and graphics. Short sample code segments are presented to show the power of this approach.

Reservoir Characterization, Production Characteristics, and Research Needs for Fluvial/Alluvial Reservoirs in the United States

The Department of Energy's (DOE's) Oil Recovery Field Demonstration Program was initiated in 1992 to maximize the economically and environmentally sound recovery of oil from known domestic reservoirs and to preserve access to this resource. Cost-shared field demonstration projects are being initiated in geology defined reservoir classes which have been prioritized by their potential for incremental recovery and their risk of abandonment. This document defines the characteristics of the fifth geological reservoir class in the series, fluvial/alluvial reservoirs. The reservoirs of Class 5 include deposits of alluvial fans, braided streams, and meandering streams. Deposit morphologies vary as a complex function of climate and tectonics and are characterized by a high degree of heterogeneity to fluid flow as a result of extreme variations in water energy as the deposits formed.

Thermodynamics and stability of the mixed-conducting Sr-Fe-Co-O system.

Mixed-conducting Sr-Fe-Co oxides have potential applications in dense ceramic membranes for high-purity oxygen separation and/or methane conversion to produce syngas (CO + H{sub 2}), because of their combined high electronic/ionic conductivity and significant oxygen permeability. We studied the crystal structure and microstructure of the system in X-ray diffraction experiments and by using scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Thermogravimetric analysis was conducted on the SrFeCo{sub 0.5}O{sub x} sample in environments of various oxygen partial pressures (pO{sub 2}). Conductivity increased while weight decreased with increasing temperature. Activation energy decreased while conductivity increased with increasing pO{sub 2}. The pO{sub 2}-dependent conducting behavior of the SrFeCo{sub 0.5}O{sub x} system can be understood by considering the trivalent-to-divalent transition of transition-metal ions.
