A Silicon, Carbon and Deuterium NMR Investigation of Molecular Templating in Amorphous Silicas

The precise pore sizes defined by crystalline zeolite lattices have led to intensive research on zeolite membranes. Unfortunately zeolites have proven to be extremely difficult to prepare in a defect-free thin film form needed for membrane flux and selectivity. We introduce tetrapropylammonium TPA (a structure directing agent for zeolite ZSM-5) into a silica sol and exploit the development of high solvation stresses to create templated amorphous silicas with pore apertures comparable in size to those of ZSM-5. {sup 29}Si and {sup 2}H NMR experiments were performed to evaluate the efficacy of our templating approach. The {sup 29}Si NMR spectrum of the silica matrix was observed by an intermolecular cross-polarization experiment between the {sup 1}H nuclei of TPA and the {sup 29}Si nuclei in the silica matrix. The efficiency of the cross-polarization interaction was used to investigate the degree to which the matrix formed a tight cage surrounding the template molecule. Normally prepared xerogel materials exhibited only weak interactions between the two sets of nuclei. Drying under reduced pressure, where solvation stresses are maximized, resulted in significantly increased interactions. Analogous materials were prepared using fully deuterated TPA. Strength and shape of the magnetic field of the Fermilab Main Injector dipoles

Measurements of 230 6-meter and 136 4-meter dipoles constructed for the Fermilab Main Injector were carried out as part of the magnet production effort. An automated measurement system provided data on magnetic field strength and shape using several partially redundant systems. Results of these measurements are available for each individual magnet for use in accelerator modelling. In this report we will summarise the results on all of the magnets to characterise the properties which will govern accelerator operation.

Tevatron results on b-quark cross sections and correlations

We report on recent results obtained by the D0 and CDF collaborations on the properties of b-quark production and correlations in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV. The D0 experiment has measured the angular correlations between the b- and {bar b}-quarks using the azimuthal opening angle between their decay muons. This measurement is also used to extract the inclusive b-quark production cross section for |y{sub b}| < 1.0 and is combined with previous Tevatron results. The CDF experiment has made the first direct measurement of b{bar b} rapidity correlations at a hadron collider, measuring the ratio of cross sections obtained in two different rapidity bins. D0 has also measured the inclusive production cross section for muons originating from b-quark decays in the forward region. These results are combined with previous measurements in the central region to obtain a rapidity dependence of the b-quark production cross section.

The FIDAP computer code was used to perform a series of analyses to assess the thermal-hydraulic performance characteristics of the concrete plutonium storage cubicles, as modified for the horizontal placement of 3013 canisters. Four separate models were developed ranging from a full height model of the storage cubicle to a very detailed standalone model of a horizontal 3013 canister.

Application of CZT detectors in nuclear materials safeguards

High-resolution, gamma- and X-my spectrometry are used routinely in nuclear materials safeguards vetication measurements. These measurements are mostly performed with high-purity germanium (HJ?Ge) detectors, which require cooling at liquid-nitrogen temperatures, thus limiting their utility in field and unattended safeguards measurement applications. Sodium iodide (NaI) scintillation detectors do not require cooling, but their energy resolution (10% at 122 keV) is insu&ient for many verification measurements. Semiconductor detectors that operate at room temperatures, such as cadmium-zinc-telhuide (CZT) detectors, with energy resolution performance reaching 2.0% at 122 keV may be used for certain safeguards verification applications. We have developed hardware to utilize CZT detectors in X- and gamma-ray measurement, systems and software to apply such a system in measuring 215U enrichment for safeguards verification purposes. During this reporting period an agreement was entered into with Bechtel Corporation for design and construction of Calderon cokemaking facilities (see enclosed letter of February 28, 1997). A second agreement with Bechtel Enterprises to commercialize the Calderon technology as a worldwide business has progressed; during the forthcoming quarter, it is expected to have in place an agreement with Bechtel Enterprises (see attached letter of February 20, 1997). Thyssen Still Otto Anlagentechnik (TSOA), the world's largest builder of conventional cokemaking facilities indicated that it would be please to join Bechtel and Calderon in the demonstration and implementation of Calderon's cokemaking technology (see attached letter of January, 1997).

Increased Oil Production and Reserves Utilizing Secondary/Terriary Recovery Techniques on Small Reservoirs in the Paradox Basin, Utah

The primary objective of this project is to enhance domestic petroleum production by demonstration and technology transfer of an advanced oil recovery technology in the Paradox basin, southeastern Utah. If this project can demonstrate technical and economic feasibility, the technique can be applied to about 100 additional small fields in the Paradox basin alone, and result in increased recovery of 150 to 200 million barrels of oil. This project is designed to characterize five shallow-shelf carbonate reservoirs in the Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian) Paradox Formation and choose the best candidate for a pilot demonstration project for either a waterflood or carbon dioxide-(CO -) 2 flood project. The field demonstration, monitoring of field performance, and associated validation activities will take place in the Paradox basin within the Navajo Nation. Two activities continued this quarter as part of the geological and reservoir characterization of productive carbonate buildups in the Paradox basin: (1) diagenetic characterization of project field reservoirs, and (2) technology transfer.

Structure-Based Predictive Model for Coal Char Combustion

Progress was made this period on a number of separate experimental and modelling activities. At Brown, the models of carbon nanostructure evolution were expanded to consider high-rank materials with initial anisotropy. The report presents detailed results of Monte Carlo simulations with non-zero initial layer length and with statistically oriented initial states. The expanded simulations are now capable of describing the development of nanostructure during carbonization of most coals. Work next quarter will address the remaining challenge of isotropic coke-forming coals. Experiments at Brown yielded important data on the "memory loss" phenomenon in carbon annealing, and on the effect of mineral matter on high-temperature reactivity. The experimental aspects of the Brown work will be discussed in detail in the next report.

West Hackberry Tertiary Project

The West Hackberry Tertiary Project is a field test of the concept that air injection can generate tertiary oil recovery through the Double Displacement Process. The Double Displacement Process is the gas displacement of a water invaded oil column for the purpose of recovering tertiary oil through gravity drainage. The novel aspect of this project is the use of air as the injection fluid. In Gulf Coast oil reservoirs with pronounced bed dip, reservoir performance has shown that gravity drainage recoveries average 80% to 90% of the original oil in place while water drive recoveries average 50% to 60% of the original oil in place. The target for tertiary oil recovery with the Double Displacement Process is the incremental oil between the 50% to 60% water drive recoveries and the 80% to 90% gravity drainage recoveries. The use of air injection in this process combines the benefits of air`s low cost and universal accessibility with the potential for improved oil recovery resulting from spontaneous in situ combustion. If successful, this project will demonstrate that utilizing air injection in the Double Displacement Process will result in an economically viable tertiary process in many Gulf Coast oil reservoirs where other tertiary processes …

Approximate option pricing

As increasingly large volumes of sophisticated options (called derivative securities) are traded in world financial markets, determining a fair price for these options has become an important and difficult computational problem. Many valuation codes use the binomial pricing model, in which the stock price is driven by a random walk. In this model, the value of an n-period option on a stock is the expected time-discounted value of the future cash flow on an n-period stock price path. Path-dependent options are particularly difficult to value since the future cash flow depends on the entire stock price path rather than on just the final stock price. Currently such options are approximately priced by Monte carlo methods with error bounds that hold only with high probability and which are reduced by increasing the number of simulation runs. In this paper the authors show that pricing an arbitrary path-dependent option is {number_sign}-P hard. They show that certain types f path-dependent options can be valued exactly in polynomial time. Asian options are path-dependent options that are particularly hard to price, and for these they design deterministic polynomial-time approximate algorithms. Various combinations of paper and plastics were carbonized` Performance parameters were assessed and the resulting refuse derived fuel pellets were analyzed for chemical composition and caloric values. Difficulties with performance and reliability of the equipment are discussed.
