Fuel Gas Demonstration Plant Program: Small-Scale Industrial Project. Final report, Phase I

During the Erie internal alternate fuel review in 1976, the ERDA RFP for small scale demonstration plants was released and Erie responded. The basis of the contract proposal included design, construction and operation of a Demonstration Plant, which could be expanded to a full-sized industrial plant. The government specifically required the ability to handle Eastern, high-caking, high-sulfur coal. Erie's proposal was to utilize low-caking, low-sulfur coals with the Eastern coals optional. Phase I activity included selection of a gasifier and bids were solicited in October 1977. Babcock Contractors, Inc. was selected in February 1978, based on price and technical evaluation of the gasifiers. Some delay was experienced in selection activity due to late bids and clarification of bid proposals. Prior to selection activities, Erie, McKee and DOE participated in a gasifier inspection trip, visiting 11 plants in South Africa, Italy and Czechoslovakia. The operations, maintenance and designs included by the solicited vendors were evaluated and compared with site observations. Knowledge gained from the trip was used to evaluate the gasifiers and initiated various trade-off studies to resolve questionable areas. As design work progressed, delays were incurred with subcontractors due to late funding, delayed contractual approvals and disputes arising from DOE …

L2-3 Pre-LOCE Maneuver Core Safety Analysis

The core safety analyses and reactivity control analyses that have been done to support safe operation of the LOFT reactor in the LOCE pre-blowdown (or pre-LOCE) operating mode (Operating Mode 8) for the L2-3 nuclear loss of coolant experiment are presented. Safety analyses done to support LOFT operation in other operating modes (Modes 5, 6, and 7) with changes in operating conditions or assumptions due to requirements for safe operation of the L2-3 test (changes from conditions or assumptions for previous safety analyses for those operating modes) are also presented. The analyses discussed herein do not include analyses for potential loss of coolant accidents, or for accidents during the LOCE blowdown mode (Mode 9), or for potential radiation releases during LOCE operation.

Comparative study of aqueous and solvent methods for cleaning metals (open access)

Comparative study of aqueous and solvent methods for cleaning metals

Studies were performed to determine the comparative effectiveness of solvent and aqueous detergent methods for cleaning various metals. The metals investigated included 304L stainless steel, beryllium, uranium-6.5 wt percent niobium alloy, and unalloyed uranium (/sup 238/U). The studies were initiated in response to governmental regulations restricting the use of some chlorinated solvents. Results showed that aqueous detergent cleaning was more effective than solvents, i.e. trichloroethylene and methyl chloroform, for the removal of light industrial soils. The subsequent adoption of aqueous cleaning at this plant has facilitated waste disposal, which contributed to recorded economic savings. The controlled use of aqueous detergents is environmentally acceptable and has decreased the hazards of fire and toxicity that are generally associated with solvents. 8 tables, 15 figures

Proposed Emulsion Experiment Search for Short Lived Particles at High Energies

It is proposed to conduct an experiment at the National Accelerator Laboratory concerned with the search for new particles having lifetimes between 10{sup -17} and 10{sup -12} second. The experiment will be conducted with an emulsion chamber arranqement and will explore for particles with lifetimes too short to be observed directly with other instruments. Two sidelines of the experiment will be concerned with an improved measurement of the lifetime of the neutral pion and the search for gamma ray bundles arising from higher mass resonances which cannot decay by pion emission.

Classification of gauge groups for unified weak and electromagnetic interactions. UR-654. [Quarks, Lie group] (open access)

Classification of gauge groups for unified weak and electromagnetic interactions. UR-654. [Quarks, Lie group]

General structure of the gauge group C underlying the unified weak and electromagnetic interactions, assuming that G is compact and that all quarks have only electric charges 2/3 and -1/3. Then, it is proven that G cannot contain any exceptional Lie groups G/sub 2/, F/sub 4/, E/sub 6/, E/sub 7/, and E/sub 8/ as its factor. Moreover, the underlying representations for quark multiplets to be used must be one of fundamental representations for each component simple Lie group contained as a factor of G. For example, only spinor representation is allowed for SO(2l + 1) groups. If G is semi-simple in addition, then G must be a product of SU(3l) groups. This latter fact is likely in conflict with the present experimental data.

National Geothermal Information Resource annual report, 1977 (open access)

National Geothermal Information Resource annual report, 1977

The National Geothermal Information Resource (GRID) of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory is chartered by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to provide critically evaluated data and other information for the development and utilization of geothermal energy. Included are both site dependent and site independent information related to resource evaluation, electrical and direct utilization, environmental aspects, and the basic properties of aqueous electrolytes. The GRID project is involved in cooperative agreements for the interchange of information and data with other organizations. There are currently three U.S. data centers working to implement the collection and exchange of information on geothermal energy research and production: the DOE Technical Information Center (TIC), Oak Ridge, the GEOTHERM database of the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, and the GRID project. The data systems of TIC, GEOTHERM and GRID are coordinated for data collection and dissemination, with GRID serving as a clearinghouse having access to files from all geothermal databases including both numerical and bibliographic data. GRID interfaces with DOE/TIC for bibliographic information and with GEOTHERM for certain site-dependent numerical data. The program is organized into four principal areas: (1) basic geothermal energy data; (2) site-dependent data for both electrical and direct utilization; (3) environmental aspects, …
