Measurements of pressure for the TiH/sub x//KClO/sub 4/ system (open access)

Measurements of pressure for the TiH/sub x//KClO/sub 4/ system

An investigation was conducted to measure the pressure obtained when the pyrotechnic mixture TiH/sub x//KClO/sub 4/ was ignited in a confined variable-volume system. It was possible to derive an expression of the form PV/sup ..gamma../ = k for the pressure-volume relationship obtained. This expression is a polytropic expansion of the ideal gas equation that best fits the data generated. For this particular work, values of ..gamma.. = 0.53 and k = 69.3 were obtained where P is in megapascals and V is in cubic centimeters. In addition, estimates of the reaction rates were calculated based on the times to achieve maximum pressure for a given volume system. An explicit expression relating rate to pressure was derived by a simplified least-squares fit of the data obtained.

Mound Laboratory tritium environmental study: 1976--1977 (open access)

Mound Laboratory tritium environmental study: 1976--1977

In the course of an extensive investigation of tritium in the aquifer underlying the Mound Facility site, an unusual behavior was noted for a beta-emitting radionuclide contaminant present in the environs of the abandoned Miami-Erie Canal adjacent to the laboratory site. The soil contaminant was determined to be tritium, of which 90% was in the form of a relatively stable or bound species that was not readily exchangeable with the free water in the soil. (Bound-to-exchangeable transfer half-time was found to be approximately 3 yr.) The contamination was found to be concentrated within two feet of the surface in the center of the canal channel and near the Facility site drainage ditch and canal confluence. In order to characterize the contaminant and to assess its potential for reaching the aquifer, an analysis program and study were initiated in September 1976. The results and findings from the first phase of this work which was completed in February 1977 are the subject of this report.

Aspects of nuclear waste management. Volume 2: post-emplacement hazards (open access)

Aspects of nuclear waste management. Volume 2: post-emplacement hazards

Studies of technical issues relating to nuclear waste management are described. It supplements previous TASC reports on this topic. Volume 1 addresses events occurring before emplacement of the waste in a repository. The subjects addressed are thermal analysis of interim storage accidents and doses to the worst-situated individual in all types of pre-emplacement accidents. Volume 2 deals with the possible release of waste from a geologic repository. Aspects of long-term repository performance which are discussed include water flow around shafts and boreholes and use of water from contaminated wells. New methods and results pertaining to the analysis of uncertainties in long-term risk predictions are also presented.

Review of electron-beam heating of magnetic-mirror confined plasmas, with application to the Tandem Mirror Experiment

This report reviews results from early electron-beam heating experiments and more recent basic beam-plasma physics experiments as well as present theoretical understanding. We find tha rather simple electron-beams could be employed on the Tandem Mirror Experiment (TMX) at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory to carry out electron heating experiments.

Buncher cavity for 750 keV protons

A 50 MHz bunching cavity was built and operated at BNL for studies into the effect of bunching on neutralization of a 750 keV proton beam. Since this cavity was intended for a short testing period, a low cost unit that could be assembled rapidly was desired. This cavity is described.

Feasibility studies of thermonuclear neutron capture synthesis of SHE (open access)

Feasibility studies of thermonuclear neutron capture synthesis of SHE

A variety of thermonuclear neutron sources and neutron capture targets were investigated for their potential of allowing signigicant production of heavy, perhaps superheavy, isotopes. The neutron sources considered range from inertial confinement microexplosives to (underground) macroexplosives. Optimal capture targets appear to be composites containing uranium and protactinium. 1 figure.

Texas Register, Volume 4, Number 27, Pages 1255-1292, April 10, 1979

A weekly publication, the Texas Register serves as the journal of state agency rulemaking for Texas. Information published in the Texas Register includes proposed, adopted, withdrawn and emergency rule actions, notices of state agency review of agency rules, governor's appointments, attorney general opinions, and miscellaneous documents such as requests for proposals. After adoption, these rulemaking actions are codified into the Texas Administrative Code.

Investigation into the dissolution and direct assay of high-fired plutonium dioxide. [Fusion-melt with potassium pyrosulfate and sodium peroxide] (open access)

Investigation into the dissolution and direct assay of high-fired plutonium dioxide. [Fusion-melt with potassium pyrosulfate and sodium peroxide]

A fusion-melt and dissolution assay method has been developed and tested for the quantitative analysis of high-fired plutonium dioxide. The method employs fusion of the plutonium dioxide at temperatures greater than the melting point of an eutectic mixture of potassium pyrosulfate plus sodium peroxide. The resultant melt is then titrated directly by either controlled potential coulometry or a gravimetric titration, using standardized ceric sulfate as the titrant. It has been concluded from these investigations that by using the techniques described, high-fired plutonium dioxide (stochiometric) can be quantitatively dissolved and assayed to a degree heretofore beyond the state-of-the-art, while showing direct traceability to the Federal standards. After fusion, the dissolution and direct assay is applicable to existing routine analytical procedures. The method was designed so as to minimize physical handling, simplify the chemical operations, and maximize the personal safety of the analyst at an appreciable cost savings per analysis. (auth)

Overview of the M. A. I. T. analysis system (machine analysis of the internal threat). [Collusion and illicit use of access]

The problem of the internal threat epitomized by the tactics of collusion and illicit use of access has been structured into a data processing format. The format procedures and analysis are objective; the flexibility of the method allows the security analyst to input his judgment and opinions into the code. By so doing he can interact and determine the effects of interacting with the safeguard system.
