"This is a selected bibliography of books, journal articles and reports published on creep and relaxation in metals and ceramics from 1950 to March 1959. Particular attention has been paid to studies on or applicable to the consideration of creep and relaxation in beryllium oxide. Emphasis has alro been placed on studies of phenomenological materials behavior and high temperature studies."

With the increasing availability of accelerators capable of producing beams of heavy ions it has become useful to know the cross section for a heavy ion to form a compound nucleus by interaction with a target nucleus. The results of calculations based on two simple models are presented here in order to give some idea of the magnitude of this cross section as a function of the energy of the bombarding particle.

Since 1940 ten transuranium elements have been discovered. This lecture describes the history of these elements and the methods used in their discovery.

A method is presented for measuring the average energy of the neutrons from a source. The attenuation of the neutrons by polyethylene is measured by the use of a long counter in good geometry. The attenuation length is a sensitive function of the neutron energy. The average neutron energies from several (o, n) sources have been measured and agree well with values obtained by other techniques.

This report was prepared at the request of the Subcommittee on Radiochemistry of the Committee on Nuclear Science of the National Research Council as a contribution to a proposed master file on the radiochemistry of all the elements. All known material on the radiochemistry of thorium is included in this report.

From abstract: "The Safety Program of the University of California Radiation Laboratory at Livermore, California, is discussed in terms of the functions of the six independent safety groups that comprise the laboratory's primary safety organization, namely, Industrial Safety, Medical Safety, Fire Prevention and First Aid, Health Chemistry, Health Physics, and High-Explosive Safety Groups."

"In these studies ions of several-kilovolts energy were extracted from an ion source located inside one of the peaks of the mirror field...The extraction slot of the source is located near the field injection plane, about midway between the mirror peak and the center, and ions are injected perpendicularly to magnetic field lines. In their traversal of the distance between the mirrors, the ions are in an inhomogeneous magnetic field and have a component of velocity along curved field lines. This gives rise to a to a 'guiding center' drift in the azimuthal direction and prevents the particle trajectory from intersecting the ion source after the first reflection. The magnetic field is increased during the injection period by an amount sufficient to move the reflection surface inside the ion source region by the time the ions have precessed completely about the symmetry axis."

"The code described here was designed to handle calculations of hydrodynamic motion in one-dimensional form, including provision for the disruption of a sample by 'spallation'. The term spallation refers to the rupture of the material by tension, induced by a rarefaction wave proceeding from a free surface."

From abstract: This bibliography consists of references pertaining to "Effects of Nuclear Radiation Upon Electronic and Electrical Components", and to "Electronic and Electrical Components for Critical Environments". References were compiled from the Classified and Unclassified report literature and the published literature. The following report discusses a survey of seventy-seven interactions of K- mesons in flight in nuclear emulsion with seven decays in flight, and finding four inelastic scatterings.

"An experimental study has been made regarding the passage of a beam of 100-kV ions (H⁺ and H₂⁺) across a magnetic field by means of a crossed electric field." This experiment was designed to answer the following questions: "(1) Is there a limit to the current that will traverse a magnetic field by the action of a crossed electric field? If so, what is the limit? (2) Do difficulties arise in maintaining the electric field? (3) For the source employed, what is the angular divergence and current density of the beam?"

From abstract: " This report describes the construction of a plasma source that projects deuterium and titanium ions and eletrons at speeds up to 2 x 10^7 cm/sec."

From abstract: Absolute cross sections for the production of charged secondary particles is the bombardments of aluminum, nickel, silver, and gold by 332-Mev protons, 187-deuterons, and 380-Mev alpha particles have been determined.
