Properties of Uranium Dioxide-Stainless Steel Dispersion Fuel Plates

The physical and mechanical properties of GCRE-type fuel elements were determined from room temperature to 1650 deg F. The fuel elements were prepared by cladding Type 318 stainless steel sheet to a core containing 15 to 35 wt.% UO/ sub 2/ in either prealloyed Type 318 stainless steel or elemental iron-18 wt.% chromium-14 wt. % nickel-2.5 wt. % molybdenum. The tensile strength in the direction perpendicular to the rolling plane decreased from 24,600 psi at room temperature to 9,200 psi at 1650 deg F for the reference fuel plate, whose core contained 25 wt.% UO/sub 2/ in the elemental alloy. The tensile strength in the longitudinal direction for this fuel element ranged from 54,800 psi at room temperature to 14,200 psi at 1650 deg F, with elongation in 2 in. ranging from 8 to 13 per cent. The extrapolated stress for 1000hr rupture life at 1650 deg F was 1800 psi, and a 1.4T bend was withstood without cracking. The mean linear thermal coefficient of expansion was 11.0 x 10/sup -6/ per deg F for the range 68 to 1700 deg F. (auth)

Comparison of Various Heat Exchangers for Liquid-Metal Nuclear Turbojet Over Range of Flight and Operating Conditions

Memorandum presenting an analysis of a large number of liquid-metal-to-air heat-exchanger cores for the nuclear-powered liquid-metal turbojet cycle to determine which types yield the best overall net thrust per total engine weight. The performances of all exchangers considered were initially evaluated at a median condition. The performance of the best of each of the four types was compared with that of a shell-and-tube exchanger with the air flowing through the tubes, operating at the same condition.

Report presenting testing on a 60 degree delta-wing XF-92A airplane at a variety of Mach numbers to obtain measurements regarding buffet-induced fluctuations in normal acceleration and of fluctuations in structural shear load of the left wing. The altitudes tested ranged from 25,000 to 38,000 feet. Results regarding the buffet boundary, wing flow conditions, buffet frequencies, buffet intensities, and a comparison to buffeting of other airplanes are provided.

Investigation of Solvent Degradation Products in Recycled Uranium Recovery Plant Solvent

As part of an investigation of solvent stability, a direct analysis of recycled Uranium Recovery Plant solvent* has been made to determine the type, source, and properties of the impurities which have been generated in the solvent and are present in the solvent after it has been in use for some time. This work has been directed towards the separation and identification of the impurities by compound class, and the conclusions are set forth in this report. Another purpose of this report is to present the separation scheme employed, which will likely find similar application.

Report presenting testing of a model of a supersonic airplane configuration with a 40 degree sweptback wing with circular-arc sections at Mach numbers 0.85 and 1.15 to obtain lateral stability data at low lift and to evaluate the test and analysis technique. Results regarding time history, trim characteristics, amplitude ratio and phase of rolling angular acceleration to angle of sideslip, sideslip derivatives, moment derivatives due to yawing, and a comparison of present data with previously obtained data are provided.

Radiometallurgical Hardness and Weight Results on Irradiated Zirconium and Zircaloy-2 Samples as Requested by the Pile Development Unit

Eight zirconium and eight Zircaloy-2 process tube samples were irradiated in the "H" test loop, Tube 0961-H, so that the corrosion tendencies of the material might be evaluated when exposed to radiation. The samples were delivered to the Radio-metallurgy Building in January, 1955, and examined as requested by C. D. Wilson of the Pile Development Unit, Pile Technology Section.

Aerosol Collection by Wetted Fiberglass Media

A wet collection system for aerosols has been developed using fibrous media. Tests show the performance to be in accord with recently developed theory of collection by fibrous media. The effects of varying aerosol particle size, particle density, and gas velocity have indicated that inertial impaction is the primary collection mechanism. Three-year operating experience on several full scale plant installations shows reliable performance.

Notes Pertaining to Recuplex Product Evaporation

A red-brown liquid formed during the evaporation of simulated Recuplex product solutions containing plutonium, nitric acid, carbon tetrachloride, and tributyl phosphate (TBP). The liquid is soluble in carbon tetrachloride. Concentration of solutions containing a TBP to plutonyl nitrate weight ratio of 0.15 or greater to a pot temperature of 150 deg C caused reactions which produced enough heat to bring the pot contents to a red heat with copious evolution of gases. Evaporation path curves and boiling point data were obtained from batch evaporations with minimum reflux and are presented. Polymeric plutonium(IV) was formed upon concentrating plutonium nitrate solutions of low nitric acid content. The region of polymer formation was defined and is presented. (auth)

A Transonic Wind-Tunnel Investigation of the Trim and Dynamic Response Characteristics of the Horizontal Tail of a 1/7-Scale Model of the Complete Tail of the Grumman XF10F-1 Airplane

"An investigation was made of the trim and dynamic response characteristics of the free-floating horizontal tail of a 1/7-scale model of the complete tail of the Grumman XF10F-1 airplane in the Langley 8-foot transonic tunnel at Mach numbers up to 1.13. The complete tail was mounted in the tunnel on a 3 degree conical support body. Various configurations were investigated. A loss in damping of the horizontal tail at transonic speeds was shown by both tunnel and flight tests" (p. 1).
