A Flight Investigation of the Thermal Performance of Air Heated Propeller

Note presenting the thermal performance of an air-heated propeller, installed on a test airplane, as evaluated by observations of the ice-prevention properties of the propeller during flight in natural icing conditions and by the collection of thermal data on the propeller during flight in clear air and in clouds at temperatures above freezing. The results indicated that the air-heated-propeller installation tested would offer little or no protection to the leading-edge regions of the propeller during flight in severe natural-icing conditions.

A Simple Method of Estimating the Subsonic Lift and Damping in Roll of Sweptback Wings (open access)

A Simple Method of Estimating the Subsonic Lift and Damping in Roll of Sweptback Wings

"A method of modifying existing correction factors of lifting-surface theory to account approximately for the effects of sweep was derived, and these factors were applied to existing lifting-line theories for the lift and damping in roll of swept wings. Despite the simplicity of the resulting formulas the agreement with experimental data for low speeds is very good. The equation for lift is expressed entirely in terms of the geometric characteristics of the wing and the section-lift-curve; the necessity for any charts is thereby eliminated" (p. 1).

Tests of a gust-alleviating wing in the gust tunnel (open access)

Tests of a gust-alleviating wing in the gust tunnel

"Tests were made in the NACA gust tunnel to determine the effectiveness of a torsionally flexible wing with the torsion axis ahead of the locus of the section aerodynamic centers in reducing airplane accelerations due to atmospheric gusts. For three gust shapes, a series of flights was made with the airplane model equipped with either a torsionally flexible or a rigid wing. The results indicated that the torsionally flexible wing reduced the maximum acceleration increment 5 percent for the sharp-edge gust and about 17 percent for gust shapes with gradient distances of 6.8 and 15 chord lengths" (p. 1).

Systematic Wind-Tunnel Measurements on a Laminar Wing With Nose Flap (open access)

Systematic Wind-Tunnel Measurements on a Laminar Wing With Nose Flap

"Results of measurements are given as a supplement to earlier tests for a laminar profile with nose flap; magnitude, form, and angle of attack of the flap were systematically changed. The experiments were carried out at an effective Reynolds number of 8.2 x 10(exp 5). A comparison with measurements on other profiles shows that the effect of a nose flap is essentially dependent upon magnitude of the nose radius coefficient of the profile" (p. 1).

Preliminary Wind-Tunnel Investigation of the Effect of Area Suction on the Laminar Boundary Layer Over an NACA 64A010 Airfoil

Memorandum presenting a preliminary investigation made in the two-dimensional low-turbulence tunnel on an NACA 64A010 airfoil with permeable surfaces to obtain an indication of the stabilizing effect of area suction on the laminar boundary layer. Although the airfoil surface had many waves and irregularities of contour, the data corroborated qualitatively the theoretically predicted stabilizing effect of area suction on a smooth flat plate.

Some effects of rainfall on flight of airplanes and on instrument indications (open access)

Some effects of rainfall on flight of airplanes and on instrument indications

"Several possible effects of heavy rain on the aerodynamic performance of an airplane and of heavy rain and associated atmospheric phenomena on the indications of flight instruments are briefly considered. It is concluded that the effects of heavy rain on the performance of an airplane are not so great as to force the airplane down from moderate altitudes. Serious malfunctioning of the air-speed indicator may occur, however, as a result of flooding of the pitot-static head and subsequent accumulation of water in the air-speed pressure line" (p. 1).

Quantitative Study of Variations in Concentration of Glycerol and Aerosol OT on Foaming Volume of Oil at Room Temperature

"The amount of foam that can be formed in the presence of certain pure chemical agents was investigated by a new method. The effect of variations in concentration and proportion of Aerosol OT and glycerol was studied and the effects of various other mixtures have been given for comparison. Both Gulf Agent and Aerosol-OT - glycerol mixtures, when present in comparable amounts, prohibited the formation of the normal volumes of foam to the same extent and in the optimum cases reduced it to only one-tenth of its normal value" (p. 1).
