Appreciation and Prediction of Flying Qualities (open access)

Appreciation and Prediction of Flying Qualities

"The material given in this report summarizes some of the results of recent research that will aid the designers of an airplane in selecting or modifying a configuration to provide satisfactory stability and control characteristics. The requirements of the NACA for satisfactory flying qualities, which specify the important stability and control characteristics of an airplane from the pilot's standpoint, are used as the main topics of the report. A discussion is given of the reasons for the requirements, of the factors involved in obtaining satisfactory flying qualities, and of the methods used in predicting the stability and control characteristics of an airplane" (p. 1).

Preliminary Investigation of a Ceramic Lining for a Combustion Chamber for Gas-Turbine Use (open access)

Preliminary Investigation of a Ceramic Lining for a Combustion Chamber for Gas-Turbine Use

Combustion chamber liners for gas turbines and experimental set-ups were tested for failure. A ceramic-lined test chamber was operated at fuel/air ratios up to 0.050. Thermal-shock evaluation indicated that a ceramic lining, which expands after firing, would crack but would not fall apart during operation. Refractoriness of the lining and the resistance to mechanical shock were adequate. In general, shell temperature reductions of approximately 400 deg F were effected by the use of this lining at fuel/air ratios of 0.016 and 0.050. The mechanism of failure of the ceramic lining was induced by sudden heating and cooling during operation.

THE CHEMISTRY OF THE REACTION OF URANIUM HEXAFLUORIDE WITH ACTIVATED CARBON (open access)

THE CHEMISTRY OF THE REACTION OF URANIUM HEXAFLUORIDE WITH ACTIVATED CARBON

The effects of temperature, time and other variables on the rate and extent of reaction between UF/sub 6/ and various types, grades and particle sizes of commercial activated carbon have been studied experimentally. It is shown that both hydrolysis and reduction of the UF/sub 6/ occur, the latter more slowly than the former. Reduction leads to the formation of a mixture of fluorocarbons ranging from CF/sub 4/ to a wax-like maternial volatile only above 250 deg C. There is also evidence for the adsorption of UF/sub 6/ on an undetermined substrate. (auth)

A Mathematical Analysis of the Calutron (open access)

A Mathematical Analysis of the Calutron

Abstract: "The definitions of the fundamental measures of calutron operation including enhancement, current ratio, and process efficiency are set forth with derivations of the relationships between them. An analysis of the plant process is carried out for both the tanks limited and the charge limited case. Equations are derived for plant X output and plant X utilization efficiency. Effective production is defined and the value of increment to a mass of product material in terms of effective production is determined. An equation giving the X concentration below which product material should be reprocessed is derived."
