Analysis of an Internally Pressurized Prismatic Cell Can (open access)

Analysis of an Internally Pressurized Prismatic Cell Can

This report contains an elastic stress and displacement analysis of a prismatic cell can subjected to internal pressure. A computer program was written to perform the analysis. The results show that, for the geometry chosen, the thicknesses of the cell-can walls and the magnitude of the internal pressure are the most important parameters that determine the stresses and deformations of the cell can. Recommendations for future studies are included.

Development of Advanced Batteries at Argonne National Laboratory : Summary Report for 1979

A summary for 1979 of Argonne National Laboratory's program on the development of advanced batteries is presented. These batteries are being developed for electric-vehicle propulsion and stationary energy-storage applications. The principal cells under investigation at present are of a vertically oriented, prismatic design with one or more inner positive electrodes of FeS or FeS2, facing negative electrodes of Li-Al alloy, and molten LiCl-KCl electrolyte; the cell operating temperature is 400 to 500 degrees C. A small effort on the development of a calcium/metal sulfide cell is also being conducted.

Effects of Alterations to Low Gradient Reaches of Utah Streams (open access)

Effects of Alterations to Low Gradient Reaches of Utah Streams

This report describes an investigation of the effects of stream channelization on fish and macro-invertebrates in low gradient reaches of Blacksmith Fork River and the Logan River in the floodplain of Cache Valley in northern Utah. Channelization adversely affected both fish and macro-invertebrate populations and biomass, with the severity of impact directly related to the amount and duration of disturbance of the physical habitat.

Analysis of Stream Quality in the Yampa River Basin, Colorado and Wyoming (open access)

Analysis of Stream Quality in the Yampa River Basin, Colorado and Wyoming

From introduction: This report relates to the first of the above objectives by describing stream quality in the Yampa River basin through 1976, with particular emphasis on conditions from August 1975 through September 1976. The content of this report is, at times, relatively technical. This is intentional. The report is aimed not at planners and decision makers but rather at those persons assigned the task of having to design, implement, and interpret a river basin assessment. The techniques and procedures used to determine ambient stream quality in the Yampa River basin have been presented in detail so that their applicability to other river basins can be determined. For the planner and decision maker, the results presented in this report are summarized in less technical terms in phase-l (Steele and others, 1979) and phase-ll summary reports.

Plan of Study for the Northern Atlantic Coastal Plain Regional Aquifer System Analysis (open access)

Plan of Study for the Northern Atlantic Coastal Plain Regional Aquifer System Analysis

Abstract: Sediments of Cretaceous to Holocene age compose the Northern Atlantic Coastal Plain aquifer system in an area of 50,000 square miles from North Carolina to New York. The aquifer system is the principal source of water supply for most of the area. About 1.4 billion gallons are withdrawn each day. Increasing pumpage has create~ problems such as declining water levels, saltwater intrusion, and land subsidence. The U.S. Geological Survey has begun a comprehensive study of the aquifer system that will define the geology, hydrology, and geochemistry of the system. The effects of future utilization of the aquifer system will be determined and alternative water withdrawal plans will be evaluated through computer simulation modeling. This report describes the objectives, organization, and work plans of the study.

Geology and Uranium Favorability of the Sonora Pass Region, Alpine and Tuolumne Counties, California (open access)

Geology and Uranium Favorability of the Sonora Pass Region, Alpine and Tuolumne Counties, California

From project objectives: The Sonora Pass region was identified by the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) as a potential uranium resource area because of past uranium production at the Juniper Mine and reported high-grade occurrences in other buried fluvial channels which are Tertiary in age. The objective of the Sonora Pass drilling project was to obtain subsurface data that would increase the accuracy of uranium reserve estimates for the project area.
