Biaxial Creep-Fatigue Behavior of Type 316H Stainless Steel Tube

Biaxial creep-fatigue test data for Type 316 stainless steel tubes at 1100*Y are presented. The specimens were subjected to constant internal pressure and fluctuating axial strain with and without hold times in tension as well as compress ion. The results show that internal pressure significantly affects diametral ratchetting and axial stress range. Axial tensile hold is found to he more damaging than axial compressive hold even cinder a biaxial state of stress.

Sorption--desorption studies on tuff. I. Initial studies with samples from the J-13 drill site, Jackass Flats, Nevada

Distribution coefficients were determined for sorption--desorption of radionuclides between each of three different types of tuff from drill hole J-13 at the Nevada Test Site and water from that well. The measurements were performed under atmospheric conditions at 22{sup 0}C and 70{sup 0}C. Sorption ratios vary greatly with lithologic variety of tuff. A tuff high in zeolite minerals has high sorption ratios (in decreasing order) for Eu, Ba, Cs, and Am and intermediate ratios for Sr and Pu. A tuff high in glass shows very high ratios for Ba, Sr, and Cs, intermediate values for Am and Pu, and low values for Ce and Eu. A devitrified tuff similar mineralogically to a microgranite exhibits intermediate values for Ba, Cs, Am, and Pu and low values for Eu, Ce, and Sr. Values for Ru are low, and those for Mo, Sb, and I are very low or zero for the three types. 34 figures, 32 tables.

Statistical Methods for Evaluating Sequential Material Balance Data

Present material balance accounting methods focus primarily upon the "material unaccounted for" (MUF) statistic, which utilizes the data from only one material balance period as an indicator of a possible loss of nuclear material. Typically a cumulative MUF (CUMUF) statistic, which utilizes all the available flow data, is also calculated; but there is no statutory requirement that it be reported or evaluated. Previous work has shown that cumulative MUF has greater power than MUF to detect small constant losses. Techniques which emphasize the sequential nature of MUF (that is, MUF as a sequence of values related over time) are also expected to be more sensitive for detecting losses. The recursive estimation algorithm known as the Kalman filter has been proposed as a possible solution which uses the above idea. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the application of the Kalman filter to the MUF problem, to propose other approaches to the problem, and to re-examine the traditional MUF and cumulative MUF statistics in more general settings. ENVIRONMENTAL SURVEILLANCE AT HANFORD FOR CY-1978

Environmental data collected during 1978 show continued compliance by Hanford with all applicable state and federal regulations. Data were collected for most environmental media including air, Columbia River water, external radiation, foodstuffs (milk, beef, eggs, poultry, and produce) and wildlife (deer, fish, and game birds), as well as soil and vegetation samples. In general, offsite levels of radionuclides attributable to Hanford operations during 1978 were indistinguishable from background levels.

Optimization of an Analytical Electron Microscope for X-Ray Microanalysis: Instrumental Problems

The addition of an energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer to a modern transmission or scanning transmission electron microscope can provide a powerful tool in the characterization of materials. Unfortunately this seemingly simple modification can lead to a host of instrumental problems with respect to the accuracy, validity, and quality of the recorded information. This tutorial reviews the complications which can arise in performing· x-ray microanalysis in current analytical electron microscopes. The first topic treated in depth is fluorescence by uncollimated radiation. The source, distinguishing characteristics, effects on quantitative analysis and schemes for elimination. or minimization as applicable to TEM/STEMs, D-STEMs and HVEMs are discussed. The local specimen environment is considered in the second major section where again detrimental effects on quantitative analysis and remedial procedures, particularly the use of "low-background" specimen holders, are highlighted. Finally, the detrimental aspects of specimen contamination, insofar as they affect x-ray microanalysis, are discussed. It is concluded that if the described preventive measures are implemented, reliable quantitative analysis is possible.

RADIOLOGICAL STATUS OF THE GROUND-WATER BENEATH THE HANFORD PROJECT JANUARY-DECEMBER 1978

This report is one of a series prepared annually for the Department of Energy, to provide an evaluation of the status of ground-water contamination resulting from Hanford's onsite discharges. Data collected during 1978 describe the movement of major plumes {{beta}{sub t}, {sup 3}H, NO{sub 3}) that respond to the influences of ground-water flow, ionic dispersion and radioactive decay. The total beta plume continues to recede, with the exception of a beta source that is beginning to show up in the 300 Area, a result of minor spills and leaks which have occurred during the operating life of the 300 Area. The tritium plume continues to expand and is mapped as having reached the Columbia River, although its contribution to the river cannot be distinguished from that attributable to atmospheric fallout. The plume now shows much the same configuration as in 1977. The nitrate plume shows general stability relative to its size with concentrations in the vicinity of the 100-H Area continuing to be high as a result of leaks from the evaporation facility. THERMAL PERFORMANCE OF BUILDINGS AND BUILDING ENVELOPE SYSTEMS: AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

A bibliography of published papers describing models, measurement techniques, apparatus, and data for the thermal performance of whole buildings and building envelope systems has been collected (aggregate energy consumption of whole buildings, performance of HVAC equipment, and solar technologies are not included). Summary descriptions of the content of each citation are provided. Measurements on whole buildings or on systems other than walls are sparse. However, new and recently completed measurement facilities are increasing these capabilities. Measurements under dynamic conditions are difficult to accomplish and few reliable data exist. Some analogs have been explored experimentally and analytically. Citations on analytical models are selective and concentrate on methodology that forms the basis of computer programs for whole-building energy analysis. Interesting future directions include new approaches to dynamic measurements, both in the laboratory and in the field, for envelope systems and for whole buildings.

This well of opportunity (WOO) geopressured-geothermal prospect has been drilled to 15,265 feet by Southport Exploration, Inc. (Southport) as the Beulah Simon No. 2 Well. The well is located in Section 26, T11S, R2E, Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, approximately four miles northeast of the town of Kaplan. The wellsite is shown on the enclosed section of USGS topographic sheet, ''Lafayette, La.'', and is accessible by State Highway 13 from Interstate Highway 10. The well was drilled approximately one mile east of the Southport et al. Beulah Simon No. 1 Well in the Cossinade Field. The Beulah Simon No. 1 Well is producing natural gas from a zone which is separate and distinct from the target reservoir in the No. 2 Well.

Chemical, Physical, and Radiological Quality of Selected Public Water Supplies in Florida, November 1977-February 1978

Abstract: Virtually all treated public water supplies sampled in Florida meet the National Inter-Primary and Proposed Secondary Drinking Water Regulations. These findings are based on a water-quality reconnaissance of 129 treated public supplies throughout the State during the period November 1977 through February 1978. While primary drinking water regulation exceedences were infrequent , lead, selenium, and gross alpha radioactivity in a very few water supplies were above established maximum contaminant levels. Additionally , the secondary drinking water regulation parameters--dissolved solids, chloride, sulfate, iron, color, and pH--were occasionally detected in excess of the proposed Federal regulations. The secondary regulations, however, pertain mainly to the aesthetic quality of drinking water and not directly to public health aspects.

From abstract: A 1-kilometer stream reach receiving leachate-enriched water from a small municipal landfill was studied from 1971-75 to document streamflow rates and chemical quality of the stream and ground water. The distribution of benthic invertebrates and microorganisms in the stream above the landfill was markedly different from that below it; the difference is attributed to the inflow of leachate.

From abstract: Sedimentary rocks of Cambrian and Ordovician age form a major aquifer system in most of Wisconsin and Iowa, northern Illinois, northwestern Indiana, southeastern Minnesota, and northern Missouri. Many metropolitan areas depend on the aquifer for all or part of their water supplies. Declines in potentiometric head have been large in the most heavily pumped areas, most notably Chicago, Milwaukee-Waukesha, Minneapolis-St. Paul, and Des Moines.

From abstract: During the summer of 1977, 1268 water and 1206 sediment samples were collected from 1292 lakes and streams throughout the 33 600-km2 area within the boundaries of the McGrath and Talkeetna National Topographic Map Series quadrangles in south-central Alaska. Each of the water samples was analyzed for uranium and 12 other elements, and each of the sediment samples was analyzed for uranium, thorium, and 41 other elements. All of the field and analytical data are listed in appendixes to this report, but only the uranium and thorium data are discussed herein.

Abstract: The results of analyses of the airborne gamma radiation and total magnetic field survey flown for the region identified as the Tonopah National Topographic Map NJll-5 is presented in Volume I and II of this report. The airborne data gathered is reduced by ground computer facilities to yield profile plots of the basic uranium, thorium and potassium equivalent gamma radiation intensities, ratios of these intensities, aircraft altitude above the earth's surface, total gamma ray and earth's magnetic field intensity, correlated as a function of geologic units. The distribution of data within each geologic unit, for all surveyed map lines and tie lines, has been calculated and is included. Two sets of profiled data for each line are included with one set displaying the above-cited data. The second set includes only flight line magnetic field, temperature, pressure, altitude data plus magnetic field data as measured at a base station. A general description of the area, including descriptions of the various geologic units and the corresponding airborne data, is included also.

Manufacturing cost of flame heated thermionic converters. Topical report

The cost of thermionic converters has been estimated in support of the cost calculations for thermionic topping of central station powerplants. These calculations supersede the previous calculations made in 1975 and use a design concept similar to the current configuration of flame-heated converters. The cost of converters was estimated by obtaining quotations from manufactureres whenever possible. The selling cost was found to be $110 per kilowatt.

Economic implications of fusion-fission energy systems

The principal conclusions that can be made based on the estimated costs reported in this paper are twofold. First, hybrid reactors operating symbiotically with conventional fission reactors are a potentially attractive supply alternative. Estimated hybrid energy system costs are slightly greater than estimated costs of the most attractive alternatives. However, given the technological, economic, and institutional uncertainties associated with future energy supply, differences of such magnitude are of little significance. Second, to be economically viable, hybrid reactors must be both fuel producers and electricity producers. A data point representing each hybrid reactor driver-blanket concept is plotted as a function of net electrical production efficiency and annual fuel production. The plots illustrate that the most economically viable reactor concepts are those that produce both fuel and electricity.
