Mercury spectra and photosensitized reactions in low temperature matrices. Final report (open access)

Mercury spectra and photosensitized reactions in low temperature matrices. Final report

The chemical properties of atomic phosphorus, hydrogen and mercury have been investigated with emphasis on the properties of translationally or electronically energetic atoms. Excitation processes have included neutron activation, ultraviolet irradiation, thermal dissociation, electron bombardment, electrical discharge and field ionization. The quenching of Hg(6/sup 3/P/sub 1/) and Hg(6/sup 3/P/sub 0/) atoms by hydrogen and hydrocarbons in the gas phase and by hydrocarbons in the solid phase have been studied. Gas-solid reactions of energetic tritium species with thin films of hydrocarbons have been investigated. Evidences of both hot and thermal reactions were observed in varying proportions depending upon the means by which the energetic tritium species were produced.

Electron impact excitation of carbon and oxygen ions (open access)

Electron impact excitation of carbon and oxygen ions

This report is an attempt at a comprehensive compilation of currently available theoretical data on electron impact excitation of carbon and oxygen ions. It is designed to be of use primarily to theoretical atomic physicists, allowing them a broader than usual view of how various approximations compare. We do not attempt to place an estimate on the accuracy to which any of the collision strengths are known. The reader may obtain some idea of the accuracy from the spread in the calculations. Further, we do not evaluate rate coefficients or make any comparison with observed results. We do provide simple analytic fits to the data, where possible, thus allowing the reader to make comparison with observation or evaluate rate coefficients if he desires. The present data contains little about resonance effects, due to the difficulty of their presentation. It is possible that resonances could make a considerable change in the average collision strength near threshold, and this topic requires further study.

Large area silicon sheet task low-cost silicon solar array project. Fifth quarterly progress report, January 1, 1977--April 1, 1977

The seeded growth furnace with the slotted molybdenum susceptor has been operated during the past quarter. Flat sheets of sapphire were used as the tray, and local cooling at the tin-silicon alloy surface was provided by a symmetric water-cooled jet. The silicon surface growth obtained during the past quarter has been consistently polycrystalline. This poor growth is attributed to impurities in the seeded growth furnace, caused by leakage into the system. Two sources have been identified: deteriorating neoprene O-rings and leaks of cooling water from the jet nozzle. The O-rings were replaced with indium gaskets, and the nozzle is being rebuilt. Weight loss measurements of the sapphire tray plates indicate that they suffer negligible attack by tin-silicon alloy melts at 1000/sup 0/ to 1100/sup 0/C. The growth habit of crystals nucleated spontaneously at the tin-silicon alloy melt surface has been studied. The crystal growth observed is consistent with dendritic and web growth from (111) singly twinned triangular nuclei. Examples of planar surface growth of small (less than 0.1 mm), thin crystals from these twinned surface seeds have been observed.

Overview of the geothermal energy development program at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (open access)

Overview of the geothermal energy development program at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory

The program consists generally of development of advanced conversion systems, with strong emphasis on a systems approach to find solutions of the problems of scale formation, corrosion/erosion of materials, spent brine disposal and solids handling, and development of reliable, efficient energy conversion systems with strong emphasis on development of the total flow concept. The status of the various parts of this program is reviewed briefly. (MHR)

Total integrated energy system (TIES) feasibility analysis for the downtown redevelopment project, Pasadena, California (open access)

Total integrated energy system (TIES) feasibility analysis for the downtown redevelopment project, Pasadena, California

The purpose of this study is to determine the most desirable method of serving the energy needs of a commercial development to be constructed in Pasadena, California. The factors that determine maximum desirability consist of the following: (1) maximum economic benefit to the energy user and to the surrounding community; (2) minimum usage of energy by both the energy user and the surrounding community; and (3) minimum introduction of pollutants into the community. The methods studied were the Total Integrated Energy System (TIES) concept in several configurations. The TIES concept differs from the ''total energy concept'' in the respect that the electric power output of the local power generation plant goes into the utility company distribution grid, rather than to the user. The user is served power from the grid, as with a conventional system, but also receives heating and cooling media produced from power generation by-product heat from the TIES plant. The effect of this concept is that a very large source-sink for electric energy is provided by the utility company grid. This, in turn, permits the plant to operate in response to instantaneous thermal demand, rather than instantaneous power demand. No auxiliary firing is ever required. No waste …

Measurement of the neutron-induced fission cross section of /sup 232/Th relative to /sup 235/U from 0. 7 to 30 MeV. [0. 7 to 30 MeV] (open access)

Measurement of the neutron-induced fission cross section of /sup 232/Th relative to /sup 235/U from 0. 7 to 30 MeV. [0. 7 to 30 MeV]

Continuing fission cross section ratio studies at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, one has measured the /sup 232/Th//sup 235/U fission cross-section ratio from 0.7 to 30 MeV. Using the threshold method, one obtained a value of 0.1081 +- 0.0022 for the average cross-section ratio in the interval from 1.75 to 4.00 MeV.

Measurement of the angular correlation parameters in the BETA decay of polarized. lambda. hyperons (open access)

Measurement of the angular correlation parameters in the BETA decay of polarized. lambda. hyperons

Final results are presented from an experimental investigation of the ..beta.. decay of polarized ..lambda.. hyperons with a large-aperture magnetic spectrometer. The data sample consists of 544 events. The values A/sub ..nu../ = 0.72 +- 0.12, A/sub e/ = 0.05 +- 0.12, and A/sub p/ = -0.47 +- 0.12 are obtained for the three spin asymmetry parameters, and A/sub e..nu../ = 0.07 +- 0.12 for the electron-neutrino correlation. The lepton-plane correlation with the ..lambda.. spin, D = 0.11 +- 0.20, is consistent with no violation of time reversal invariance. The data yield an axial vector to vector form factor ratio of g/sub 1//f/sub 1/ = 0.53/sub -0.09//sup +0.11/. The Cabibbo model value is g/sub 1//f/sub 1/ = 0.71.

Experimental investigation of the trapping and energy loss mechanisms of intense relativistic electron rings in hydrogen gas and plasma (open access)

Experimental investigation of the trapping and energy loss mechanisms of intense relativistic electron rings in hydrogen gas and plasma

The results of an experimental study on the trapping and energy loss mechanisms of intense, relativistic electron rings confined in Astron-like magnetic field geometries are presented. The work is subdivided into four sections: gas trapping; average ring electron energetics; plasma trapping, and hollow-beam cusp-injection into gas and plasma. The mechanisms by which the injected beam coalesces into a current ring in the existing Cornell RECE-Berta facility are considered. To investigate the nature of ring electron energy loss mechanisms following completion of the trapping process, a diagnostic was developed utilizing multi-foil X-ray absorption spectroscopy to analyze the Bremsstrahlung generated by the electrons as they impinge upon a thin tungsten wire target suspended in the circulating current. Finally, a set of preliminary experimental results is presented in which an annular electron beam was passed through a coaxial, non-adiabatic magnetic cusp located at one end of a magnetic mirror well.
