Baseline Gas Turbine Development Program Second Quaterly Progress Report
Progress is reported for a program to demonstrate by 1976 an experimental gas turbine powered automobile which meets the 1976 Federal Emissions standards and which is competitive in fuel economy, performance, reliability, and potential manufacturing cost with the conventional piston engine powered, standard size American automobile. Procurement delays have caused engine deliveries to slip one to two months. Assembly of Engine 3 with special instrumentation for NASA and Engine 4 to be used in the first vehicle has commenced. Resolution of some intake design details will complete the vehicle installation design. Other vehicle component and modification efforts are on schedule. Support activity has included: (1) studies and proposals for improving engine fuel economy; (2) ceramic recuperator calculations; (3) cooperation with NASA's program by giving a design review, providing engine drawings, planning and fabricating instrumentation for their engine, and advising them on matters relating to their engine test facilities; (4) refinement of a combustor test procedure; and (5) two ''sixth generation'' vehicle demonstrations. Engine endurance activity has started with the evaluation of a proprietary molded insulation. Limited progress was made in the experimental determination of variable geometry combustor control parameters. Ceramic regenerator specifications were prepared. Computer programs for AGS injection.
Since the injection system of the AGS requires very tight control over many parameteres, computer programs were written to achieve this. One program initiates an emittance measurement device and reduces its output data to provide the characteristics of the linac beam. The second program utilizes these results to set six quadrupoles and four bending magnets so that requested beam parameters are obtained at the inflector exit. A third program measures the circulating beam and attempts to maximize it by adjustment of quadrupoles and bending magnets. These programs and our experience in using them online are described.

Contributions From the Alpha Emitter, $sup 210$Po, to the Natural Radiation Environment of the Marine Organisms.
In describing the natural background radiations in the marine environment, emphasis in the past has been **** to contributions from potassium and cosmic rays; much less has be**** about the alpha emitters. However, there is evidence that many marine organisms accumulate natural alpha emitters to levels that might be contributing substantially to their burden from ionizing radiation. There are increasing opportunities for alpha emitters to enter the ocean because of the increasing use of plutonium-239. Distributions of polonium-210 are of interest because it has been found that this natural nuclide is technically much easier to follow, yet its distributions might serve to give some warning as to the probable fate of plutonium. Concentration of polonium-210 in a variety of marine organisms are compared and also the radioactive burdens that may be inferred from bulk tissue samples. Some difficulties of interpretations are discussed and the need for more detailed measurements in specific organs and tissues. Some inferences about polonium-210 from lead-210 measurements also are presented.

The deposition of particulates in air sampling tubes
An investigation was performed to define particulate deposition in exhaust air sampling tubes for plutonium areas. Twelve sampling tubes were washed with nitric acid. Residues from wash solutions were counted for total alpha activity. Results indicate negligible sample loss due to particulate deposition in sample delivery tubes.

Determination of Vertebral Bone Mineral Mass by Transmission Measurements.
A dichromatic photon attenuation technique for the precise determination of lumbar vertebral bone mineral mass in vivo has been developed. A 100 mCi source of $sup 153$Gd was used as a source of 44 keV and 100 keV photons. The collimation of the NaI(T1) detection defined a 2.5 cm by 1 cm beam at the vertebra. The average of three scans at 2.5 cm intervals along the vertebral column was determined.

Development and Application of a Beta-Gamma-Gamma Multidimensional Spectrometer.
A beta-gamma-gamma multidimensional spectrometer has been developed which employs two 12-inch diameter by 8-inch thick NaI (Tl) crystals with associated 4-inch thick NaI light piped and two 5-inch diameter by 1/2-inch thick gas proportional counters as principal detectors and which utilizes two 40-inch diameter by 24-inch thick plastic phosphors as anticoincidence shields. The detector system is coupled to two 4096 word computer memories which record gamma-ray events in coincidence with either beta detector. The gamma-ray energies identify the relative position of the radioactivity in the specimen being analyzed. The background and efficiency of the system and its application to the identification of radionuclides in environmental, biological, and extraterrestrial materials are discussed.
