A Computer Program for the Kinetic Treatment of Radiation-Induced Simultaneous Chemical Reactions

"WR16, a program written in 3600-FORTRAN for a CDC-3600 digital computer, calculates, as a function of time, the concentrations of all the species taking part in the simultaneous first- and second-order chemical reactions occurring during and after exposure to ionizing radiations occurring during and after exposure to ionizing radiation of any chemical system (for example, an aqueous solution). Homogeneous reaction kinetics is assumed for the computation. The variation of electrical conductivity and optical absorbance of the system can also be computed" (p. 1).

A Computer Program for the Optimization of Organic-Cooled D$sub 2$O Reactors (open access)

A Computer Program for the Optimization of Organic-Cooled D$sub 2$O Reactors

The portion of the Cost Optimization Program, COP, that is used to design and calculate costs for organic-cooled, heavy-water-moderated power reactor plants is coded in FORTRAN II for an IBM 704 computer. The code is applicable for power reactor plants with electrical outputs of 300, 500, or 1000 MWe. The main features of the code include: (1) an automatic design of concentric fuel tubes of either UO$sub 2$ or UC including the calculaion of the operating conditions of the fuel assembly and a determination of the reactivity parameters for a unit cell, (2) the determination of the number of fuel positions and an estimate of the fuel life for several fuel charging strategies, (3) an evaluation of the fuel fabrication costs for the specific fuel assembly design and reactor throughput, (4) the design and cost determination for the major reactor equipment, the building structures, and the reactor auxiliary facilities, (5) an automatic optimization of the turbine plant conditions and of the steam generator design, and (6) a final editing of the reactor plant conditions, and the capital, fuel, and operating components of the total electrical power costs.

Earth sciences waste disposal investigations, July--December 1965 (open access)

Earth sciences waste disposal investigations, July--December 1965

The Hanford Project has over 500 wells which are used for the surveillance of radionuclides in the ground resulting from waste disposal. Wells are located at disposal sites to monitor the migration of radionuclides in the soil and to determine when a disposal facility is to be abandoned. Outside of the immediate disposal areas, wells are sampled to determine the movement of contaminants in the ground water zone. The spread of wastes in unconfined ground water aquifers is followed by routine sampling, and the confined aquifers in the area are sampled frequently where possible. Maps of gross BETA and tritium concentrations in the ground water are presented to define contamination spread from the disposal areas during the last six months of 1965. (auth)

Report issued by the Argonne National Laboratory discussing the PACER-65 computer program. As stated in the summary, the program "has been developed and utilized for flow sheet calculations and process-data reduction. PACER-65 is an executive program in which material- and energy-balance equations, conversion factors, etc., for each processing step are described by separate subroutines" (p. 5). Measurement of the K{sup 0}{sub S} - K{sup 0}{sub L} mass difference by the time dependence of strangeness (open access)

Measurement of the K{sup 0}{sub S} - K{sup 0}{sub L} mass difference by the time dependence of strangeness

The magnitude of the K{sup 0}{sub S} - K{sup 0}{sub L} mass difference has been measured by monitoring the time dependence of the strangeness of neutral K's produced in hydrogen and deuterium in the LRL 25 '' hydrogen bubble chamber. The particles originate as K-bar{sup 0} in K{sup -} change-exchange scatters at .85 to 1.15 Bev/c; the signature for an S = -1 reaction is the production of a hyperon. Seventy- seven events were found, obtaining {Delta}{omega} = 0.50 =- 0.15, measured in units of inverse K{sup 0}{sub S} lifetime. This and two other recent measurements using the same method are consistent with one another and with measurements of {Delta}{omega} by other means. A combined ''world average'' of nine reasonably consistent measurements gives {Delta}{omega} = 0.60 +- 0.06.
