The Columbia River Cooling Program CY-1965 (open access)

The Columbia River Cooling Program CY-1965

The Columbia River Cooling Program basically consists of effecting a reduction in river temperature at the Hanford site during the summer season. The implementation of this program in recent years has been accomplished through the selective and controlled discharge of waste water at Grand Coulee Dam. The purpose of this report is to describe the river cooling program conducted in CY-1965 by Facilities Engineering personnel, and present the program results.

EG&G Film Magazine: Type XPH-47 (open access)

EG&G Film Magazine: Type XPH-47

The EG&G Film Magazine Type XPH-47 was designed to meet specific NC-135 program requirements for a reliable, simple and economical unit which would adapt the LC-4 camera for moving film oscilloscopic photography at film speeds suitable for the separation of oscilloscope sweep traces. Essentially, the XPH-47 is a standard Beattie-Coleman Type 32800 magazine, redesigned for incorporation of features which would fulfill these requirements. One such feature - replacement of the original motor with a new motor having a control circuit - provides constant speed operation and consequently, reliability not achieved by other film magazines. The XPH-47 is a self-contained unit consisting of both supply and takeup spools and a film transport mechanism. It is normally loaded in subdued light with 100 feet of 35-mm film and then placed on the camera. The magazine is removed from the camera, and the film is unloaded in a darkroom or in subdued light. The XPH-47 can be wired for use directly on the LC-4 camera to allow magazine operation with the shutter open. If desired, with additional minor wiring changes in the LC-4 camera, film motion signals can be routed through the camera to an external control panel. The leads to the two …

Thoria target element failures (open access)

Thoria target element failures

The thoria program at Hanford was initiated in response to an order placed by the Atomic Energy Commission for the production of uranium-233 from the irradiation of thorium or thorium oxide (thoria). The initial orders called for approximately 130 kg U-233 and subsequent orders have since increased this figure. This report provides a brief history of the thoria program, an analysis of the thoria target element failures which occurred during the irradiation phase, and the significant changes in the fabrication methods and inspection criteria and techniques which were made in response to the large number of failures that occurred in the early stages of the program. The thoria program has sustained 25 thoria target element failures. Eighteen of these failures are believed to have been caused as a result of water entry through fabrication defects in the closure weld. Two of the failures were attributable to water entry through the cladding as a result of charging machine damage, and the remaining five failures were caused by water entry in some undetermined manner. The majority of thoria element failures occurred in the early stages of the program. Upon determining the cause of failure, Production Fuels Section initiated programs to upgrade the …

Comparison of upstream and downstream river temperatures, 1964--1965 (open access)

Comparison of upstream and downstream river temperatures, 1964--1965

Heat discharged to the Columbia River in reactor cooling water is one of the more important pollutants from Hanford operations. The effect of this heat on river temperatures has been studied for several years, primarily because of the potential effect on the Columbia River fisheries. This document presents a summary of recent river temperature experience, with comparison data for a better perspective.

Outer annulus imbalance study: Mark I fuel (open access)

Outer annulus imbalance study: Mark I fuel

Results of an investigation of fuel element outer annulus enthalpy imbalance are reported and analytical results of suggested methods to limit this imbalance are presented. Also included are comparisons of calculated and experimental enthalpy imbalance ratios along with other quantities. Results indicate that tightening fuel tolerances and clearances can substantially reduce the present outer annulus imbalance thereby increasing power capability. A basic pre-requisite to reduction of clearance between fuel support diameter and process tube diameter is a test establishment of the minimum allowable clearance compatible with charging requirements. Matching fuel elements to process tube diameters will also reduce the imbalance but is in general not feasible at the present time.

Study of applications for Hanford produced cobalt-60 (open access)

Study of applications for Hanford produced cobalt-60

Demands for cobalt-60 have been relatively small as long as the principal application were for radiography and gaging. The accumulated production in the entire United STates is less than ten megacuries, although the Hanford plant is capable of producing about 200 megacuries every year using uranium enriched to 0.95 percent, and greater amounts with higher enrichments. Two new developments brighten the prospects for large-scale utilization of cobalt-60. First is the possible use of cobalt-60 as a heat-producing radioisotope. Although shielding weights make cobalt-60 unattractive for space applications, the general size of thermal applications can be appreciated by noting that 32 meacuries of cobalt-60 would be required to provide the 500 kw of isotopic heat which NASA reports they will need by 1980; terrestrial applications may be an order of magnitude larger. This application of cobalt-60 has been pushed primarily by Savannah River and utilization of high activity cobalt-60 (200-500 curies/gram) as a heat source is being investigated by them under MFC 5.

Measurement of the K{sup 0}{sub S} - K{sup 0}{sub L} mass difference by the time dependence of strangeness (open access)

Measurement of the K{sup 0}{sub S} - K{sup 0}{sub L} mass difference by the time dependence of strangeness

The magnitude of the K{sup 0}{sub S} - K{sup 0}{sub L} mass difference has been measured by monitoring the time dependence of the strangeness of neutral K's produced in hydrogen and deuterium in the LRL 25 '' hydrogen bubble chamber. The particles originate as K-bar{sup 0} in K{sup -} change-exchange scatters at .85 to 1.15 Bev/c; the signature for an S = -1 reaction is the production of a hyperon. Seventy- seven events were found, obtaining {Delta}{omega} = 0.50 =- 0.15, measured in units of inverse K{sup 0}{sub S} lifetime. This and two other recent measurements using the same method are consistent with one another and with measurements of {Delta}{omega} by other means. A combined ''world average'' of nine reasonably consistent measurements gives {Delta}{omega} = 0.60 +- 0.06.
