From abstract: "A previous study of equipment necessary for clean-up following a nuclear accident indicated a need for a portable television system capable of operating in hazardous environments during recovery operations. A system to accomplish this is described and justified in this study."

A double-focusing magnetic field for a spectrometer of the flat type which gives radial focusing to roughly the sixth order, and which utilizes azimuthal variation of the field coefficients, has been devised.

The transverse electromagnetic coupling of bunches of particles with each other is investigated theoretically, and shown to incorporate the possibility (due to the effect of nonperfectly conducting vacuum chamber walls) of coherent instability even when the longitudinal distance between bunches is much larger than the transverse dimensions of the vacuum tank. The modes of oscillation in which the bunches move rigidly are investigated; criteria for stability, and expressions for the small amplitude growth rates under unstable conditions are presented. The case of a single bunch is considered in detail and demonstrated to be stable (even in the absence of landau damping) provided {nu} lies between an integer and the next higher half-integer, where {nu} is the number of transverse free betatron oscillations occurring in one revolution; for many bunches which are sensibly different in intensity (a criterion for this is presented), all modes are stable provided {nu} satisfies the same restriction. For equally spaced bunches of equal numbers of particles, approximately half the modes are unstable without Landau damping. Numerical examples are presented covering some intermediate situations.

ABS>Declassified 29 Aug 1973. Accomplishments on the HHT-4 Cluster Corrosion Test from September 1965 to March 1966 are described. The development of hardware, techniques, and procedures to upgrade the state-of-theart of high temperature corrosion testing of complete clusters is discussed. In addition, testing of support block and components designs in support of NRX-A4 and NRX-A5 designs using the cluster test is reviewed. 5 references. (auth)

Declassified 28 Aug 1973. Optical microscopy of untested and hot-gas- tested Rover unfueled and fueled elements was used to study coating adherence and porosity development. Application of microradiography to the examination of Rover elements was evaluated. Nitridation of Nb carbide was studied briefly. (DLC)

The Hanford Project has over 500 wells which are used for the surveillance of radionuclides in the ground resulting from waste disposal. Wells are located at disposal sites to monitor the migration of radionuclides in the soil and to determine when a disposal facility is to be abandoned. Outside of the immediate disposal areas, wells are sampled to determine the movement of contaminants in the ground water zone. The spread of wastes in unconfined ground water aquifers is followed by routine sampling, and the confined aquifers in the area are sampled frequently where possible. Maps of gross BETA and tritium concentrations in the ground water are presented to define contamination spread from the disposal areas during the last six months of 1965. (auth)
