CORE TRANSFER FUNCTION MODELS FOR SNAP SYSTEM KINETICS (open access)

CORE TRANSFER FUNCTION MODELS FOR SNAP SYSTEM KINETICS

A distributed parameter transfer function is developed for SNAP type reactor cores. The coolant may be either boiling, non-boiling, or both. In the boiling case the Bankoff model is used to find the spatial distribution of voids. The transfer functions obtained are not simple polynomials. However, they are readily analyzed for stabilily using the 7090 program TRAFIC, which uses a Nyquist diagram approach. Some general conclusions resulting from these calculations are included. (auth)

The Inference of Adsorption from Differential Double Layer Capacitance Measurements (open access)

The Inference of Adsorption from Differential Double Layer Capacitance Measurements

From Abstract : "Dependence of boundary tension and capacitance at the mercury-aqueous 0.1 N HClO4 interface on polarization and organic solute concentration were determined for the colutes n-amyl alcohol and phenol. ... An earlier treatment proposed by this Laboratory based on a (non-thermodynamic) assumption of linear variation of surface charge density with coverage appears adequately justified for inference of fractional surface coverages near the electrocapillary maximum, but must be considered approximate for evaluation of molar area at full coverage in cases where linear variation of charge with coverage has not been demonstrated."

The Thermal Expansion of Thirteen Tungsten Carbide Cermets from 68 to 1800 F (open access)

The Thermal Expansion of Thirteen Tungsten Carbide Cermets from 68 to 1800 F

The linear thermal expansion of thirteen tungsten carbide cermets with cobalt binder was investigated experimentally over the temperature range from 68 to 1800 F. Cobalt contents varied from 2.5 to 60 per cent. Several compositions included additions of mixed carbides of titanium, tantalum, and columbium. The experimentally observed coefficients of thermal expansion for the various compositions were compared with coefficients analytically computed from the coefficients for the constituents. Three such analytical methods were evaluated. In one method, the coefficient of expansion of the mixture was computed by volume fractions and in a second method by weight fractions. In the third method, the computation accounted for the stresses set up in the mixture by the difference in thermal expansion of the carbide skeleton and the cobalt binder. The expansions of all these cermets agreed with the values computed by weight fractions or by the stress method within 12 per cent, and by volume fractions within 28 per cent. The cermets containing less than one per cent mixed carbides agreed with the expansion computed either by weight fractions or by stress within 8 per cent, the cermets containing more than five per cent mixed carbides agreed with values computed by volume fractions …

Feasibility and Conceptual Design for the Step Loss of Coolant Facility (open access)

Feasibility and Conceptual Design for the Step Loss of Coolant Facility

A summary of studies conducted on the pressurizedwater reactor loss-of- coolant accident is presented, and an experimental safety program is proposed. The various phenomena involved in the loss-of-coolant accident, related research and development programs, assumptions currently used to predict the various physical phenomena, and the general approach to be used in conducting the safety tests are discussed. In order to accomplish the loss-of-coolant experimental safety program, a dry containment test facility is proposed for construction at the Test Area North of the National Reactor Testing Station in Idaho. The site selection utilizes existing support facilities suited for performing nuclear safety tests requiring experiment assembly areas and post-test analytical examination of the irradiated nuclear components. STEAM GENERATORS FOR HIGH-TEMPERATURE GAS-COOLED REACTORS (open access)

STEAM GENERATORS FOR HIGH-TEMPERATURE GAS-COOLED REACTORS

An analytical approach and an IBM machine code were prepared for the design of gas-cooled reactor once-through steam generators for both axial-flow and cross-flow tube matrices. The codes were applied to investigate the effects of steam generator configuration, tube diameter, extended surface, type of cooling gas, steam and gas temperature and pressure conditions, and the pumping power-to-heat removal ratio on the size, weight, and cost of steam generators. The results indicate that the least expensive and most promising unit for high- temperature high-pressure gascooled reactor plants employs axial-gas flow over 0.5-in.dia bare U-tubes arranged with their axes parallel to that of the shell. The proposed design is readily adaptable to the installation of a reheater and is suited to conventional fabrication techniques. Charts are presented to facilitate tlie design of both axial-flow and cross-flow steam generators for gas- cooled reactor applications. (auth)
