Report presenting a program to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of thin delta wings with symmetrical double-wedge sections in the hypersonic tunnel at a Mach number of 6.9. A family of 5-percent-thick lifting wings with semiapex angles were tested over a range of angles of attack. Results regarding lift and drag characteristics, center of pressure and moment coefficient, Schileren photographs, and surface film flow studies are provided.

Nuclear metallurgy lectures: Chapter 1

The purpose of this course is two-fold. It should serve as a review for the metallurgist of the classical metallurgical concepts applied to such metals as uranium, thorium, plutonium, and zirconium. These metals are relatively unfamiliar to the metallurgist, but the concepts are still the same ones applied to familiar metals. The second purpose is to acquaint the non-metallurgist with the reasons for selection, advantages, and disadvantages of the various fuels and structural materials used in a reactor. Thus, there are two purposes: the first is conceptual, and the second is explanatory. A blending of the two must inevitably result in an over-simplification of the metallurgical concepts and an assumption of certain background material which, actually, may not be available to the non-metallurgist. The present lecture is an introduction to the material to be covered. This lecture will have two purposes. The material to be presented in the remaining lectures will be outlined briefly, and the various concepts to be covered in this course will be discussed.

Tests were made to determine the effects of duct-entrance-fairing plugs on the static lateral and longitudinal stability characteristics of the complete model in the clean condition. The remaining tests were concerned with determining tail contributions as well as the effect of duct-entrance-fairing plugs, slats, flaps, and landing gear on the yawing and pitching stability derivatives" (p. 1).

200 Area processing rates

Two types of ``feedstock,`` i.e. irradiated uranium and uranium from underground storage, are processed by the 200 Areas. Future operations may add irradiated thorium as a supplementary feed material. In either case, the major portion of future feedstocks is presumed to be in the form of irradiated metal, i.e. uranium and/or thorium, resulting in an almost complete dependence of the required 200 Area processing rate on reactor power levels and metal irradiation history. This document presents correlations by which predicted reactor power levels and production commitments for particular types of product may be easily converted to the required separations processing rates. Separations processing rates potentially resulting from low NGS plutonium and ``23`` commitments are given for the period through 1957.

Exponential Pile Measurements with Hollow Slugs in Graphite-Uranium Lattice

Buckling measurements were taken with hollow natural uranium slugs in graphite-moderated lattices, in which the lattice spacing was varied from 6 3/16 to 15 inches in five steps. A 1.66" O.D. slug was used with two different core sizes, 1.11" I.D. and 0.81" I.D. The results of wet (water in the core) and dry measurements are reported. Buckling curves are given showing the effect on the buckling of coring the slug and placing water in the core. Simple three-region diffusion theory is applied to the measured lattices in an effort to correlate measurement with theory, but with only limited success.

"Tests have been conducted in the Langley 8-foot transonic tunnel on a 0.04956-scale model of the Convair F-102A airplane which employed an indented and extended fuselage, cambered wing leading edges, and deflected wing tips. Force and moment characteristics were obtained for Mach numbers from 0.60 to 1.135 at angles of attack up to 20 degrees. In addition, tests were made over a limited angle-of-attack range to determine the effects of the cambered leading edges, deflected tips, and a nose section with a smooth area distribution" (p. 1).

Design and performance of a 1400-foot-per-second-tip-speed supersonic compressor rotor

Report presenting performance testing of a supersonic compressor designed for a tip speed of 1400 feet per second, a pressure ratio of 2.0, and a corrected weight flow of 30.5 pounds per second. The overall performance results of the rotor alone at design speed gave a pressure ratio of 2.17, an adiabatic efficiency of 89 percent, and a weight flow of 28 pounds per second. A comparison with the predicted design results is provided.

An Electrical Technique for Ground Water Velocity Measurement

An electrical conductivity technique was developed to determine the dilution-displacement rate of an electrolyte in a well from which data the velocity of the water through the well can be calculated. The electrical current flow between two of the electrodes in a well drops proportionately with the dilution and the displacement of the electrolyte by fresh water entering the well. The drop of electrical current flow over a period of time was applied to a derived equation to obtain a value for ground water velocity. The technique gives results comparable to other methods and some problems of the standard methods of measuring ground water velocity are eliminated. However, a correction factor for porosity of the aquifier must be used in the derived equation. Porosity values are not adequately known in most cases, therefore the ground water velocity figures are generally relative rather than absolute.
