A Study of Normal Accelerations and Operating Conditions Experienced by Helicopters in Commercial and Military Operations (open access)

A Study of Normal Accelerations and Operating Conditions Experienced by Helicopters in Commercial and Military Operations

Note presenting an analysis of the normal accelerations and operating conditions encountered by two different airmail helicopters and a military pilot-training helicopter. The results indicate that maneuvers are usually responsible for the relatively large accelerations encountered, whereas gusts contribute primarily to the large number of smaller accelerations and the corresponding increase in the amount of time spent in the accelerated state. Results regarding operating conditions, gust and maneuver loads, take-off and climb, en route, landing approach, landing loads, operating variables, and acceleration frequency of occurrence are provided.

Tank investigation of the hydrodynamic characteristics of a 1/13.33-scale jet-powered dynamic model of the Martin XP6M-1 flying boat: TED No. NACA DE 385

A tank investigation was made of the hydrodynamic characteristics of a 1/13.33-scale jet-powered dynamic model of the 160,000-pound Martin XP6M-1 flying boat. Longitudinal stability during take-off and landing, resistance of the complete model, spray characteristics, flap loads, and effect of sinking speed in smooth and rough water are presented, as well as behavior during taxiing, take-off and landing in rough water. The effect on spray of two bows and several bow-spray-strip modifications and the effect on resistance of afterbody chine strips also are presented.

Theory of Reversible and Nonreversible Cracks in Solids (open access)

Theory of Reversible and Nonreversible Cracks in Solids

The Griffith crack theory is reviewed and certain shortcomings of this theory are discussed. A new description for the shape of a crack is given which takes into account the atomic structure of material. Through consideration of the total energy of the system and the shape of the crack, expressions for crack behavior are derived which are considered to remedy the defects of the Griffith theory.

Variation of Local Liquid-Water Concentration About an Ellipsoid of Fineness Ratio 10 Moving in a Droplet Field (open access)

Variation of Local Liquid-Water Concentration About an Ellipsoid of Fineness Ratio 10 Moving in a Droplet Field

From Summary: "Trajectories of water droplets about an ellipsoid of revolution with a fineness ratio of 10 (10 percent thick) in flight through a droplet field were computed with the aid of a differential analyzer. Analyses of these trajectories indicate that the local concentration of liquid water at various points about an ellipsoid varies considerably and under some conditions may be several times the free-stream concentration. Curves of the local concentration factor as a function of spatial position were obtained and are presented in terms of dimensionless parameters that describe flight and atmospheric conditions."
