Determination of the Vapor Pressure of Lanthanum Fluoride

Preliminary experiments have been made to determine the vapor pressure of lanthanum fluoride between 0.001 and 0.1 millimeter of mercury by means of the Knudsen effusion method. A tantalum cell for this purpose is described. Only preliminary results were obtained and they were all in a relatively high pressure region. However, a plot of the vapor pressure against the reciprocal of absolute temperature approximates a straight line such as would be predicted from theoretical considerations.

Economic evaluation of recirculation as a method of pile cooling

Reductions in irradiation costs and increases in production rate have provided a continuing incentive for more efficient operation of the Hanford Piles. These improvements have been obtained by means of higher specific powers, greater water flow rates, and better water utilization. However, the extent of the improvements which can be made in this manner may be limited by such factors as tube and slug corrosion, slug stability, and graphite damage rates at higher operating temperatures. Water purification and pumping costs are also factors to be considered. New slug designs are being developed which may be capable of much higher specific power operation. Higher graphite temperatures may also prove feasible, but the water plant performance limitations for the present single pass cooling systems may prove much more expensive to relieve. The use of recirculating cooling water as a means of attaining higher temperature, higher power operation has received preliminary study. A preliminary economic evaluation of an operating area equipped for recirculation versus single pass cooling is needed to better determine the relative merits of the two cooling methods. This report presents the results of such an evaluation and discusses the direction of future development work in the field of pile cooling.

The models were launched from rifled guns and the time history of the model roll position in free flight was explored. On April 1, a new energy peak of 6.1 Bev was attained with the Bevatron. Scattered particles monitored with a counter telescope in triple coincidence gave approximately 100 counts per beam pulse. April 2s the machine was down to air to allow work on beam monitoring equipment. Test operations resumed April 5. Though the total number of accelerated particles is still small, due to low energy beam losses, some cloud chamber tracks have been observed. Several plates have been exposed for Goldhaber. Stars with up to 29 prongs have been observed. The following consists of a discussion of the administration, operation and some of the experimental techniques evolved in the use of the Cosmotron.

Results regarding the lift characteristics, drag characteristics and lift-drag ratios, stability characteristics, and flow-study pictures are provided.

A new method of calculating neutron distributions in a cylinder which has appreciable absorption is described. Measurements and calculations on the small-source theory treatment of resonance absorption in U-238 are given. Experimental measurements are reported of the bucklings of lattices utilizing hollow uranium slugs. The effects of varying amounts of cooling water in a graphite-uranium lattice have been measured. A detailed mathematical fitting of experimental reactivity data has been started; some initial results are given here. Curves showing the periods of the lattice testing reactor under various conditions have been calculated in connection with a study of the nuclear safety of this reactor. A method for calculating the critical mass and an estimate (4.4 kg of-U-235) thereof is presented. A technique for measuring the conversion efficiency for U-233 production of Hanford-type lattices is being developed. In connection with the study of the temperature coefficient of reactivity, an analysis has been made of the errors in reactivity change estimates produced by errors in cross-section measurements. The dependence of Pu-240 content in product plutonium on the flux level at which irradiation takes place, which is produced by the 23-day half life of Np-239 is worked out in some detail. "Experimental results showing the static longitudinal-stability and control characteristics of a model of a fighter airplane employing a low-aspect-ratio unswept wing and an all-movable horizontal tail are presented. The investigation was made over a Mach number range from 0.60 to 0.90 and from 1.35 to 1.90 at a constant Reynolds number of 2.40 million, based on the wing mean aerodynamic chord. Because of the location of the horizontal tail at the tip of the vertical tail, interference was noted between the vertical tail and the horizontal tail and between the wing and the horizontal tail" (p. 1).

"The operational characteristics of a J57-P1 turbojet engine have been investigated at altitudes between 15,000 and 66,000 feet in the Lewis altitude wind tunnel. Included in this study is a discussion of fuel nozzle coking, the altitude operating limits with and without the standard engine control, the compressor surge characteristics, and the engine starting and windmilling characteristics. Severe circumferential turbine outlet temperature gradients which occurred at high altitude as a result of fuel nozzle coking were alleviated by the manufacturer's change in the fuel flow divider schedule and in a nozzle gasket material" (p. 1).
