Secondary flows and boundary-layer accumulations in turbine nozzles (open access)

Secondary flows and boundary-layer accumulations in turbine nozzles

An investigation of secondary-flow loss patterns originating in three sets of turbine nozzle blade passages was conducted by means of flow-visualization studies and detailed flow measurements. For all cases, high loss values were measured in the fluid downstream of the corners formed by the suction surfaces of the blades and the shrouds, and these losses were accompanied by discharge-angle deviations from design values. Despite the size of the loss regions and angle gradients, over-all mass-average blade efficiencies were of the order of 0.99 and 0.98 and, therefore, are not a good index of blade performance.

Low-Speed Aileron Effectiveness as Determined by Force Tests and Visual-Flow Observations on a 52 Degree Sweptback Wing With and Without Chord-Extensions

The results of an investigation of the effects of leading-edge chord-extensions and extensible leading-edge flaps on the low-speed aileron characteristics of a 52 degrees sweptback wing with circular-arc airfoil sections are presented. A description and illustrations of the vortex flow as it passes over the wing are included. The investigation was conducted at Reynolds numbers of 5.5 times 10(exp 6) and 1.3 times 10(exp 6) and corresponding Mach numbers of 0.11 and 0.065 for an angle-of-attack range of 0 degrees through stall.

Some torsional-damping measurements of laminated beams as applied to the propeller stall-flutter problem (open access)

Some torsional-damping measurements of laminated beams as applied to the propeller stall-flutter problem

The structural damping in the torsion mode of vibration of a series of untwisted, laminated thin beams simulating propeller blades is presented. The number of lamination were varied, as well as the bonding material and the method of joining lamination. Application of the data to the calculation of the minimum flutter speed of thin propeller blades indicates that appreciable gains in the minimum flutter speed may be obtained for laminated blades using a Cycleweld bond.

Accuracy of Relaxation Length Measurements (open access)

Accuracy of Relaxation Length Measurements

We consider here the accuracy of relaxation lengths measured during the water-uranium lattice experiments. Since such an analysis for all measurements would take a great deal of time, we have applied it to just one lattice. This one (2:1 water-to-metal ratio) was chosen completely at random.

A study of the motion and aerodynamic heating of ballistic missiles entering the earth's atmosphere at high supersonic speeds (open access)

A study of the motion and aerodynamic heating of ballistic missiles entering the earth's atmosphere at high supersonic speeds

From Summary: "A simplified analysis of the velocity and deceleration history of ballistic missiles entering the earth's atmosphere at high supersonic speeds is presented. The results of this motion analysis are employed to indicate means available to the designer for minimizing aerodynamic heating. The heating problem considered involves not only the total heat transferred to a missile by convection, but also the maximum average and local time rates of convective heat transfer."

A Transonic Wind-Tunnel Investigation of the Trim and Dynamic Response Characteristics of the Horizontal Tail of a 1/7-Scale Model of the Complete Tail of the Grumman XF10F-1 Airplane

"An investigation was made of the trim and dynamic response characteristics of the free-floating horizontal tail of a 1/7-scale model of the complete tail of the Grumman XF10F-1 airplane in the Langley 8-foot transonic tunnel at Mach numbers up to 1.13. The complete tail was mounted in the tunnel on a 3 degree conical support body. Various configurations were investigated. A loss in damping of the horizontal tail at transonic speeds was shown by both tunnel and flight tests" (p. 1).
