A study of the motion and aerodynamic heating of ballistic missiles entering the earth's atmosphere at high supersonic speeds (open access)

A study of the motion and aerodynamic heating of ballistic missiles entering the earth's atmosphere at high supersonic speeds

From Summary: "A simplified analysis of the velocity and deceleration history of ballistic missiles entering the earth's atmosphere at high supersonic speeds is presented. The results of this motion analysis are employed to indicate means available to the designer for minimizing aerodynamic heating. The heating problem considered involves not only the total heat transferred to a missile by convection, but also the maximum average and local time rates of convective heat transfer."

The Effect of Blade-Section Camber on the Stall-Flutter Characteristics of Three NACA Propellers at Zero Advance (open access)

The Effect of Blade-Section Camber on the Stall-Flutter Characteristics of Three NACA Propellers at Zero Advance

Report presenting an investigation to determine the effect of blade-section camber on the stall-flutter characteristics of three propellers using a 6000-horsepower propeller dynamometer. Up to a certain blade angle, there was an increase in flutter-speed coefficient with an increase in blade-section design lift coefficient. An increase in thrust was found to lead to an increase in tip Mach number in the flutter region of the propeller blades.

Laboratory evaporation of Redox PR solution (open access)

Laboratory evaporation of Redox PR solution

Since Redox start-up, several samples of Redox PR solution have been evaporated in the laboratory as one step in a study of the Redox -- 234 coupling process. Because feed for Task I in 234-5 will be produced by evaporative concentration of Redox and purex product solutions, and because laboratory work has shown the desirability of filtering Redox solutions after such evaporation prior to use in Task I. This report summarizes the observations which have been made in the course of this work, as a guide in the design of filters for the Redox and/or Purex PR cages.

Investigation of Pressure Recovery of a Single-Conical-Shock Nose Inlet at Mach Number 5.4

An experimental investigation of the performance of a single-conical-shock diffuser was conducted at a Mach number of 5.4 and a Reynolds number based on model diameter of 375,000. Total-pressure recoveries of 13.7 and 13.1 percent were obtained at angles of attack of 0 degrees and 3 degrees, respectively. The corresponding kinetic energy efficiencies were 86.4 percent at an angle of attack of 0 degrees and 86.0 percent at an angle of attack of 3 degrees.

Rocket-Model Investigation of the Longitudinal Stability, Drag, and Duct Performance Characteristics of the North American MX-770 (X-10) Missile at Mach Numbers from 0.80 to 1.70 (open access)

Rocket-Model Investigation of the Longitudinal Stability, Drag, and Duct Performance Characteristics of the North American MX-770 (X-10) Missile at Mach Numbers from 0.80 to 1.70

"A free-flight 0.12-scale rocket-boosted model of the North American MX-770 (X-10) missile has been tested in flight by the Pilotless Aircraft Research Division of the Langley Aeronautical Laboratory. Drag, longitudinal stability, and duct performance data were obtained at Mach numbers from 0.8 to 1.7 covering a Reynolds number range of about 9 x 10(exp 6) to 24 x 10(exp 6) based on wing mean aerodynamic chord. The lift-curve slope, static stability, and damping-in-pitch derivatives showed similar variations with Mach number, the parameters increasing from subsonic values in the transonic region and decreasing in the supersonic region" (p. 1).

Effect of Fuel-Air Ratio Concentration in Combustion Zone on Combustion Performance of a 16-Inch Ram-Jet Engine

The results of fuel-air ratio and temperature surveys made in the flame stabilizing zone of a 16-inch ram-jet combustor indicated that the distribution of combustible mixture immediately downstream of a flame holder should be mechanically controlled if a preferred mixture composition is to be maintained in that zone. A sloping-baffle combustor configuration gave combustion efficiencies of 90 percent or greater over a range of fuel-air ratios from 0.010 to 0.045.

Quadrupole Focusing Lenses for Charged Particles (open access)

Quadrupole Focusing Lenses for Charged Particles

A set of four strong focusing magnetic quadrupole lenses has been constructed and operated. Each lens consists of four air cooled electromagnets with pole tips having a hyperbolic cross section. Each lens is 4 in. long and has an aperture 2 in. in diameter. Measurements of the magnetic field demonstrate that the hyperbolic cross section satisfies the requirements of a constant magnetic field gradient very well. The technique of deflecting a current carrying flexible wire has been used to measure the trajectory of charged particles through the system of lenses. It has been observed that the strong focusing requirements are satisfied. The system of lenses was then used to focus 0.5 Mev protons, 20 Mev deuterons, and 40 Mev alpha particles. The parallel beam of 0.5 Mev protons was detected by observing the incandescence of a quartz plate while the protons were bombarding it. The focused beam was less than 1 mm in diameter. The astigmatic 20 Mev deuteron beam from the 60 in. cyclotron was increased in current density by a factor greater than 30.
