Altitude performance and operational characteristics of 29-inch-diameter tail-pipe burner with several fuel systems and fuel-cooled stage-type flame holders on J35-A-5 turbojet engine
An investigation of tail-pipe burning was conducted in the NACA Lewis altitude wind tunnel with a full-scale turbojet engine and an 29-inch-diameter tail-pipe burner. Effects of fuel distribution and number and arrangement of stages on performance and operational characteristics of several fuel-cooled flame holders are presented and discussed. Operation with a three-stage flame holder having the large stage upstream was the most efficient. Combustion efficiency was slightly increased at high altitudes by injecting fuel upstream of the flame holder.

Static Longitudinal Stability of a Tandem-Coupled Bomber-Fighter Airplane Configuration Similar to One Proposed by Douglas Aircraft Company, Inc.
"At the request of the Air Materiel Command, an investigation was made in the Langley free-flight tunnel to determine the longitudinal stability and control characteristics of models coupled together in a tandem configuration for aerial refueling similar to one proposed by the Douglas Aircraft Company, Inc. Static force tests were made with 1/20-scale models of the B-29 and F-80 airplanes to determine the effects of rigidly coupling the airplanes together. The Douglas configuration differs from the rigid configuration tested in that it provides for some freedom in pitch and vertical displacement" (p. 1).

Rough-Water Tests of Models of the Vosper and Plum Planing Boats
Models of two types of high-speed surface craft were tested in Langley tank no. 1 to obtain rough-water data for an evaluation by the David Taylor .Model Basin of the relative merits of the designs. Time-history records were obtained of trim, rise, and normal acceleration at two points in the hulls for various speeds and two sizes of waves.

Theoretical Investigation of the Dynamic Lateral Stability Characteristics of the Douglas X-3 Research Airplane, Study 41-B
Report presenting calculations of the dynamic lateral stability characteristics of a mock-up configuration of the Douglas X-3. The oscillations were found to be stable for all calculations investigated but would not meet the Air Force damping requirements for the majority of the conditions. The use of an autopilot was found to greatly improve oscillation damping.

The New Element Berkelium (Atomic Number 97)
An isotope of the element with atomic number 97 has been discovered as a product of the helium-ion bombardment of americium. This isotope decays with the emission of alpha-particles of maximum energy 6.72 Mev (30 percent) and it emits lower energy alpha-particles of energies 6.55 Mev (53 percent) and 6.20 Mev (17 percent). The half-life of this isotope is 4.6 hours and it decays primarily by electron capture with about 0.1 percent branching decay by alpha-particle emission. The mass number is probably 243 as indicated by chemical separation of the alpha-particle and electron-capture daughters. The name berkelium, symbol Bk, is proposed for element 97. The chemical separation of element 97 from the target material and other reaction products was made by combinations of precipitation and ion exchange adsorption methods making use of its anticipated (III) and (IV) oxidation states and its position as a member of the actinide transition series. The distinctive chemical properties made use of in its separation and the equally distinctive decay properties of the particular isotope constitute the principal evidence for the new element.

Present Status of the Bevatron R. F. System
The general method of controlling the radio frequency for the full scale Bevatron will be the same as that used on the 1/4 scale machine. The details of course will be modified to meet the requirements of greater range, higher output voltage and closer tracking tolerances. In addition, there is the added complication introduced by the current ripple.

The Effect of Spanwise Aileron Location on the Rolling Effectiveness of Wings With 0 Degree and 45 Degree Sweep at Subsonic, Transonic, and Supersonic Speeds
Report discussing an investigation of the effect of spanwise aileron location on the rolling effectiveness of plain faired ailerons on untapered wing plan forms with designated sweep, airfoil sections, and aspect ratio using rocket-propelled test vehicles. Drag data is also presented for all configurations tested. Spanwise aileron location was found to have little effect on the effectiveness of the aileron on an unswept wing plan form.

Maximum-Lift Investigation of a 1/40-Scale X-1 Airplane Wing at Mach Numbers From 0.60 to 1.15
Report presenting an investigation at transonic speeds to determine the maximum lift characteristics of a wing model of the X-1 airplane. Lift, drag, and pitching-moment data for a lift range and range of Mach numbers was collected. Maximum lift was found to be obtained at progressively higher angles of attack as the Mach number was increased.

Wind-tunnel tests of a 0.16-scale model of the X-3 airplane at high subsonic speeds: stability and control characteristics
Report presenting static lateral- and longitudinal-stability tests of a scale model of a projected, low-aspect-ratio, supersonic airplane at low and high subsonic Mach numbers. The wing was equipped with leading-edge flaps and had a modified double-wedge airfoil with sharp leading and trailing edges. Results regarding lift characteristics, static longitudinal stability and control, lateral and directional stability, drag characteristics, and wing and fuselage tuft studies are provided.

Ditching Tests of a 1/18-Scale Model of the Lockheed Constellation Airplane
"Tests were made of a 1/18-scale dynamically similar model of the Lockheed Constellation airplane to investigate its ditching characteristics and proper ditching technique. Scale-strength bottoms were used to reproduce probable damage to the fuselage. The model was landed in calm water at the Langley tank no. 2 monorail. Various landing attitudes, speeds, and fuselage configurations were simulated" (p. 1).

From Summary: "An investigation was made by the NACA wing-flow method to determine the drag, pitching-moment, lift, and angle-of-attack characteristics at transonic speeds of various configurations of a semispan model of an early configuration of the XF7U-1 tailless airplane. The results of the tests indicated that for the basic configuration with undeflected ailavator, the zero-lift drag rise occurred at a Mach number of about 0.85 and that about a five-fold increase in drag occurred through the transonic speed range. The results of the tests also indicated that the drag increment produced by -8.0 degrees deflection of the ailavator increased with increase in normal-force coefficient and was smaller at speeds above than at speeds below the drag rise."
