Inspection and replacement of Van Stone flanges, B, D, and F piles (open access)

Inspection and replacement of Van Stone flanges, B, D, and F piles

Routine inspections of selected Van Stone flanges have been made at all three piles since start-up. In September, 1947, these inspections indicated that corrosion effects were becoming dangerously severe. Some of the flanges appeared to be corroied and pitted to a depth of two-thirds of the original flange thickness. To determine the extent and severity of the corrosion, residual flange thickness measurements were made on the flanges of about 64 scattered tubes. Included were front and rear flanges of tubes from all four orifice zones. Results of the survey indicated the immediate need for an extensive repair program to preclude the possibility of failure of some of the flanges.

Production of Mesons by the 184-inch Berkeley Cyclotron Part I. Experimental Arrangement (open access)

Production of Mesons by the 184-inch Berkeley Cyclotron Part I. Experimental Arrangement

The authors have observed traks which they believe to be due to mesons in photographic plates placed near a ta5rget bombarded by 380 Mev alpha particles. The plates used were Ilford Nuclear Research Plates, type C.2. the identification of the particles responsible for the tracks was first made on the basis of the appearance of the tracks; they show the same type of scattering and variation of grain density with residual range found in cosmic ray meson tracks and about two-thirds of them produce observable stars at the end of their range. For a 10-minute exposure in the cyclotron, about 50 meson tracks are found along the 3-inch edge of a photographic plate. Carbon, beryllium, copper, and uranium have been used so far as target materials, and all are found to give mesons. When a carbon target was bombarded with 300 Mev alpha particles, mesons were found but with reduced yield.

Investigation of the Flying Mock-Up of Consolidated Vultee XP-92 Airplane in the Ames 40- by 80-Foot Wind Tunnel: Pressure Distributions

This report contains the results of the wind tunnel investigation of the pressure distribution on the flying mock-up of the Consolidated Vultee XP-92 airplane. Data are presented for the pressure distribution over the wing, vertical tail and the fuselage, and for the pressure loss and rate of flow through the ducted fuselage. Data are also presented for the calibration of two airspeed indicators, and for the calibration of angle-of-attack and sideslip-angle indicator vanes.

[Memorandums on the Subject of Wind Tunnel Measurements of the Henschel Missile "Zitterrochen"]

"At the request of the Henschel Aircraft Works. A. G. Berlin. three models of the missile "Zitterrochen" were investigated at subsonic velocities.(open jet 215-millimeter diameter) and at supersonic velocities (open jet 110 by 130 millimeters) in order to determine the effect of various wing forms on the air forces and moments. Three-component measurements were taken, and one model was also investigated with deflected control plates" (p. 1).

Planing of Watercraft (open access)

Planing of Watercraft

The present report deals with the processes accompanying the planing of a planing boat or a seaplane on water. The study is largely based upon theoretical investigations; mathematical problems and proofs are not discussed. To analyze theoretical actual planing processes, giving due consideration to all aspects of the problem, is probably not possible. The theories therefore treat various simple limiting cases, which in their entirety give a picture of the planing processes and enable the interpretation of the experimental results.

The Influence of the Diameter Ratio on the Characteristics Diagram of the Axial Compressor (open access)

The Influence of the Diameter Ratio on the Characteristics Diagram of the Axial Compressor

With the further development of axial blowers into highly loaded flow machines, the influence of the diameter ratio upon air output and efficiency gains in significance. Clarification of this matter is important for single-stage axial compressors, and is of still greater importance for multistage ones, and particularly for aircraft power plants. Tests with a single-stage axial blower gave a decrease in the attainable maximum pressure coefficient and optimum efficiency as the diameter ratio increased. The decrease must be ascribed chiefly to the guide surface of the hub and housing between the blades increasing with the diameter ratio.

Theoretical Analysis of Stationary Potential Flows and Boundary Layers at High Speed

"The present report consists of two parts. The first part deals with the two-dimensional stationary flow in the presence of local supersonic zones. A numerical method of integration of the equation of gas dynamics is developed. Proceeding from solutions at great distance from the body the flow pattern is calculated step by step" (p. 1).
