A Theoretical Investigation of Hydrodynamic Impact Loads on Scalloped-Bottom Seaplanes and Comparisons With Experiment (open access)

A Theoretical Investigation of Hydrodynamic Impact Loads on Scalloped-Bottom Seaplanes and Comparisons With Experiment

"An analytical method is presented for calculating the hydrodynamic impact loads and motions experienced by seaplane floats and hulls with scalloped (fluted) bottoms. The analysis treats vertical impact at zero trim in addition to the more general problem of the step impact of a seaplane at positive trim where the flight path is oblique to the keel and to the water surface. Also considered are the transformations required to represent impacts into waves" (p. 109).

Uranium Peroxide (open access)

Uranium Peroxide

It was desired to investigate the precipitation of UO{sub 4} in acid solution, in order to determine the suitability of this reaction for use in the purification of uranium. A series of tests was performed to establish the conditions for precipitation of UO{sub 4}. It was found that uranium could be completely precipitated from pure uranyl sulfate solution at a pH of 2.5 to 3.5, with only silght excess of H{sub 2}O{sub 2}. The presence of sodium sulfate interferred with complete precipitation. It was established that vanadium was preferentially oxidized, when present.

Velocity Analyzer (open access)

Velocity Analyzer

Description of a velocity analyzer (with diagrams) is given. It is a device for measuring the velocities of charged particles which comprises pairs of spaced electrodes, a collector for charged particles, and means for propelling charged particles in a direction so as to pass between the pairs of electrodes. The pairs of electrodes and the collector are so arranged to permit passage of the charged particles between them to the collector plate. Means are provided for applying an alternating substantially square wave potential of known frequency to the pairs of electrodes so that adjacent pairs are opposite in phase and so that one half-cycle of the wave appears as zero potential between the pairs of electrodes.

Velocity distributions on two-dimensional wing-duct inlets by conformal mapping (open access)

Velocity distributions on two-dimensional wing-duct inlets by conformal mapping

The conformal-mapping method of the Cartesian mapping function is applied to the determination of the velocity distribution on arbitrary two-dimensional duct-inlet shapes such as are used in wing installations. An idealized form of the actual wing-duct inlet is analyzed. The effects of leading edge stagger, inlet-velocity ratio, and section lift coefficients on the velocity distribution are included in the analysis. Numerical examples are given and, in part, compared with experimental data.

Vibration Survey of Blades in 19XB Axial-Flow Compressor 2: Dynamic Investigation (open access)

Vibration Survey of Blades in 19XB Axial-Flow Compressor 2: Dynamic Investigation

"Strain-gage measurements were taken under operating conditions from blades of various stages of the 19XB axial-flow compressor in an effort to determine the reason for failures in the seventh and tenth stages. First bending-mode vibrations were detected in the first five stages of the compressor caused by each integral multiple of rotor speed from three through ten. Lead-wire failures in the last five stages resulted in incomplete data" (p. 1).

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of Air Loads Over a Double Slotted Flap on the NACA 65(216)-215, a = 0.8 Airfoil Section (open access)

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of Air Loads Over a Double Slotted Flap on the NACA 65(216)-215, a = 0.8 Airfoil Section

Report presenting an investigation at low speed and high Reynolds number to determine the air loads over a double slotted flap on the NACA 65(216)-215, a = 0.8 airfoil section. Results indicated that the loads on the flap change slowly with variation of angle of attack but quickly with the flap deflected. The main effect of the double-slotted flap is that it causes the airfoil to carry a greater load without stalling.
