Effects of Alterations to Low Gradient Reaches of Utah Streams

This report describes an investigation of the effects of stream channelization on fish and macro-invertebrates in low gradient reaches of Blacksmith Fork River and the Logan River in the floodplain of Cache Valley in northern Utah. Channelization adversely affected both fish and macro-invertebrate populations and biomass, with the severity of impact directly related to the amount and duration of disturbance of the physical habitat.

Geology of the Raint Day Uranium Mine Garfield County, Utah (open access)

Geology of the Raint Day Uranium Mine Garfield County, Utah

From abstract: The Rainy Day mine in the Circle Cliffs area, Utah, is developed Dn a long slender pod of uranium ore. Ore is localized in siltstone of the Moenkopi formation of Triassic age, on the south edge of a channel about 3,300 feet wide by 40 feet deep that is filled with sandstone of the Shinarump member of the Chinle formation of Triassic age. Shale of the Chinle rests directly on siltstone of the Moenkopi on either side of the channel.

Tectonic Map of Northern Colorado and Northeastern Utah, Showing the Distribution of Uranium Deposits

From introduction: The compilation of the tectonic map of northern Colorado and northeastern Utah (area h, fig. 2) was done by the U. S. Geological Survey on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. Structures shown on the map have been obtained from published geologic maps, and from unpublished data supplied by government agencies, private companies, and independent geologists. The various structures of the Foreland can be divided into three large classes to show the relation of uranium deposits to the structural pattern.

Geology and Drilling Recommendations Oak Spring Area Apache County, Arizona, and San Juan County, New Mexico

Abstract: Uranium ore deposits on two exposed rims and past production records of tonnage and grade indicate an exploration program is justified in the Oak Springs area. A minimum of 24,000 feet of core drilling is recommended with a maximum of 75,000 feet to be based on favorability as determined by subsurface studies.

Memorandum Listing the Areas in Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico that are Geologically Favorable for Developing Large Reserves of Vanadium Ore by Prospecting (open access)

Memorandum Listing the Areas in Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico that are Geologically Favorable for Developing Large Reserves of Vanadium Ore by Prospecting

Introduction: Vanadium ore is being mined at many places in western Colorado, southeastern Utah, northeastern Arizona, and northwestern New Mexico (fig. 1). Eight mills in this region produced about 4,300,000 pounds of V2 05 in 1942, representing about 90 percent of the vanadium obtained from domestic sources. Although ore production has mostly exceeded mill capacity since 1937, production during the last half of 1942 averaged only about 19,000 tons or ore a month, whereas the capacity of these mills total about 22,000 tons a month. At the expected rate of ore production, ore stockpiles will be exhausted sometime in 1944, and these mills will then have excess capacity. With more intensive prospecting than now practiced, however, it is believed that sufficient reserves can be indicated to sustain capacity operation of these mills for several years. This memorandum is prepared to specify those areas that are considered most favorable from a geologic standpoint for developing large reserves of vanadium ore by prospecting. It is based on intensive studies by the Geological Survey since 1939 in most of the areas that produce vanadium ore.

UMTRA Project Water Sampling and Analysis Plan, Mexican Hat, Utah (open access)

UMTRA Project Water Sampling and Analysis Plan, Mexican Hat, Utah

The Mexican Hat, Utah, Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Project site is a former uranium mill that is undergoing surface remediation in the form of on-site tailings stabilization. Contaminated surface materials from the Monument Valley, Arizona, UMTRA Project site have been transported to the Mexican Hat site and are being consolidated with the Mexican Hat tailings. The scheduled completion of the tailings disposal cell is August 1995. Water is found in two geologic units at the site: the Halgaito Shale Formation and the Honaker Trail Formation. The tailings rest on the Halgaito Shale, and water contained in that unit is a result of milling activities and, to a lesser extent, water released from the tailings from compaction during remedial action construction of the disposal cell. Water in the Halgaito Shale flows through fractures and discharges at seeps along nearby arroyos. Flow from the seeps will diminish as water drains from the unit. Ground water in the lower unit, the Honaker Trail Formation, is protected from contamination by an upward hydraulic gradient. There are no nearby water supply wells because of widespread poor background ground water quality and quantity, and the San Juan River shows no impacts from the site. …
