One airfoil had a symmetrical circular-arc section and one had a symmetrical double-wedge section. The primary difference in the drag characteristics of the two airfoils at zero lift is the earlier drag rise of the double-wedge section.

Drag Measurements of a Swept-Back Wing Having Inverse Taper as Determined by Flight Tests at Supersonic Speeds

Report discussing the results of flight tests to determine the drag at zero lift of a swept-back wing of inverse taper using an NACA 65-009 airfoil. The data was compared to untapered wings with a similar degree of sweepback. The tapered wing was found to have a lower drag coefficient than the 34-degree swept-back untapered wing but a higher drag coefficient than the 45-degree swept-back untapered wing.

Effects of sweep and thickness on the static longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics of a series of thin, low-aspect-ratio, highly tapered wings at transonic speeds: transonic-bump method

An investigation by the transonic-bump technique of the static longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics of a series of thin, low-aspect-ratio, highly tapered wings has been made in the Langley high-speed 7- by 10-foot tunnel. The Mach number range extended from about 0.60 to 1.18, with corresponding Reynolds numbers ranging from about 0.75 x 10(6) to 0.95 x 10(6). The angle of attack range was from -10 degrees to approximately 32 degrees.

A series of air-stream surveys were made n the vicinity of the empennage of a 1/8.33-scale powered model of the XF-12 airplane in the Langley 19-foot pressure tunnel. Surveys of the vortical-tail region were made through a range of yaw angles of plus or minus 20 degrees at a high and low angle of attack" (p. 1).

Free-Flight-Tunnel Investigation of the Dynamic Stability and Control Characteristics of a Chance Vought F7U-3 Airplane in Towed Flight

"As part of a program to determine the feasibility of using a fighter airplane as a parasite in combination with a Consolidated Vultee RB-36 for long-range reconnaissance missions (project FICON), an experimental investigation has been made in the Langley free-flight tunnel to determine the dynamic stability and control characteristics of a 1/17.5-scale model of a Chance Vought F7U-3 airplane in several tow configurations. The investigation consisted of flight tests in which the model was towed from a strut in the tunnel by a towline and by a direct coupling which provided complete angular freedom. The tests with the direct coupling also included a study of the effect of spring restraint in roll in order to simulate approximately the proposed full-scale arrangement in which the only freedom is that permitted by the flexibility of the launching and retrieving trapeze carried by the-bomber" (p. 1).

Report presenting free-fall testing of the airplane configuration described in the title to evaluate certain new testing techniques for near sonic speeds. Results regarding the drag measurements and pressure data are provided. The data obtained from this test is also compared to free-fall tests in the high-speed tunnel and for a rocket-powered free-flight model, and the results show generally satisfactory agreement.

The results of the investigation indicate that the inboard spoilers located at the rearward chordwise station produce the highest rolling-moment effectiveness.

An analysis of the experimental error and reproducibility of values of apparent viscosity, sedimentation ratio, and redispersibility of the slurries was also made.
