Comparison of flight performance of AN-F-58 and AN-F-32 fuels in J35 turbojet engine (open access)

Comparison of flight performance of AN-F-58 and AN-F-32 fuels in J35 turbojet engine

Report presenting a flight investigation to determine the comparative performance of AN-F-58 and AN-F-32 fuels in a 4000-pound-thrust turbojet engine. The fuels were equivalent over the range of conditions investigated. Results regarding corrected net thrust, corrected jet-fuel consumption, variation of corrected tail-pipe temperature, combustor blow-out speeds, and visual observations of the jet exhaust are provided.

Spectral Lines of Curium from 3100 A to 4200 A (open access)

Spectral Lines of Curium from 3100 A to 4200 A

Fifty-four spectral lines of curium are listed together with estimated intensities. A brief description of the manner of taking the spectra and of measuring the lines is given. Three separate samples of curium, in all seven micrograms, were submitted for spectrochemical analysis. The samples in acidic solution (HCl) were evaporated on copper electrodes and analyzed as outlined for the copper spark method. An Applied Research Laboratories spark source was used. The spectra were taken on a Baird Associates spectrograph of the modified Eagle type which has a dispersion of 5.6 A/mm in the first order. Spectrum Analysis photographic plates were used and were processed according to the manufacturer's recommendations. The plates were placed in the projection comparator (also an Applied Research Laboratories Unit) and the lines measured using the scale associated with the projection screen. The copper lines of the spectra were used as a wavelength standard. In all 54 lines which we feel can be attributed to curium were found. These, together with an estimated intensity based on an arbitrary 1 to 10 scale, are listed in Table 1. Due to the high alpha-activity of curium special care had to be exercised in handling the samples. In this case …

Effect of Number of Fins on the Drag of a Pointed Body of Revolution at Low Supersonic Velocities (open access)

Effect of Number of Fins on the Drag of a Pointed Body of Revolution at Low Supersonic Velocities

Report presenting the results of flight tests conducted to determine the effect of number of fins on the drag of a pointed body moving at low supersonic velocities. The data indicated that the interference drag increased with increased number of ins up to a Mach number of 1.35, but above that value, the effect is reversed to the end of the test Mach number.

Formulas for propellers in yaw and charts of the side-force derivative (open access)

Formulas for propellers in yaw and charts of the side-force derivative

General formulas are given for propellers for the rate of change of side-force coefficient with angle of yaw and for the rate of change of pitching-moment coefficient with angle of yaw. Charts of the side-force derivative are given for two propellers of different plan form. The charts cover solidities of two to six blades and single and dual rotation. The blade angle ranges from 15 degrees or 20 degrees to 60 degrees.
