Fluid dynamics of double diffusive systems

The major accomplishments of our initial research period (August 1, 1987, to March 1, 1990) are as follows; we completed construction of the experimental facility. Originally, it had been our intent to modify an existing facility in our laboratory. When this became impractical we constructed a new stand-alone facility. Modified an existing three-dimensional numerical code developed in our laboratory, SEAFLOS1, by incorporating a salinity transport equation. Developed experimental and analytical techniques, and performed both physical and numerical experiments for a wide range of initial and boundary conditions. Focused our overall research effort to answer the following four questions pertaining to the formation of convective intrusions due to lateral temperature gradients established by sidewall heating. (1) What is the internal structure of the convective intrusions as a function of the initial stratification and sidewall heating rates (2) What is the correct scaling for the initial vertical dimension of the intrusions (3) How does the merging process vary as a function of initial stratification and sidewall heating rate (4) Is the sidewall heating critical for continued propagation of the intrusions, or is it merely a trigger which releases the internal instability in the fluid

Modeling and optimization of a test-cell upgrade for MFTF-B operating in the high neutron wall loading mode

Models of the plasma particle and power balances in a tandem mirror with a high-field test-cell insert in the central cell have been used to calculate operating points for test-cell upgrades of the MFTF-B configuration. The code results have been benchmarked against the proposal plasma parameters for the MFTF-..cap alpha..+T configuration operating in the high neutron wall loading mode. Some parametric studies have been done. Using the results from these parametrics an optimized set of operating parameters for an MFTF-..cap alpha..+T-like configuration with a test-cell which will accommodate two 1.5 m long blanket test modules has been generated. This operating point has the same test-cell neutron wall loading as the original configuration and lower input powers to other systems in the device. The neutral beam power per unit blanket module length is also somewhat reduced in the optimized case.

Experimental study of the dynamic viscosity of some anhydrous silicate melts to 1953 K at 150 kPa. [Alluvium]

The dynamic viscosity was measured for six anhydrous silicate melts, obtained by fusing various rocks collected from the Department of Energy's Nevada Test Site, from 1393 to 1953 K at 150 kPa. These silicate melts exhibit Newtonian behavior in this temperature interval. Experimental results indicate that tuff viscosity > alluvium viscosity > basalt viscosity. At 1673 K, viscosities of Schooner tuff (Ue20..mu..-330'), alluvium (U10ba), and Danny Boy basalt (Ue18q No. 2) are 28,460 Pa.s, 4,820 Pa.s, and 12.6 Pa.s, respectively. Activation energies for viscous flow in the interval between 1393 and 1953 K range from 268 to 393 kJ/mole.

Modeling and optimization of operating parameters for a test-cell option of the Fusion Power Demonstration-II tandem mirror design

Models of tandem mirror devices operated with a test-cell insert have been used to calculate operating parameters for FPD-II+T, an upgrade of the Fusion Power Demonstration-II device. Two test-cell configurations were considered, one accommodating two 1.5 m blanket test modules and the other having four. To minimize the cost of the upgrade, FPD-II+T utilizes the same coil arrangement and machine dimensions outside of the test cell as FPD-II, and the requirements on the end cell systems have been held near or below those for FPD-II. The maximum achievable test cell wall loading found for the short test-cell was 3.5 MW/m/sup 2/ while 6.0 MW/m/sup 2/ was obtainable in the long test-cell configuration. The most severe limitation on the achievable wall loading is the upper limit on test-cell beta set by MHD stability calculations. Modification of the shape of the magnetic field in the test-cell by improving the magnet design could raise this beta limit and lead to improved test-cell performance.

Terrain-Responsive Atmospheric Code (TRAC) for plume growth and dispersion in complex terrain

Use of atmospheric dispersion models to assess pollutant impacts in complex terrain is increasing. However, the temporally and spatially varying wind and turbulence fields in mountainous areas often invalidate the assumptions of straight-line flow and horizontal homogeneity inherent in standard plume models. A dispersion model was recently developed at the Rocky Flats Plant to realistically simulate dispersion processes in complex terrain. The new model treats pollutant releases as a series of overlapping ellipsoidal puffs. The ends of each puff axis are defined by ''tracer'' particles, which are independently advected through the modeled windfield. The puff axes are not, in general, orthogonal. Thus, a puff can develop an arbitrary shape in response to differential diffusion rates, horizontal convergence and divergence, vertical shear, surface reflection, and gravitational settling. The model includes modules for puff transport, diffusion, wet and dry deposition, resuspension, surface roughness effects, ingrowth, decay, and external and internal dosimetry. This report focuses on the simulation of puff growth and shape.

Site suitability criteria for solidified high level waste repositories

The NRC is developing a framework of regulations, criteria, and standards. Lawrence Livermore Laboratory provides broad technical support to the NRC for developing this regulatory framework, part of which involves site suitability criteria for solidified high-level wastes (SHLW). Both the regulatory framework and the technical base on which it rests have evolved in time. This document is the second report of the technical support project. It was issued as a draft working paper for a programmatic review held at LLL from August 16 to 18, 1977. It was printed and distributed solely as a briefing document on preliminary methodology and initial findings for the purpose of critical review by those in attendance. These briefing documents are being reprinted now in their original formats as UCID-series reports for the sake of the historical record. Analysis results have evolved as both the models and data base have changed. As a result, the methodology, models, and data base in this document are severely outmoded.

Studies of the mirrortron ion accelerator concept and its application to heavy-ion drivers

The Mirrortron accelerator is a plasma-based ion accelerator concept that, when implemented, should permit both higher acceleration gradients and higher peak-current capabilities than is possible with conventional induction-type accelerators. Control over the acceleration and focussing of an accelerated beam should approach that achieved in vacuum-field-based ion accelerators. In the Mirrortron a low density (10{sup 10} to 10{sup 11} cm{sup {minus}3}) hot electron'' plasma is confined by a long solenoidal magnetic field capped by mirrors''. Acceleration of prebunched ions is accomplished by activating a series of fast-pulsed mirror coils spaced along the acceleration tube. The hot electrons, being repelled by mirror action, leave the plasma ions behind to create a localized region of high electrical gradient (up to of order 100 MV/m). At the Laboratory an experiment and analyses to elucidate the concept and its scaling laws as applied to heavy-ion drivers are underway and will be described. 4 refs., 5 figs.

Plasma engineering for MINIMARS: a small commercial tandem mirror reactor with octopole plugs

With the employment of a novel octopole end plug scheme, we examine the plasma engineering design of MINIMARS, a small compact fusion reactor based on the tandem mirror principle. With a net electric output of 600 MW/sub e/, MINIMARS is expressly designed for short construction times, factory built modules, and a passively safe blanket system. We show that the compact octopole/mantle provides several distinct improvements over the more conventional quadrupole (yin-yang) end plugs and enables ignition to be obtained with much shorter central cell length. In this way we can design economic small reactors which will minimize utility financial risk and provide attractive alternatives to the conventional larger fusion plants encountered to date.

This report summarizes the measurements made for radioactive contamination in the environs of the Hanford Works for the quarter April through June 1949. This belated document is issued for the records to fill in the gap for the quarterly reports not issued in 1949 because of personnel shortage at that time. Although the data summarized in this report were already reported in the H. I. Evirons Reports for the months involved, it is still of value to study the data combining the three months of data which give better opportunity to evaluate the trends and patterns of the levels of radioactive contamination emanating from the various sources at the Hanford Works. This document discusses: meteorological data and radioactive contamination in vegetation, the atmosphere, rain, Hanford wastes, the Columbia River, and in drinking water and test wells.

Reversed-field pinch studies in the Madison Symmetric Torus

Studies of large-size (R = 1.5 m, a = 0.5 m), moderate current (I < 750 kA) reversed-field pinch (RFP) plasmas are carried out in the Madison Symmetric Torus in order to evaluate and improve RFP confinement, study general toroidal plasma MHD issues, determine the mechanism of the RFP dynamo, and measure fluctuation-induced transport and anomalous ion heating. MST confinement has been improved by reduction of magnetic field errors with correction coils in the primary circuit and reduction of impurities using boronization; high densities have been achieved with hydrogen pellet injection. MHD tearing modes with poloidal mode number m = 1 and toroidal mode numbers n = 5--7 are prevalent and nonlinearly couple to produce sudden relaxations akin to tokamak sawteeth. Edge fluctuation-induced transport has been measured with a variety of insertable probes. Ions exhibit anomalous heating, with increases of ion temperature occuring during strong MHD relaxation. The RFP dynamo has been studied with attention to various possible mechanisms, including motion-EMF drive, the Hall effect, and superthermal electrons. Initial profile control experiments have begun using insertable biased probes and plasma guns. The toroidal field capacity of MST will be upgraded during Summer, 1993 to allow low-current tokamak operation as well …

MGA (Multi-Group Analysis): A Gamma-Ray Spectrum Analysis Code for Determining Plutonium Isotopic Abundances

Nondestructive measurements of x-ray and gamma-ray emissions can be used to analyze a sample for plutonium. This report describes the methods and algorithms we have developed for analyzing gamma-ray spectra obtained by using a germanium detector system to accurately determine the relative abundances of various actinide isotopes in a sample. Our methodology requires no calibrations and can be used to measure virtually any size and type of plutonium sample. Measurement times can be as short as a few minutes; measurements are frequently accurate to within 1%. Our methods have been programmed into a computerized analysis code called MGA (Multi-Group Analysis). Our current versions can be run on personal computers (IBM type) and on the DEC VAX microcomputer. Spectral analysis times are usually far less than a minute. 28 refs., 26 figs., 1 tab.
