Antineutrino interactions in the deuterium filled 15 foot bubble chamber (open access)

Antineutrino interactions in the deuterium filled 15 foot bubble chamber

It is proposed to study the interactions of antineutrinos in deuterium. The initial request is for 300,000 pictures out of a total of one million pictures using the two-horn broad band system with 10{sup 13} protons (300 GeV) per pulse. We plan to use the external muon identifier. The physics motivation includes the following: (1) Search for charmed mesons. (2) Study of elastic and inelastic hyperon production. Only in anti-neutrino interactions can we study the {Delta}S = 1 charged current in quasi two-body interactions at energies and momentum transfers higher than that available in decays. (3) Study of the quasi elastic and pion production reactions. These data will be combined with the {nu}p data of our experiment (E-31). (4) Inclusive study of charged current interactions off neutrons and protons. (5) We will study the structure of the neutral current interaction. We will check the absence of {Delta}S = 1 neutral currents. (6) We will also look for di-muon events using the EMI. (7) We are interested in the possibility of inserting a three-radiation length metal plate in the bubble chamber to serve as a gamma converter and an electron detector.

Assessment of solar-powered cooling of buildings. Final report (open access)

Assessment of solar-powered cooling of buildings. Final report

Three solar-powered cooling concepts are analyzed and evaluated. These are: (1) the solar Rankine concept in which a Rankine cycle driven by solar energy is used to drive a vapor compression refrigeration machine, (2) the solar-assisted Rankine concept in which a Rankine cycle driven by both solar energy and fuel combustion is used to drive a vapor compression refrigeration machine, and (3) the solar absorption concept in which solar energy is used to drive an absorption refrigeration machine. These concepts are compared on the bases of coefficient of performance, requirements for primary fuel input, and economic considerations. Conclusions and recommendations are presented. (WHK)

BEAM-CAVITY INTERACTION IN ELECTRON STORAGE RINGS (open access)

BEAM-CAVITY INTERACTION IN ELECTRON STORAGE RINGS

A formal expression is obtained for the energy loss per turn, of a rigid bunch of electrons, to a closed cylindrical cavity with quality factor Q. The expression is valid provided the diameter of the entrance and exit ports for the beam are small compared to the bunch length. The effect of the ports is studied in an independent computational method. The energy loss is numerically evaluated for a range of parameters of interest to electron storage rings.

Biological baseline data Youngs Bay, Oregon, 1974 (open access)

Biological baseline data Youngs Bay, Oregon, 1974

This report presents biological baseline information gathered during the research project, Physical, Chemical and Biological Studies on Youngs Bay.'' Youngs Bay is a shallow embayment located on the south shore of the Columbia River, near Astoria, Oregon. Research on Youngs Bay was motivated by the proposed construction by Alumax Pacific Aluminum Corporation of an aluminum reduction plant at Warrenton, Oregon. The research was designed to provide biological baseline information on Youngs Bay in anticipation of potential harmful effects from plant effluents. The information collected concerns the kinds of animals found in the Youngs Bay area, and their distribution and seasonal patterns of abundance. In addition, information was collected on the feeding habits of selected fish species, and on the life history and behavioral characteristics of the most abundant benthic amphipod, Corophium salmonis. Sampling was conducted at approximately three-week intervals, using commonly accepted methods of animal collection. Relatively few stations were sampled for fish, because of the need to standardize conditions of capture. Data on fish capture are reported in terms of catch-per-unit effort by a particular sampling gear at a specific station. Methods used in sampling invertebrates were generally more quantitative, and allowed sampling at a greater variety of places, …

Biological effects data: Fluoride and sulfur dioxide (open access)

Biological effects data: Fluoride and sulfur dioxide

The Alumax Pacific Aluminum Corporation has proposed construction of an aluminum reduction facility near Youngs Bay at Warrenton, Oregon. This report comprises one part of the final report to Alumax on a research project entitled, Physical, Chemical and Biological Studies of Youngs Bay.'' It presents data pertaining to the potential biological effects of fluoride and sulfur dioxide, two potentially hazardous plant-stack emissions, on selected aquatic species of the area. Companion volumes provide a description of the physical characteristics the geochemistry, and the aquatic animals present in Youngs Bay and adjacent ecosystems. An introductory volume provides general information and maps of the area, and summarizes the conclusions of all four studies. The data from the two phases of the experimental program are included in this report: lethal studies on the effects of selected levels of fluoride and sulfur dioxide on the survival rate of eleven Youngs Bay faunal species from four phyla, and sublethal studies on the effects of fluoride and sulfur dioxide on the rate of primary production of phytoplankton. 44 refs., 18 figs., 38 tabs.

Diets of black-tailed hares on the Hanford Reservation

A fecal pellet analyses showed that black-tailed hares (jackrabbits) were selective in plants chosen as food. The most abundant herbaceous plant, cheatgrass, was not found in the pellets. Sagebrush and bitterbrush, woody plants, were not an important part of the hares' diet. Forbs, rabbitbrush, and certain grass species were preferred foods. (auth)
