Preliminary Report on the Results of Geobotanical Prospecting on the South Flank of Haystack Butte, McKinley County, New Mexico (open access)

Preliminary Report on the Results of Geobotanical Prospecting on the South Flank of Haystack Butte, McKinley County, New Mexico

Abstract: The absorber plant method of geobotanical prospecting was tested systematically over the bench formed by the Jurassic Todilto limestone on the south flank of Haystack Butte, McKinley County, N. Mex. This portion of the bench includes the largest known uranium ore body in limestone and most has been extensively drilled by private enterprise. Geobotanical prospecting was accomplished to provide control data. Comparison of the geobotanical anomalies with the available drill hole information from the mining companies and Atomic Energy Commission geologists have shown that the known ore occurrences would have been outlined by the results of the tree sampling. In addition some geobotanical anomalies are indicated in drilled areas in which ore was not reported and in areas not physically explored at the time of sampling. These anomalies may represent mineralized ground below ore grade or new ore deposits.

Preliminary Report on the Mineral Hill Monazite Deposits, Lemhi County, Idaho

From abstract: The Mineral Hill monazite deposits, 3 to 5 miles northeast of the town of Shoup, Lemhi County, Idaho, were investigated by the U. S. Geological Survey in July 1952. The deposits are replacement veins and lenses along shears in a pendant, principally of pre-Cambrian biotite gniess, about 4 to 5 miles in size and enclosed by granite of the Idaho batholith. The veins consist predominantly of calcite, monazite, and allanite, and contain minor quantities of barite, magnetite, rutile, and apatite.

Resonance Absorption of Thorium

Abstract: Cadmium ratios for very thin (neutron and beta-wise) foils of thorium, gold, vanadium and indium have been measured in the glory hole of the WBNS. These cadmium ratios, together with the known thermal cross sections and a given calculated resonance integral for gold, were used to evaluare the resonance integrals of thorium, vanadium, and indium.

Estimation of Hydrodynamic Impact Loads and Pressure Distributions on Bodies Approximating Elliptical Cylinders With Special Reference to Water Landings of Helicopters (open access)

Estimation of Hydrodynamic Impact Loads and Pressure Distributions on Bodies Approximating Elliptical Cylinders With Special Reference to Water Landings of Helicopters

"An approximate method for computing water loads and pressure distributions on lightly loaded elliptical cylinders during oblique water impacts is presented. The method is of special interest for the case of emergency water landings of helicopters. This method makes use of theory developed and checked for landing impacts of seaplanes having bottom cross sections of V and scalloped contours. An illustrative example is given to show typical results obtained from the use of the proposed method of computation" (p. 1).

Presents zero-lift drag data of an NACA RM-10 slender body of revolution with and without stabilizing fins attached. The results from several wind tunnels and in flight are compared. The results cover a Reynolds number range from about 1 time 10 to the 6th power to 40 times 10 to the 6th power for the flight models. The Mach numbers covered include 1.5 to 2.4 in the wind tunnels and 0.85 to 2.5 in flight.

Study of Motion of Model of Personal-Owner or Liaison Airplane Through the Stall and Into the Incipient Spin by Means of a Free-Flight Testing Technique (open access)

Study of Motion of Model of Personal-Owner or Liaison Airplane Through the Stall and Into the Incipient Spin by Means of a Free-Flight Testing Technique

"A study of the motion of a personal-owner or liaison airplane through the stall and into the incipient spin has been made by catapulting a dynamic model into still air. The results showed that the model became unstalled in inverted flight after its initial rotation of substantially 180 degrees in roll. Since the rates of rotation were low, it may be inferred that termination of the incipient spin would be most readily obtained by proper control movements at this point" (p. 1).

The Effect of Blade-Section Camber on the Stall-Flutter Characteristics of Three NACA Propellers at Zero Advance (open access)

The Effect of Blade-Section Camber on the Stall-Flutter Characteristics of Three NACA Propellers at Zero Advance

Report presenting an investigation to determine the effect of blade-section camber on the stall-flutter characteristics of three propellers using a 6000-horsepower propeller dynamometer. Up to a certain blade angle, there was an increase in flutter-speed coefficient with an increase in blade-section design lift coefficient. An increase in thrust was found to lead to an increase in tip Mach number in the flutter region of the propeller blades.
