Diameter Measurements of Slugs Before and After Prolonged Heat Treatment (open access)

Diameter Measurements of Slugs Before and After Prolonged Heat Treatment

Abstract: "Diameter measurements of 25 slugs taken before and after a prolonged heat treatment showed no evidence of differences that would indicate blistering. The average effects of the treatment was different for the various slugs. Large differences in diameter measurements between slugs. Large differences in diameter between slugs and significant differences between indices and positions were found."

Heat Treatment and Machinability of Beryllium Rod (open access)

Heat Treatment and Machinability of Beryllium Rod

Purpose: "The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether or not the machinability of extruded beryllium rod could be improved by appropriate heat treatment. It was thought that this could be accomplished in the extruded Be rod by recrystallization without further growth of these grains. This should impart a certain degree of ductility to the metal. The investigations was divided into two parts: Part I - Heat Treatment of Beryllium Rod; Part II - Machinability of Beryllium Rod."

Correlation of Chemical Analyses on Graphite Bars and Test Pile Results

From abstract: "The chemical analyses of graphite test bars obtained from National Carbon Company and the analyses performed by the Hanford Works Laboratories Division do not correlate significantly with the test pile results, nor do the chemical analyses obtained from National Carbon Company agree with those done in the Handford Works Laboratories. Chemical results obtained at Hanford on samples taken lengthwise from individual bars correlated significantly with the individual test pile results."

A Microdetermination of Uranium by Ferric Sulfate Titration (open access)

A Microdetermination of Uranium by Ferric Sulfate Titration

Abstract: "Following nitrate removal by means of a three-stage hydrochloric acid digestion, uranium was reduced with chromous sulfate reagent. In an inert atmosphere, the quadrivalent uranium was titrated at 80-95[degrees] with standard ferric sulfate solution. The end point was obtained with a potentiometric cell including a platinum in-titrant reference electrode and a platinum indicator electrode. Application was made to various low leverl uranium solutions. For samples containing 1 - 12 milligrams or uranium, less than one percent error may be expected. Iron and chromium do not interfere."

Recovery of Uranium From Oil Distillation Residue (open access)

Recovery of Uranium From Oil Distillation Residue

Abstract: The complete development of an effective process for recovery of the uranium in the residues from distillation of used Kinney and diffusion pump oils or similar oils is described. After considerable study and experimentation with several methods, a successful procedure has been developed. The recommended procedure embodies solution of the residues in trichlorethylene followed by extraction with nitric acid. Recovery of uranium is better than 99 percent effective and the method may be applied directly to contaminated oils as well as to their distillation residues.

Separation of Tuballoy From Tantalum by Chlorination Distillation Process (open access)

Separation of Tuballoy From Tantalum by Chlorination Distillation Process

Abstract: Tuballoy can be effectively separated from tantalum filaments by chlorination of the filaments and subsequent distillation and condensation of tantalum chloride. Apparatus for chlorination of filaments and distillation separation in one unit is under consideration. Chemical methods of separation of tuballoy from distillation residues are being tested.

The Fission Neutron Spectrum of 25 (open access)

The Fission Neutron Spectrum of 25

Abstract: "Photographic plates have been used to measure the energy of neutrons from the fission of 25. The spectrum as inferred from the ranges of 850 protons recoiling in the forward direction shows a very wide maximum at ~1.5 Mev with an exponentially decreasing high energy tail which extends beyond 7 Mev. The minimum energy neutrons recorded were ~700 kv. If the spectrum is extrapolated to zero, one finds that this average neutron energy is about 1.85 Mev. The stopping power of the plates was calibrated by the use of monochromatic neutrons from the Li-7(pn) Be-7 reaction and the d-d reaction."

Optimum Conditions for the "Hot Zone" Volatilization of TCl₄

Abstract: "The data reported herein furnish a qualitative comparison of the rapidity of vaporization of TCl4 at various "hot zone" temperatures as well as a measure of the chlorine evolution attributed to its thermal decomposition. The presence of impurities in the TCl4 detracts from the significance of the reported chlorine evolution. The temperature recommended for rapid volatilization is 750 C at which TCl4 underwent thermal decomposition amounting to no more than 0.2% by weight."

A Rapid Method for Determination of Water in TO₃ (open access)

A Rapid Method for Determination of Water in TO₃

Summary: A set of conditions is described for a ten minute determination of water in TO₃ by ignition and absorption of the evolved water in magnesium perchlorate. Complete conversion to T₃O₃ is obtained under these conditions, so that total loss on ignition and total T (plus non-volatile impurity) content may also be obtained. It has been found unnecessary to employ Cu foil to prevent interference by nitrates, which may be present with a nitrate/water ratio as high as 5, and in an amount that does not exceed 100 mg.
