Drag characteristics of rectangular and swept-back NACA 65-009 airfoils having aspect ratios of 1.5 and 2.7 as determined by flight tests at supersonic speeds (open access)

Drag characteristics of rectangular and swept-back NACA 65-009 airfoils having aspect ratios of 1.5 and 2.7 as determined by flight tests at supersonic speeds

Report presenting tests to determine the effects of sweepback angle and aspect ratio on the drag of an NACA 65-009 airfoil at supersonic speeds. The results indicated that for the range of Mach numbers investigated, increasing the sweepback angle and decreasing the aspect ratio reduced the value of the wing drag coefficient.

Degradation of Isotopic Lactate and Acetate (open access)

Degradation of Isotopic Lactate and Acetate

A scheme of glucose degradation has been validated by the use of intermediates of known isotopic composition. In this scheme: glucose {yields} lactic acid {yields} CO{sub 2} (C-3,4) + acetic acid {yields} CO{sub 2} (C-2,5) + acetone {yields} iodoform (C-1,6) + acetate (C-1,6; 2,5), it was found that (a) in the oxidation of lactic acid, approximately 4.7% of the acetic acid was oxidized to CO{sub 2}; and (b) under the conditions prescribed, BaCO{sub 3} from the degradation of Ba acetate contained approximately 1.5% of the activity of the methyl group.

Recovery of Uranium From Oil Distillation Residue (open access)

Recovery of Uranium From Oil Distillation Residue

Abstract: The complete development of an effective process for recovery of the uranium in the residues from distillation of used Kinney and diffusion pump oils or similar oils is described. After considerable study and experimentation with several methods, a successful procedure has been developed. The recommended procedure embodies solution of the residues in trichlorethylene followed by extraction with nitric acid. Recovery of uranium is better than 99 percent effective and the method may be applied directly to contaminated oils as well as to their distillation residues.
