Examination of failed drill bit from geysers field (open access)

Examination of failed drill bit from geysers field

A Reed Tool Compsny 73JA drill bit used in the Geysers geothermal field failed primarily because of severe frictional wear of the nose bearing. There is no indication that well temperature by itself caused failure of any part of the bit. However, the high well temperature together with the friction heat generated produced a temperature which lead to softening and premature wear failure of the nose bearing.

Double-wall steam-generator tube and weld-development study. [LMFBR] (open access)

Double-wall steam-generator tube and weld-development study. [LMFBR]

The objective of this effort was to evaluate and initiate development on double-wall tubing and tube/tubesheet welds of various configurations for application in LMFBR steam generators. The scope of this effort was limited to one material (2 1/4 Cr-1Mo), two T/TS weld types (IBW and Orbital) and relatively small tube dimensions (approx. CRBR reference steam generator). It was recognized that larger tubes are, in general, easier to weld and that other combinations of tube materials (Incoloy 800, Inconel 600, 9Cr-1Mo) are feasible; however, metallurgical properties for these materials are being determined in the Advanced Alloy program and are beyond the scope of this effort. The double-wall tubing types evaluated for this study were also limited to tubes with water/steam on the tube side and sodium on the shell.

A study of the compliance of the Gaseous Effluent Sampling and Monitoring System with interim criteria: 296-B-10 stack, Waste Encapsulation and Storage Facility

A study is underway by Battelle-Northwest to evaluate existing gaseous effluent sampling systems in ARHCO process buildings, including the 225-B Waste Encapsulation and Storage Facility (WESF). An interim report concerning the WESF effluent sampling systems was issued in March of 1975. The objective of this report is to evaluate the compliance of the WESF exhaust stack air sampler and monitor with the interim criteria established by ARHCO, and to recommend corrective actions. This evaluation is based on the previous analysis of the sample collection device contained in BNWL-B-408 and recently gathered information on the sample monitoring instrumentation and sample collection device.

Some issues regarding regulatory policy, political participation, and social implications of geothermal resource development in the Imperial Valley (open access)

Some issues regarding regulatory policy, political participation, and social implications of geothermal resource development in the Imperial Valley

The early stages of geothermal resource development in the Imperial Valley have been characterized by an emphasis on the technological expertise of private developers and government officials. Government officials have created a complex array of Federal, state and county regulations to monitor the development. Local control is under the jurisdiction of the Imperial County government. The County has as its responsibility the protection of the general welfare of its residents, including any potentially adverse social, economic, or environmental impacts caused by geothermal resource development. Private developers and government officials are interested in the resources as a source of water desalination and electric power generation. An assessment of the interests and concerns of the public was made early in the development stage. In view of all these interests, it is essential in a democratic society that the various interests be identified so government can be representative of, and responsive to, those interests. Therefore, the four issues discussed in the paper are: (1) regulatory problems faced by local government officials in determining the course of development; (2) the social and political context in which the development is taking place; (3) the potential of geothermal development as perceived by community leaders and local …

Process heat in petroleum refinery applications. Final report. [HTGR] (open access)

Process heat in petroleum refinery applications. Final report. [HTGR]

The results of a study to evaluate the use of the General Atomic high-temperature gas-cooled reactor as a heat source for petroleum refining and other petrochemical processes requiring process temperatures up to 1050/sup 0/F are presented. The specific objective was to investigate methods of supplying and transporting steam and process heat from the primary reactor coolant to the refinery process heat exchangers. An evaluation of potential heat transfer fluids for transporting the heat from the reactor site to the refinery site was made and a promising fluid was selected for further investigation. A conceptual design of a secondary helium heat transfer loop with a heat exchanger located inside the prestressed concrete reactor vessel was established. Methods for providing minimum acceptable process heat and steam during reactor refueling and shutdown were investigated. A safety evaluation considering the possibility and consequences of radioactive contamination and petroleum contamination of the heat transfer fluid was conducted. The necessary modifications to the nuclear reactor system were identified and conceptual designs and economic estimates for these modifications were made.

Relativistic diodes in crossed magnetic fields. Progress report, June 1, 1975--February 15, 1976 (open access)

Relativistic diodes in crossed magnetic fields. Progress report, June 1, 1975--February 15, 1976

The behavior of a cylindrical field emission diode (radial potential approximately 200 kV) was studied in the presence of an externally applied axial magnetic field B less than or equal to 16 kG. Observations made of the space charge-limited electron current (approximately 50 kA) compare favorably with theory which takes into account the presence of both the external axial magnetic field and the azimuthal self-magnetic field generated by current flow in the cathode. At magnetic fields exceeding the critical field necessary for cutoff, small but not insignificant current flows persist. The associated microwave emission suggests that this residual current is being driven by an as-yet-unidentified high-frequency instability. Time-resolved measurements of the diode current and voltage lead to a determination of the expansion velocity of the cathode and anode plasmas. It was found that an external magnetic field of approximately 5 kG suffices to stop plasma motion. This value is in agreement with magnetohydrodynamic computations for a hydrogen plasma having an initial temperature of a few eV. Spectroscopic measurements of the diode plasma have shown that hydrogen is indeed the dominant ion species. Stark broadening of the spectral lines yields their number density.
