The Strontium-Strontium Hydride Phase System (open access)

The Strontium-Strontium Hydride Phase System

Technical report. From Abstract : "The Sr-SrH2 phase diagram was studied by thermal analysis, chemical analysis of equilibrated phases and X-ray diffraction. The maximum solubility of SrH2 in strontium metal is 38 mole % at the peritectic temperature of 880°C. Strontium metal undergoes an allotropic transformation at 555°C and melts at 768°C. A second transformation was found, at about 240°C, in samples containing hydrogen. Strontium hydride was found to have an allotropic transformation at 855°C."

High Pressure Research at Low Temperatures (open access)

High Pressure Research at Low Temperatures

Two principle reasons exist for the extension of high pressure research to temperatures near absolute zero. First, the comparison of certain data with theory (such as the pressure-volume relationship) is more meaningful if the effects of thermal vibrations can be ignored. Second, there are phenomena which can be studied only at low temperatures. These include superconductivity, the properties of solid helium and other inert gases, some electronic phenomena, etc.

An Experimental Approach to a Simplified Band Structure of the Rare Earth Metals (open access)

An Experimental Approach to a Simplified Band Structure of the Rare Earth Metals

Technical report. From Abstract : "A number of the physical properties from which we can obtain both direct and indirect information concerning the band structures of metals, have been measured for most of the rare earth metals. It was thought that it would be desirable to review ans examine these data and try to tie them together. For this purpose the very low and room temperature heat capacities, Hall coefficients, magnetic susceptibilities, spectral data and electrical resistivities were examined."

The Y-Nd and Sc-Nd Phase Systems (open access)

The Y-Nd and Sc-Nd Phase Systems

Technical report. From Introduction : "In a recent study by Spedding, et al. on some rare earth alloy systems, an intermediate phase was found to form when a light rare earth (ABAC stacking) was alloyed with a heavy rare earth (ABAC stacking). This intermediate phase was found to have the structure of samarium metal with the stacking ABABCBCAC and was designated "delta". Since the cause of this rather unusual structure occurring in either samarium metal or these alloys is not known the study of these phases as some of their properties is continuing in the Ames Laboratory. It was the purpose of the present study to extend our knowledge of the composition and more of formation of these phases."

Analysis of Carbon Monoxide-Nitrogen Mixtures by High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (open access)

Analysis of Carbon Monoxide-Nitrogen Mixtures by High Resolution Mass Spectrometry

From abstract: "A single focusing mass spectrometer has been converted into a double focusing instrument. Relatively high resolution is obtained by decreasing the slit widths and minimizing the ion-optic aberrations. A relatively low ion accelerating voltage (2000 volts) is utilized compared to those normally used for high resolution work. The entire construction was performed at these laboratories. Essentially all of the original equipment was reused in the double focusing system. Although the original source slit was decreased from 10 to 0.4 mils and the source α value was decreased from 0.04 to 0.008 radians, sufficient sensitivity is obtained for quantitative gas analysis with the ordinary electrometer tube amplifiers utilizing 4 x 10[^]10 ohms input grid resistors and 100 per cent inverse feedback. Carbon monoxide-nitrogen mixtures were analyzed quantitatively. The results indicate that direct quantitative analysis can be obtained on mixtures ranging from 99 per cent to 10 per cent carbon monoxide in nitrogen. Analysis of lower percentages may be made possible through indirect reading of the peak should it be necessary. It appears that the instrument should be adaptable to research problems concerning these two gases. The immediate problem posed is the analysis of oxygen and nitrogen in metals. Other …

Gamma Ray Efficiencies for Well Type Scintillation Crystals (open access)

Gamma Ray Efficiencies for Well Type Scintillation Crystals

From Abstract : "Gamma ray efficiencies for various sized well type NaI(Ti) crystals have been calculated using an IBM 704 digital computer. The adjustable parameters in the program are the gamma ray energy, the heights and diameters of the crystal and the well, the thickness of the well lining, and the positions of the (point) source inside the well. Some typical results are presented in graphical form."
