Surface Remediation in the Aleutian Islands: A Case Study of Amchitka Island, Alaska

Amchitka Island, Alaska, was at one time an integral player in the nation's defense program. Located in the North Pacific Ocean in the Aleutian Island archipelago, the island was intermittently inhabited by several key government agencies, including the U.S. Army, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (predecessor agency to the U.S. Department of Energy), and the U.S. Navy. Since 1993, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has conducted extensive investigations on Amchitka to determine the nature and extent of contamination resulting from historic nuclear testing. The uninhabited island was the site of three high-yield nuclear tests from 1965 to 1971. These test locations are now part of the DOE's National Nuclear Security Administration Nevada Operations Office's Environmental Management Program. In the summer of 2001, the DOE launched a large-scale remediation effort on Amchitka to perform agreed-upon corrective actions to the surface of the island. Due to the lack of resources available on Amchitka and logistical difficulties with conducting work at such a remote location, the DOE partnered with the Navy and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to share certain specified costs and resources. Attempting to negotiate the partnerships while organizing and implementing the surface remediation on Amchitka proved to be …

Radiometric Examination of Rock Specimens from Mount McKinley, Alaska (open access)

Radiometric Examination of Rock Specimens from Mount McKinley, Alaska

Abstract: A suite of 50 rock specimens, collected by the 1947 Washburn Mount McKinley Expedition, was scanned radiometrically. The maximum radioactivity observed in any one of the specimens was about twice background. Radiometric analyses of the most radioactive samples show that a sample of vein quartz coated with manganese oxide contains 0.009 percent equivalent uranium and that the maximum equivalent uranium content of granitic rock types is .004 percent. The radioactivity of the manganese-stained quartz is probably due to traces of uranium in the manganese mineral, whereas that of the granitic rocks is due to radioactive accessory minerals.

Preliminary Index to Geological Survey Trace Elements Reports on Alaska for the Period January 1945-December 1952

From introduction: Since 1945 the Alaskan Trace Elements Unit of the U. S. Geological. Survey has been engaged in reconnaissance for radioactive deposits in Alaska, first on behalf of the Manhattan Engineer District, later on behalf of the Atomic Energy Commission. During the period January 1945 through December 1952, 42 reports in the Survey's Trace Elements Investigations series and 18 reports in the Trace Elements Memorandum series, a totaJ of 60 reports, have been completed or are in preparation Of these 60 reports 44 have been completed and transmitted to the Commission as of December 31, 1952.

Alaskan Water and Sanitation Retrospective 1970-2005 (open access)

Alaskan Water and Sanitation Retrospective 1970-2005

The purpose of this retrospective is to inform the water and sanitation industry and the general public about technologies deployed in rural Alaskan villages between ~1970 and 2005. We indicate, per interviewee input, why the majority failed on a technical level or failed to provide adequate water on an as-used basis to improve health outcomes. This retrospective will supplement prior, and often meager, documentation of unsuccessful approaches to water and sanitation in Alaska, as both a cautionary tale and as a benchmark against which progress can be made.

Investigation of Alaska's Uranium Potential (open access)

Investigation of Alaska's Uranium Potential

From addendum: Two types of analyses for uranium in the stream-sediment samples are presented. One split of the stream-sediment samples was sent to Resource Associates of Alaska's laboratory, where they were analyzed for U by the fluormetric method after acid extraction. This is the method employed for U by most laboratories. The completeness of uranium extraction unavoidably varies with the particular type of uranium-bearing minerals present and possibly with the amount of iron, manganese, and carbonaceous material present, which can interfere with the extraction. Analyses by the method are shown in the text and appendix columns with the designation "RAA."
