3D Surface Mapping of Capsule Fill-Tube Assemblies used in Laser-Driven Fusion Targets (open access)

3D Surface Mapping of Capsule Fill-Tube Assemblies used in Laser-Driven Fusion Targets

This paper presents the development of a 3D surface mapping system used to measure the surface of a fusion target Capsule Fill-Tube Assembly (CFTA). The CFTA consists of a hollow Ge-doped plastic sphere, called a capsule, ranging in outer diameter between 2.2 mm and 2.6 mm and an attached 150 {micro}m diameter glass-core fill-tube that tapers down to a 10{micro} diameter at the capsule. The mapping system is an enabling technology to facilitate a quality assurance program and to archive 3D surface information of each capsule used in fusion ignition experiments that are currently being performed at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). The 3D Surface Mapping System is designed to locate and quantify surface features with a height of 50 nm and 300 nm in width or larger. Additionally, the system will be calibrated such that the 3D measured surface can be related to the capsule surface angular coordinate system to within 0.25 degree (1{sigma}), which corresponds to approximately 5 {micro}m linear error on the capsule surface.

Accelerated Carbonate Dissolution as a CO2 Separation and Sequestration Strategy (open access)

Accelerated Carbonate Dissolution as a CO2 Separation and Sequestration Strategy

We have proposed a technique that could reduce CO{sub 2} emissions from near coastal fossil-fuel power plants using existing power plant cooling water flow rates (Rau and Caldeira, 1999; Caldeira and Rau, 2000). Preliminary cost estimates are as low as $68 per tonne C sequestered, as compared to > $170 per tonne C estimated for other approaches to CO{sub 2} separation with geologic or deep-ocean storage. Engineers at McDermott Technologies, Inc., have independently estimated the cost of our proposed technique, and came to the conclusion that our cost estimates were at the high end of the likely range. Interest has been expressed in pursuing this approach further both in Norway and in Japan. We have proved the viability of our concept using (1) bench-top laboratory experiments (Figures 1 and 2), (2) computer modeling of those experiments, (3) more sophisticated cost estimates, and (4) three-dimensional computer modeling of the consequences to global ocean chemistry (Figure 3 and 4). The climate and environmental impacts of our current, carbon intensive energy usage demands that effective and practical energy alternatives and CO{sub 2} mitigation strategies be found. As part of this effort, various means of capturing and storing CO{sub 2} generated from fossil-fuel-based energy …

Accelerating the Reduction of Excess Russian Highly Enriched Uranium (open access)

Accelerating the Reduction of Excess Russian Highly Enriched Uranium

This paper presents the latest information on one of the Accelerated Highly Enriched Uranium (HEU) Disposition initiatives that resulted from the May 2002 Summit meeting between Presidents George W. Bush and Vladimir V. Putin. These initiatives are meant to strengthen nuclear nonproliferation objectives by accelerating the disposition of nuclear weapons-useable materials. The HEU Transparency Implementation Program (TIP), within the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) is working to implement one of the selected initiatives that would purchase excess Russian HEU (93% 235U) for use as fuel in U.S. research reactors over the next ten years. This will parallel efforts to convert the reactors' fuel core from HEU to low enriched uranium (LEU) material, where feasible. The paper will examine important aspects associated with the U.S. research reactor HEU purchase. In particular: (1) the establishment of specifications for the Russian HEU, and (2) transportation safeguard considerations for moving the HEU from the Mayak Production Facility in Ozersk, Russia, to the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, TN.

Actinic defect counting statistics over 1 cm2 area of EUVL mask blank (open access)

Actinic defect counting statistics over 1 cm2 area of EUVL mask blank

As a continuation of comparison experiments between EUV inspection and visible inspection of defects on EUVL mask blanks, we report on the result of an experiment where the EUV defect inspection tool is used to perform at-wavelength defect counting over 1 cm{sup 2} of EUVL mask blank. Initial EUV inspection found five defects over the scanned area and the subsequent optical scattering inspection was able to detect all of the five defects. Therefore, if there are any defects that are only detectable by EUV inspection, the density is lower than the order of unity per cm2. An upgrade path to substantially increase the overall throughput of the EUV inspection system is also identified in the manuscript.

Aging and Gene Expression in the Primate Brain (open access)

Aging and Gene Expression in the Primate Brain

It is well established that gene expression levels in many organisms change during the aging process, and the advent of DNA microarrays has allowed genome-wide patterns of transcriptional changes associated with aging to be studied in both model organisms and various human tissues. Understanding the effects of aging on gene expression in the human brain is of particular interest, because of its relation to both normal and pathological neurodegeneration. Here we show that human cerebral cortex, human cerebellum, and chimpanzee cortex each undergo different patterns of age-related gene expression alterations. In humans, many more genes undergo consistent expression changes in the cortex than in the cerebellum; in chimpanzees, many genes change expression with age in cortex, but the pattern of changes in expression bears almost no resemblance to that of human cortex. These results demonstrate the diversity of aging patterns present within the human brain, as well as how rapidly genome-wide patterns of aging can evolve between species; they may also have implications for the oxidative free radical theory of aging, and help to improve our understanding of human neurodegenerative diseases.

ALUMINA-CLAD UO$sub 2$ FOR FUEL APPLICATIONS (open access)

ALUMINA-CLAD UO$sub 2$ FOR FUEL APPLICATIONS

Using a special reactive form of high-purity alumina, claddings were applied to UO/sub 2/ particles by a tumbling technique. The clad pellets were isostatically pressed at 100,000 psi and then sintered at 2800 deg F in hydrogen. crack-free spheroidal pellets ranging from 1000 to 2000 mu in diameter were produced. The dense Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ envelopes surrounding the UO/sub 2/ particles were estimated to be 300 to 500 mu thick. The Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ claddings protected the UO/sub 2/ from oxidation when the pellets were heated in air for 100 hr at 1200 or 1800 deg . There was no measurable release of fission products from irradiated clad particles heat treated at 1700 deg F in vacuum for 7 days after exposure to 6.0 x 10/sup 12/ nv for 1 hr at room temperature. Claddings of other oxides, such as Beo or MgO, probably could be applied by the same techniques used in applying the Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ claddings. (auth)

Analysis of AGS polarimeter data at G{gamma}=7.5.

Data were collected with the AGS internal polarimeter at G{gamma} = 7.5 during the recent FY02 polarized proton run. The addition of new forward scintillation counters permitted an absolute calibration of the polarimeter for both nylon and carbon targets. The results are summarized, and the polarization measured at G{gamma} = 7.5 is compared to that at 200 MeV.
