"The trajectories of waterdrops in air flowing over airfoils are determined for three airfoil - angle-of-attack combinations using the differential analyzer to solve the differential equations of motion of the waterdrops. From these trajectories the rate of water impingement, the area of impingement, and the distribution of impingement are determined as functions of two dimensionless moduli. Report presenting testing of three rocket-powered models with Douglas D-558-2 wings as horizontal fins with scaled structural parameters to determine whether the possibility of wing flutter due to torsion and bending exists in full-scale airplanes at transonic speeds. No wing flutter was present in the models tested, but pitching oscillation developed as it passed into the transonic range.

An investigation of the effects of heat transfer on boundary-layer transition on a parabolic body of revolution (NACA RM-10) at a Mach number of 1.61

Report presents the results of an investigation conducted to determine the effects of heat transfer on boundary-layer transition on a parabolic body of revolution (NACA rm-10 without fins) at Mach number of 1.61 and over a Reynolds number range from 2.5 x 10(6) to 35 x 10(6). The maximum cooling of the model used in these tests corresponded to a temperature ratio (ratio of model-surface temperature to free-stream temperature) of 1.12, a value somewhat higher than the theoretical value required for infinite boundary-layer stability at this Mach number. The maximum heating corresponded to a temperature ratio of about 1.85. Included in the investigation was a study of the effects of surface irregularities and disturbances generated in the airstream on the ability of heat transfer to influence boundary-layer transition.

From Summary: "The effects of deflecting full-span, constant-chord, leading-edge flaps, having either round or sharp leading edges, upon the lift, drag, and pitching moment characteristics of a model of an interceptor-type aircraft have been determined experimentally at subsonic and supersonic speeds. Results indicate that the variations of lift with angle of attack and of pitching moment with lift were unaffected by either the shape of the flap leading edge or flap deflection. Deflection of the flaps having either a round or sharp leading edge increased the drag at zero lift at both subsonic and supersonic speeds. In spite of the increase in the drag at zero lift, however, deflection of the flaps increased the maximum lift-drag ratio at subsonic speeds and had no deleterious effect at supersonic speeds."

A Microdetermination of Uranium by Ferric Sulfate Titration

Abstract: "Following nitrate removal by means of a three-stage hydrochloric acid digestion, uranium was reduced with chromous sulfate reagent. In an inert atmosphere, the quadrivalent uranium was titrated at 80-95[degrees] with standard ferric sulfate solution. The end point was obtained with a potentiometric cell including a platinum in-titrant reference electrode and a platinum indicator electrode. Application was made to various low leverl uranium solutions. For samples containing 1 - 12 milligrams or uranium, less than one percent error may be expected. Iron and chromium do not interfere."

The Valve Actuated Pulse Column Design

Abstract: "The valve-actuated pulse column is employed to give phase separation on each half cycle in the countercurrent flow cycle and provides independent control over each step in the cycle. The dependence on temperature of operation, on pulse frequency and amplitude, and on plate design and spacing has been studied for extraction and stripping of uranium with tributyl phosphate in a hydrocarbon diluent. It is found that the efficiency increases quite significantly as the temperature is raised regardless of the direction of transfer and this increased efficiency is accompanied by greater operational freedom. A decrease in hole size, decrease in plate separation and increase in frequency all lead to higher efficiency in agreement with the concept that small drops continually formed coalesced and reformed, lead to maximum interphase transfer. The high extraction efficiency of the column is probably aided further by the relatively sharp pulse produced."

A Rapid Method for Determination of Water in TO₃

Summary: A set of conditions is described for a ten minute determination of water in TO₃ by ignition and absorption of the evolved water in magnesium perchlorate. Complete conversion to T₃O₃ is obtained under these conditions, so that total loss on ignition and total T (plus non-volatile impurity) content may also be obtained. It has been found unnecessary to employ Cu foil to prevent interference by nitrates, which may be present with a nitrate/water ratio as high as 5, and in an amount that does not exceed 100 mg.

The o-aminophenol, 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid (3-OHAA) is a metabolite of tryptophan normally present in urine in trace quantities. C14-3-OHAA was given to normal mice and mice with either mammary adenocarcinoma, glioblastoma multiforme or ascites tumor to study the influence of these transplantable tumors on metabolism of 3-OHAA.

Complexing Agents for the Solvent Extraction of Uranium from Thorium. I. The Use of Thiocyanate in the Extraction of Uranium. II. The Use of Antipyrine in Solvent Extraction

Abstract. In the first section of this technical report a new method of extracting uranium from thorium nitrate solution is discussed. This method consists of extracting an aqueous solution of thorium nitrate, nitric acid, sodium sulphate, and potassium thiocyanate with hexone. By this procedure, using an equal volume of hexone it is possible to extract 83 percent of the uranium while only 0.3 percent of the thorium is extracted. other experiments show that even greater separations are possible. In the second section of this report the use of antipyrine in solvent extraction procedures is discussed. Experiments are described in which 90 percent of the uranium is extracted while the thorium is extracted to the order of 3 to 5 percent.
