The Fission Neutron Spectrum of 25

Abstract: "Photographic plates have been used to measure the energy of neutrons from the fission of 25. The spectrum as inferred from the ranges of 850 protons recoiling in the forward direction shows a very wide maximum at ~1.5 Mev with an exponentially decreasing high energy tail which extends beyond 7 Mev. The minimum energy neutrons recorded were ~700 kv. If the spectrum is extrapolated to zero, one finds that this average neutron energy is about 1.85 Mev. The stopping power of the plates was calibrated by the use of monochromatic neutrons from the Li-7(pn) Be-7 reaction and the d-d reaction."

The multiplication constant and optimal concentration of a slurry pile is recalculated on the basis of Mitchell's recent experiments on resonance absorption. The smallest chain reacting unit contains 45 to 55 m3 of D2O.

A production test composed of preformed zirconium samples was prepared by R. S. Kemper of the Physical Metallurgy Unit⁽¹⁾ to determine the effect of exposure time and the influence of prior mechanical cold work on changes occuring [sic.] during irradiation. The first section was delivered to Radiometallurgy Unit is April, 1954, for examination after an exposure of 190 MWD/AT.

The Nuclear Safety of Fissile Materials

Whenever fissile materials are handled in significant quantities such as in fuel element fabrication, separation processes, or in exponential and/or critical experiments a potential criticality hazard exists. The usual procedure which is followed by those persons conducting critical mass experiments is to either place the potential reactor in a heavily shielded cell or to conduct the experiments remotely in which case distance provides a measure of safety in the event of an unscheduled radiation outburst. In considering potential critically incidents, especially for the personnel not specifically engaged in critical mass studies, it is very likely that at the time of the incident neither the conditions of shielding nor distance will prevail for the personnel involved.

Control System for HRT Cooling Water

The circuits described herein and shown functionally in Fig. 1 are to be added to the HRT control circuit to provide control and protection for the revised HRT cooling water system. The circuitry will provide protection against excess pressure in the demineralized cooling water loop and cooling water activity, will initiate action to insure containment of activity in event of an explosion and will provide emergency cooling water from the tower basin when required.

A Brief Review of thermal Gradient Mass Transfer in Sodium and NaK Systems

The fact that material transport does occur under conditions of finite temperature difference in a flowing molten metal system was established. The rate mass transfer was thought to be either diffusion limited or solution rate limited. It is believed that the mass transfer of structural materials in Na or NaK systems is solution rate limited. The limiting process has not been qualitatively or quantitatively confirmed for the Inconel-Na or Inconel-NaK system. Increasing the maximum system wall temperature increases the amount of mass transfer, at least above 1300 deg F. The effect of the total temperature difference across the system on the amount of mass transfer was determined.
