First Results From the Soviet-American Gallium Experiment

The Soviet-American Gallium Experiment is the first experiment able to measure the dominant flux of low energy p-p solar neutrinos. Four extractions made during January to May 1990 from 30 tons of gallium have been counted and indicate that the flux is consistent with 0 SNU and is less than 72 SNU (68% CL) and less than 138 SNU (95% CL). This is to be compared with the flux of 132 SNU predicted by the Standard Solar Model. 10 refs., 4 figs., 1 tab.

The Soviet American Gallium Experiment (SAGE)

A radiochemical experiment using the reaction v/sub e/ = /sup 71/Ga + e/sup e/ to determine the integral flux of low-energy neutrinos from the sun is currently under preparation at the Baksan Neutrino Observatory in the USSR. Measurements are scheduled to commence by late 1988 using /approximately/30 tonnes of metallic gallium. With this amount of gallium it should be possible to obtain a fractional statistical accuracy of 12 to 15% after one year (assuming the standard solar model neutrino flux). While initial measurements are in progress, installation of the remaining 30 tonnes of gallium will proceed in order to perform the full 60 tonne experiment.

The Baksan Neutrino Observatory Soviet-American Gallium Solar Neutrino Experiment

A radiochemical /sup 71/Ga-/sup 71/Ge experiment to determine the integral flux of neutrinos from the sun is currently under preparation at the Baksan Neutrino Observatory in the USSR. Measurements are scheduled to commence by late 1988 with 30 tonnes of metallic gallium. A fractional statistical accuracy of 18% is expected to be obtained after one year of operation if the solar signal obtained after one year of operation if the solar signal is 70 SNU, the flux expected from p-p neutrinos alone. While initial measurements are in progress, 30 additional tonnes of gallium will be installed in order to perform the full experiment with a 60-tonne target. 28 refs.

Results From the Soviet-American Gallium Experiment

A radiochemical {sup 71}Ga-{sup 71}Ge experiment to determine the primary flux of neutrinos from the Sun has begun operation at the Baksan Neutrino Observatory. The number of {sup 71}Ge atoms extracted from thirty tons of gallium was measured in five runs during the period of January to July 1990. Assuming that the extraction efficiency for {sup 71}Ge atoms produced by solar neutrinos is the same as from natural Ge carrier, we observed the capture rate to be 20 + 15/{minus}20 (stat) {plus minus} 32 (syst) SNU, resulting in a limit of less than 79 SNU (90% CL). This is to be compared with 132 SNU predicted by the Standard Solar Model.

Measurement of the charge asymmetry in semileptonic Bs decays

The authors have performed the first direct measurement of the time integrated flavor untagged charge asymmetry in semileptonic B{sub s}{sup 0} decays, A{sub SL}{sup a,unt}, by comparing the decay rate of B{sub s}{sup 0} {yields} {mu}{sup +} D{sub s}{sup -}{nu}X, where D{sub s}{sup -} {yields} {phi}{pi}{sup -} and {phi} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}, with the charge-conjugate {bar B}{sub s}{sup 0} decay rate. This sample was selected from 1.3 fb{sup -1} of data collected by the D0 experiment in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron collider. They obtain A{sub SL}{sup a,unt} = [1.23 {+-} 0.97(stat) {+-} 0.17(syst)] x 10{sup -2}. Assuming that {Delta}m{sub s}/{bar {Lambda}}{sub s} >> 1 and {Delta}{Lambda}{sub a}/(2{bar {Lambda}}{sub s}) < 1, this result can be translated into a measurement on the CP-violating phase in B{sub s}{sup 0} mixing: {Delta}{Lambda}{sub s}/{Delta}m{sub s} {center_dot} tan {phi}{sub s} = [2.45 {+-} 1.93(stat) {+-} 0.35(syst)] x 10{sup -2}.

Measurement of the t anti-t production cross section and top quark mass extraction using dilepton events in p anti-p collisions

We present a measurement of the top quark pair production cross section in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV using approximately 1 fb{sup -1} of data collected with the D0 detector. We consider decay channels containing two high p{sub T} charged leptons where one lepton is identified as an electron or a muon while the other lepton can be an electron, a muon or a hadronically decaying {tau} lepton. For a mass of the top quark of 170 GeV, the measured cross section is 7.5{sub -1.0}{sup +1.0}(stat){sub -0.06}{sup +0.7}(syst){sub -0.5}{sup 0.6}(lumi) pb. Using {ell}{sub {tau}} events only, they measure: {sigma}{sub t{bar t}} x B(t{bar t} {yields} {ell}{sub {tau}}b{bar b}) = 0.13{sub -0.08}{sup +0.09}(stat){sub -0.06}{sup 0.06}(syst)+{sub -0.02}{sup +0.02}(lumi) pb. Comparing the measured cross section as a function of the mass of the top quark with a partial next-to-next-to leading order Quantum Chromodynamics theoretical prediction, we extract a mass of the top quark of 171.5{sub -8.8}{sup +9.9} GeV, in agreement with direct measurements.

Search for admixture of scalar top quarks in the t anti-t lepton+jets final state at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV

A search for pair production of the lightest supersymmetric partner of the top quark, {tilde t}{sub 1}, is performed in the lepton+jets channel using 0.9 fb{sup -1} of data collected by the D0 experiment. Kinematic differences between {tilde t}{sub 1}{bar {tilde t}}{sub 1} and the dominant top quark pair production background are used to separate the two processes. First limits from Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider for the scalar top quark decaying to a chargino and a b quark ({tilde t}{sub 1} {yields} {tilde {chi}}{sub 1}{sup +} b) are obtained for scalar top quark masses of 130-190 GeV and chargino masses of 90-150 GeV.

Search for associated production of charginos and neutralinos in the trilepton final state using 2.3 fb**-1 of data

We report the results of a search for associated production of charginos and neutralinos using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 fb{sup -1} collected with the D0 experiment during Run II of the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider. Final states containing three charged leptons and missing transverse energy are probed for a signal from supersymmetry with four dedicated trilepton event selections. No evidence for a signal is observed, and we set limits on the product of production cross section and leptonic branching fraction. Within minimal supergravity, these limits translate into bounds on m{sub 0} and m{sub 1/2} that are well beyond existing limits.

Search for excited electrons in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV

We present the results of a search for the production of an excited state of the electron, e*, in proton-antiproton collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV. The data were collected with the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of approximately 1 fb{sup -1}. We search for e* in the process p{bar p} {yields} e*e, with the e* subsequently decaying to an electron plus photon. No excess above the standard model background is observed. Interpreting our data in the context of a model that describes e* production by four-fermion contact interactions and e* decay via electroweak processes, we set 95% C.L. upper limits on the production cross section ranging from 8:9 fb to 27 fb, depending on the mass of the excited electron. Choosing the scale for contact interactions to be {Lambda} = 1 TeV, excited electron masses below 756 GeV are excluded at the 95% C.L.

Search for pair production of second generation scalar leptoquarks in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV

The authors report on a search for the pair production of second generation scalar leptoquarks (LQ{sub 2}) in p{bar p} collisions at the center-of-mass energy {radical}s = 1.96 TeV, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 294 {+-} 19 pb{sup -1} recorded with the D0 detector. No evidence for a leptoquark signal in the LQ{sub 2} {ovr LQ}{sub 2} {yields} {mu}q{mu}q channel has been observed, and upper bounds on the product of cross section times branching fraction were set. This yields lower mass limits of m{sub LQ{sub 2}} > 247 GeV for {beta} = {Beta}(LQ{sub 2} {yields} {mu}q) = 1 and m{sub LQ{sub 2}} > 182 GeV for {beta} = 1/2. Combining these limits with previous D0 results, the lower limits on the mass of a second generation scalar leptoquark are m{sub LQ{sub 2}} > 251 GeV and m{sub LQ{sub 2}} > 204 GeV for {beta} = 1 and {beta} = 1/2, respectively.

The authors present the first simultaneous measurement of the ratio of branching fractions, R = {Beta}(t {yields} Wb)/{Beta}(t {yields} Wq), with q being a d, s, or b quark, and the top quark pair production cross section {sigma}{sub t{bar t}} in the lepton plus jets channel using 0.9 fb{sup -1} of p{bar p} collision data at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV collected with the D0 detector. they extract R and {sigma}{sub t{bar t}} by analyzing samples of events with 0, 1 and {ge} 2 identified b jets. They measure R = 0.97{sub -0.08}{sup +0.09} (stat+syst) and {sigma}{sub t{bar t}} = 8.18{sub -0.84}{sup +0.90}(stat+syst) {+-} 0.50 (lumi) pb, in agreement with the standard model prediction.

Search for Higgs boson production in dilepton and missing energy final states with 5.4 fb-1 of p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s) =1.96 TeV

A search for the standard model Higgs boson is presented using events with two charged leptons and large missing transverse energy selected from 5.4 fb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. No significant excess of events above background predictions is found, and observed (expected) upper limits at 95% confidence level on the rate of Higgs boson production are derived that are a factor of 1.55 (1.36) above the predicted standard model cross section at m{sub H} = 165 GeV.

Azimuthal decorrelations and multiple parton interactions in photon+2 jet and photon+3 jet events in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV

Samples of inclusive {gamma} + 2 jet and {gamma} + 3 jet events collected by the D0 experiment with an integrated luminosity of about 1 fb{sup -1} in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV are used to measure cross sections as a function of the angle in the plane transverse to the beam direction between the transverse momentum (p{sub T}) of the {gamma} + leading jet system (jets are ordered in p{sub T}) and p{sub T} of the other jet for {gamma} + 2 jet, or p{sub T} sum of the two other jets for {gamma} + 3 jet events. The results are compared to different models of multiple parton interactions (MPI) in the pythia and sherpa Monte Carlo (MC) generators. The data indicate a contribution from events with double parton (DP) interactions and are well described by predictions provided by the pythia MPI models with p{sub T}-ordered showers and by sherpa with the default MPI model. The {gamma} + 2 jet data are also used to determine the fraction of events with DP interactions as a function of the azimuthal angle and as a function of the second jet p{sub T}.

Measurement of the top quark mass in $p \bar{p}$ collisions using events with two leptons

We present a measurement of the top quark mass (m{sub t}) in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV using t{bar t} events with two leptons (ee, e{mu} or {mu}{mu}) in the final state in 4.3 fb{sup -1} of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We analyze the kinematically underconstrained dilepton events by integrating over the neutrino rapidity distributions. We reduce the dominant systematic uncertainties from jet energy calibration using a correction obtained from t{bar t} {yields} {ell} + jets events. We also correct jets in simulated events to replicate the quark flavor dependence of the jet response in data. In combination with our previous analysis, we measure m{sub t} = 174.0 {+-} 2.4(stat) {+-} 1.4(syst) GeV.

An Improved determination of the width of the top quark (open access)

An Improved determination of the width of the top quark

We present an improved determination of the total width of the top quark, {Lambda}{sub t}, using 5.4 fb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 Collaboration at the Tevatron p{bar p} Collider. The total width {Lambda}{sub t} is extracted from the partial decay width {Lambda}(t {yields} Wb) and the branching fraction {Beta}(t {yields} Wb). {Lambda}(t {yields} Wb) is obtained from the t-channel single top quark production cross section and {Beta}(t {yields} Wb) is measured in t{bar t} events. For a top mass of 172.5 GeV, the resulting width is {Lambda}{sub t} = 2.00{sub -0.43}{sup +0.47} GeV. This translates to a top-quark lifetime of {tau}{sub t} = (3.29{sub -0.63}{sup +0.90}) x 10{sup -25} s. We also extract an improved direct limit on the CKM matrix element 0.81 < |V{sub tb}| {le} 1 at 95% C.L. and a limit of |V{sub tb'}| < 0.59 for a high mass fourth generation bottom quark assuming unitarity of the fourth generation quark mixing matrix.

A measurement of the WZ and ZZ production cross sections using leptonic final states in 8.6 fb^{-1} of p\bar{p} collisions

We study the processes p{bar p} {yields} WZ {yields} {ell}{nu}{ell}{sup +}{ell}{sup -} and p{bar p} {yields} ZZ {yields} {ell}{sup +}{ell}{sup -}{nu}{bar {nu}}, where {ell} = e or {mu}. Using 8.6 fb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider, we measure the WZ production cross section to be 4.50{sub -0.66}{sup +0.63} pb which is consistent with, but slightly above a prediction of the standard model. The ZZ cross section is measured to be 1.64 {+-} 0.46 pb, in agreement with a prediction of the standard model. Combination with an earlier analysis of the ZZ {yields} {ell}{sup +}{ell}{sup -}{ell}{sup +}{ell}{sup -} channel yields a ZZ cross section of 1.44{sub -0.34}{sup +0.35} pb.

Search for W'->tb resonances with left- and right-handed couplings to fermions

We present a search for the production of a heavy gauge boson, W{prime}, that decays to third-generation quarks, by the D0 Collaboration in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV. We set 95% confidence level upper limits on the production cross section times branching fraction. For the first time, we set limits for arbitrary combinations of left- and right-handed couplings of the W{prime} boson to fermions. For couplings with the same strength as the standard model W boson, we set the following limits for M(W{prime}) > m({nu}{sub R}): M(W{prime}) > 863 GeV for purely left-handed couplings, M(W{prime}) > 885 GeV for purely right-handed couplings, and M(W{prime}) > 916 GeV if both left- and right-handed couplings are present. The limit for right-handed couplings improves for M(W{prime}) < m({nu}{sub R}) to M(W{prime}) > 890 GeV.

A Novel High-Heat Transfer Low-NO{sub x} Natural Gas Combustion System. Final Technical Report

A novel high-heat transfer low NO(sub x) natural gas combustion system. The objectives of this program are to research, develop, test, and commercialize a novel high-heat transfer low-NO{sub x} natural gas combustion system for oxygen-, oxygen-enriched air, and air-fired furnaces. This technology will improve the process efficiency (productivity and product quality) and the energy efficiency of high-temperature industrial furnaces by at least 20%. GTI's high-heat transfer burner has applications in high-temperature air, oxygen-enriched air, and oxygen furnaces used in the glass, metals, cement, and other industries. Development work in this program is focused on using this burner to improve the energy efficiency and productivity of glass melting furnaces that are major industrial energy consumers. The following specific project objectives are defined to provide a means of achieving the overall project objectives. (1) Identify topics to be covered, problems requiring attention, equipment to be used in the program, and test plans to be followed in Phase II and Phase III. (2) Use existing codes to develop models of gas combustion and soot nucleation and growth as well as a thermodynamic and parametric description of furnace heat transfer issues. Thermal Treatment of Wastes in an Advanced Cyclonic Combustor

IGT is developing an advanced waste combustion concept, based on cyclonic combustion principles, for application to a wide range of industrial wastes. In IGT's cyclonic combustor, a mixture of fuel and combustion air is fed tangentially at a relatively high velocity into a cylindrical chamber. The waste is injected either tangentially with the fuel or separately in a tangential, radial, or axial configuration. This approach provides high combustion intensity with internal recirculation of combustion products, which results in extremely stable and complete combustion, even at relatively low temperatures. IGT has performed three successful test programs involving cyclonic waste combustion for industrial clients. In one program, industrial wastewaters containing 40% to 50% organics and inorganics with heating values of 1600 to 3270 Btu/lb were combusted to 99.9% completion at only 2000{degrees}F. The low combustion temperature minimized the supplemental fuel required. In another program, simulated low-Btu industrial off-gases (55 to 65 BTu/SCF) were successfully combusted with stable combustion at 1900{degrees}F using air and waste preheat. Supplemental fuel was unnecessary because of the mixing that occurs in the cyclonic combustor. Development of Natural Gas Injection Technology for NO Sub X Reduction From Municipal Waste Combustors

Natural gas injection (NGI) technology for reducing NO{sub x} emissions from municipal waste combustors (MWCs) is being developed. The approach involves the injection of natural gas, together with recirculated flue gases (for mixing), above the grate to provide reducing combustion conditions that promote the destruction of NO{sub x} precursors, as well as NO{sub x}. Extensive development testing was subsequently carried out in a 2.5 {times} 10{sup 6} Btu/h (0.7 MWth) pilot-scale MWC firing actual MSW. Both tests, using simulated combustion products and actual MSW, showed that 50% to 70% NO{sub x} reduction could be achieved. These results were used to define the key operating parameters. A full-scale system has been designed and retrofitted to a 100-ton/day Riley/Takuma mass burn system at the Olmsted County Waste-to-Energy facility. The system was designed to provide variation in the key parameters to not only optimize the process for the Olmsted unit, but also to acquire design data for MWCs of other sizes and designs. Development of natural gas reburning for control of NO sub x from municipal waste combustors

The Gas Research Institute (GRI) and the Institute of Gas Technology (IGT), in cooperation with Riley Stoker Corporation (Riley), USA, and Takuma Company Ltd. (Takuma), Japan, have developed a gas reburn process for application to municipal waste combustors (MWCs). The reburn process is based on extensive full-scale MWC in-furnace characterization and furnace gas simulation experimental testing. The approach, based on the use of recirculated flue gas to inject and mix natural gas in the reburn zone and control the stoichiometry, was developed and tested in a pilot-scale MWC firing actual municipal waste at a rate of 5.5 metric tons/day. The furnace simulation and the pilot tests define the key process parameters and show that 50% to 70% NO{sub x} reduction can be achieved. A full-scale reburn system has been designed and retrofitted into a full-scale 100-ton/day commercial Riley/Takuma MWC. Field evaluation began in December 1990. This paper describes the results of the development studies and the plans for full-scale system testing. Although the results of full-scale testing are not available for inclusion in this transcript, they will be presented with conclusions at the conference. 2 refs., 10 figs., 5 tabs.
