Report of the Committee on Public Buildings and Grounds detailing the opinions and recommendations of the Committee on the proposed Senate bill 5123 to authorize the extension of the building building in Manchester, New Hampshire. It includes a report from the Secretary of the Treasury on the proposed legislation.

"The means of increasing the number of birds about our homes are few and simple. They comprise adequate protection and the provision of suitable nesting places, food, and water.... This bulletin [recommends] practicable methods of attracting birds about homes [in the northeastern United States]. Especial attention will be given to the value of fruit-bearing shrubs and trees." -- title page. Protection for birds, winter feeding, water supplies, and nesting boxes and birdhouses are also discussed.

"There are nearly 7,500 recognized species of ferns in the world, of which number over 200 are known to be native to the United States. A few species have become weed pests in this country, and it is to a discussion of the control of these weedy ferns that this bulletin is devoted. The parts of the United States in which ferns are bad weeds are, principally, (1) the hill country of the Northeastern States and the higher portions of the Appalachian Mountain region as far south as Georgia, and (2) the Pacific coast country west of the Cascade Mountains.... This publication deals only with fern eradication in the Eastern States." -- p. 1-2

This report discusses the roundheaded apple-tree borer, an insect in the eastern and midwestern United States that, in its larval stage, destroys the bark and wood of apple trees. Several methods of control are discussed, including worming, paints and washes, and sprays.Apple-tree borers.

"Conditions created by the European war have made sheep raising on a small scale a very profitable enterprise for the New England farmer so situated as to take advantage of the economic conditions. Prior to the recent remarkable advance in prices of wool and mutton, sheep raising in New England was comparatively unprofitable, but now, under certain conditions, a revival of the industry seems desirable. This bulletin tells briefly how the industry was organized in 1914, and discusses the difficulties to be met in expanding the business, with special reference to improvement in breeding stock, better care, and more efficient disease control." -- p. 2

Report discussing the distribution and cultivation of the leguminous crop alsike clover, which grows primarily in the northeastern United States. Topics discussed include soil requirements, seeding, uses, and insect enemies and diseases.

"Beekeeping methods suitable for the clover region are well developed but many beekeepers of this region are failing to obtain the full available honey crop because of deficiencies in their practice. A system of management is here given which will result in a full crop from these sources. The variation in the value of the clovers to the beekeeper is also discussed and the methods to be followed in bringing the clover region back to its former prominence in honey production are outlined." -- p. 2

Report discussing earthquake activity in the United States during 1940. The report is broken down by regions and has sections for specific earthquakes.

From abstract: Mica has been mined in New Hampshire since 1803. Production from 1908 through 1939 has aggregated 13,326,990 pounds of sheet and punch mica, an annual average of 416,470 pounds. Since 1931 production has been below this average, because of economic conditions rather than depletions. The mica-bearing pegmatites of the Grafton and Keene districts occur mostly in sillimanite-mica schist adjacent to large areas of biotite gneiss. The pegmatite bodies range from a fraction of an inch to more than 200 feet in thickness; most of them are crosscutting, and about 75 percent strike northeast. Mica occurs sporadically in most of them but where present in commercial quantities it is localized in one or more of the following zones: (1) In quartz-plagioclase-muscovite zones 2 to 10 feet from the walls of large pegmatite bodies, (2) in or near quartz masses that occur mostly near the centers of the bodies, (3) in thin dikes 5 to 15 feet thick or in similar offshoots from larger bodies, (4) within large pegmatite bodies, in more or less tabular streaks or zones composed principally of plagioclase, quartz, and muscovite.

Report issued by the Bureau of Mines over exploration of mineral deposits on Beryl Mountain. As stated in the introduction, "testing by surface cuts, trenching, and tunneling was conducted by the Bureau of Mines from August to December 1943" (p. 1). This report includes maps.

Report discussing a 1948 geological examination of 7,662 miles of roadside rocks in Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and southeastern New York to find deposits of radioactive materials.

From abstract: In 1948, 7,662 miles of roadside rocks and soils in Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and southeastern New York were traversed with a car-mounted Geiger-Mueller counter. The observed distribution of the abnormally radioactive rocks and soils is limited to certain areas, herein called "radioactive provinces," that are separated from each other by areas of essentially nonradioactive rock.

Report discussing a study on the radioactivity of red and green phase Conway granite from Redstone, New Hampshire. Information regarding the collection and measurement methods are included as well as experimental data and calculations.

From abstract: "Age determinations by the Larsen method are reported for the four Paleozoic plutonic series of New Hampshire."

This report describes a summary of information available on substation locations,elevations,exposures and many from date station established to 1955.

From Introduction: "The primary purpose of this work was to summarize and bring up to date the information on beryl resources as gained from investigations during 1942-45, to examine in detail certain beryl-bearing pegmatites discovered and developed in recent years, and to study other pegmatites and groups of pegmatites known or suspected to contain beryl."
